Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Anya Just Unleashed One of Most Powerful Big Bads Ever

Anya's machinations in Buffy the Vampire Slayer released one of the most powerful Big Bads from the original series, and they may destroy the world.

BY BRANDON ZACHARY
PUBLISHED 6 HOURS AGO

Spoiler:

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #23 by Jeremy Lambert, Ramon Bachs, Raul Angulo & Ed Dukeshire, on sale now

The "Big Bad" in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a term that referred to the ultimate enemy of each season of the series, each with their own dark intentions and plans for the world. But one of them, Dark Willow, came dangerously close to destroying the world, despite spending most of the rest of the series as a hero. Now, this dark reflection of a Scooby has come to the modern-reboot, and the key to defeating her might already be lost.

The current Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics just unleashed their version of Dark Willow without a heroic Xander to bring her back from the brink, and it's all Anya's fault.

Spoiler:

The current version of Willow Rosenberg has been through a lot recently, losing her best friend Xander, breaking up with her girlfriend Rose, and finding herself increasingly drawn into the magical side of the world. Even her most recent encounters with the scheming Anya -- which resulted in her gaining a relic that allowed her to explore the world in a ghost-like form -- has a secondary effect Willow didn't see coming. While trying to remove the amulet, dark magic spreads further through her, leading to dark cracks appearing across her skin. In giving her the amulet, Anya has "released the floodgates" of the young woman's true potential, before she was fully ready to control it all. Willow is transformed into a new form with a crueler personality, with dark hair and black eyes, the hallmarks of Dark Willow.

Dark Willow was one of the biggest twists in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Willow spent seasons of the original series learning about magic and perfecting spell-crafting in her own right. But by Season 6, her ambitions and appetite for magic had grown to a dangerous level. When her girlfriend Tara was murdered in front of her by a wayward bullet meant for Buffy, Willow embraced the full dark powers at her disposal and became Dark Willow. She promptly murdered Warren -- the villain who'd killed Tara -- and set about bringing the end of the world so she could escape her own pain and "spare" the rest of the world the torment she'd been through. She fought her way through a magically-empowered Giles and almost ended all life until Xander stepped in, who talked her back from the edge.

Spoiler:

Dark Willow remained a possible dark future for Willow throughout the subsequent Buffy comics, but this new incarnation appears to be a slightly different take on the character. Although she doesn't appear as powerful as the original Dark Willow, the true Willow appears trapped within her own mind, but this version of the character won't be calmed by Xander, who has been turned into a villain himself by embracing his status as a vampire. Dark Willow and Xander even come to blows, recognizing that neither of them is truly the friend they were before. In the chaos, Xander even ends up alongside Buffy Summers, who arrives on the scene to try and save Willow. But Dark Willow could end up becoming far more powerful, with it being implied that she's even capable of draining the mystical powers of others, as she does to some of Xander's followers.

This could end up bringing her closer to the power levels she reached in the original series, which made her a potential world-ender. Willow has been hinted to have the potential to reach that power in the new universe, but it's still frightening to see a particularly brutal version of Willow arrive in the storyline so early. Coupled with the other threats that have already emerged across Sunnydale, this could end up causing some more serious conflict for Buffy and her friends going forward, especially if they're forced to fight against her and Xander at the same time. She even may have done serious damage to Xander with a powerful blast. It also continues to paint Anya and her mysterious mission for the future of this universe in a more sinister light. If Anya has already unleashed Dark Willow, there's no telling what else Anya is planning.

Does Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25 Hold The Key To The Foil Multiverse?

Posted on March 31, 2021 | by Rich Johnston

Last month, Boom Studios announced Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25, out in May, and claimed that everything you knew about the Chosen One is wrong. Okay, that latter bit was our reading in between the lines. The publisher did promise the anniversary issue would "kick off the biggest Buffy story of the century" however.

We've received relatively little information since the original solicitation was released, despite its early FOC date rapidly approaching this coming Monday, April 5th. Which begs us to ask the question – what does Boom have planned?

Since taking over the franchise in 2019, the publisher, along with writers Jordie Bellaire and Jeremy Lambert, Coom Studios have offered up what might be best described as a remix of the original television series. Or perhaps reimagined it like Marvel did with Ultimate Spider-Man, which has also been a successful formula for Boom with their Power Rangers franchise.

Aside from the obvious change of setting the series in modern times rather than the 1990s, the series has also zigged where the television series zagged. For example, original Scooby Gang member, Xander Harris was turned into a vampire early in the series, but saved from complete damnation by his best friend Willow who gave her half her soul. The series also already has not one, not two, but three Slayers – Buffy, Kendra, and Faith – thanks to the first two Slayers entering the Hellmouth to prevent armageddon. Other characters like Anyanka, Robin Wood, and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce who didn't appear in the television series until middle or later seasons have been active much earlier in this comic remix. And that's just scratching the surface of the changes to Buffy continuity.

So what is "the biggest Buffy story of the century"?

The first signs may have emerged in issue #23, released earlier this month, where Willow's activation of a mysterious, mystical gem given to her by Anya appears to have transformed her… or perhaps replaced her with Dark Willow. This Dark Willow seems to know, and resent, a different Buffy. What does it mean for the Boom comic series? I'm hearing that issue #24, out next Wednesday, April 7th, pulls back the curtain in a big way and results in the death of a key character. My prediction is it finally pays off on the "Buffyverse" and "Multiverse" we've been hearing about since last year. The problem is the issue won't be released until after retailers have to place orders for Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25.

It comes down to the full foil cover by hot cover artist Frany, which requires a longer production time leaving Boom with the choice to FOC earlier than normal, set the print run without final orders, or ship the foil cover later than the regular covers. It's an imperfect solution, but well worth it, as Boom has been riding their foil cover program to great success of late. Their Local Comic Shop Day reprint of Something Is Killing the Children #1, which outsold the first printing, is still fetching $20 on the aftermarket. Meanwhile, BRZRKR #1 first print foils go for over cover price despite having over 134,000 copies in the channel. But the hottest foil right now is BRZRKR #1 second print, which has hit the $100 aftermarket threshold. Which does make one wonder how the three foil covers they have slated for Ram V and Filipe Andrades' The Many Deaths of Laila Starr will do…

So it's no wonder Boom is putting a foil on Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25. But in so doing, they have to FOC the series 2 weeks early — before the events of issue #24 hit comic shops, shaking up the status quo, and before retailers have a chance to read the issue so they can really understand how much the storyline events will increase reader interest or gauge how collectors will disrupt sales chasing this latest Boom foil cover.

Will retailers order up for the anniversary issue based on Boom's solicitation promises? Or will they treat it simply like the next issue of a long-running series? And if so, will they be caught short when the truth behind the Boom series is revealed? Well, don't say we didn't warn you. Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25 FOCs this coming Monday, April 5th.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Kills a Classic Scooby Gang Member

A major member of the core Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast was just killed and set off a potentially major new development for the Scoobies.

BY BRANDON ZACHARY
PUBLISHED 1 HOUR AGO

Spoiler:

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24 by Jeremy Lambert, Ramon Bahs, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now

The modern Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book has been making serious changes to the canon of the original Buffyverse, giving character's new arcs and accelerating some key transformations. However, one of the most radical deviations from the original series just got even further from established lore, which could set up another major shift for an important member of the story's original cast.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24 just killed Xander, again. But given the circumstances surrounding this demise, this truly might finally be the end of this vampiric version of the character.

Spoiler:

In the original continuity, Xander became a consistent ally and friend to Buffy and a foundational member of the Scoobies, the informal term for the group of evil-fighting heroes of Sunnydale. However, the modern incarnation of the character has had a far rougher experience. As a far more put-upon and despondent version of the character, Xander was eventually lured into the night by Drusilla and bitten by the vampire. Drusilla intended for him to die, only for Spike to share some of his blood, which began his transformation into a vampire. But Willow was able to sacrifice half of her soul to stop the full transformation and instead turn Xander into a half-vampire.

Xander used his newfound abilities to help the Scoobies for a time before the events of the "Hellmouth" crossover forced him to sacrifice this bond and have his soul fade. While his friends initially believed this resulted in his death, it only ensured the fully vampiric form of Xander was able to finally rise up. Quickly establishing himself as the new "Big Bad" of Sunnydale, Xander tried to manipulate things to be reunited with his "best friend." But his efforts only resulted in more chaos, building to the events of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24. While Buffy tries to help Willow control her darker mystical impulses, Xander finds himself in the Sunnydale High courtyard facing off with Faith. Xander proves to be a capable enough fighter to hold her at bay, even biting her before Kendra arrives to help and force him back.

Spoiler:

But when Willow descends to the courtyard, seemingly back in control of herself, Xander becomes distracted for one moment too long. Faith takes the chance to drive a stake into his back, causing Xander to crumble to dust and ash as he reaches out to Willow one more time. This seems to be the end of the vampiric Xander, as there's little way to reverse the full destruction of his body. While the series is full of magic and resurrections, this seems (at least on the surface) to be a fairly final fate for this version of Xander. But Willow, consumed by her grief, quickly opens a portal to try and find him, which results in many of the Scoobies being dragged into alternate dimensions.

Perhaps there's a chance Willow will find Xander -- or at least another reality's version of him, which could result in her either bringing him back to their universe or at least coming to terms with the loss of her Xander. It also marks the third time Xander has been "killed" in the series, effectively making him the Kenny McCormick of this Buffyverse. But even his final moments in Sunnydale could be a tease of dark things to come, with some of his final words being a warning to Faith that the Scoobies would inevitably turn on her. With her killing of Xander, it's likely there'll be additional drama with the other teens, which could lead this version of Faith down a similar road as her original incarnation, where she ended up striking out on her own.
