Anopther Buffy # 3 variant cover.

Scott Buoncristiano Homages “Hush” In Buffy The Vampire Slayer #3 Cover – COMICON

Scott Buoncristiano Homages “Hush” In Buffy The Vampire Slayer #3 Cover

by Hannah Means Shannon

We’re pleased to be the first to reveal a new variant cover for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3 coming in March from Boom! Studios and created by the horror artist Scott Buoncristiano (Harry Potter: Magical Film Projections, Dead Rabbit).

His cover has been designed as a tribute to the iconic television episode “Hush” in the new series born of a partnership between Boom! Studios and 20th Century Fox Consumer Products. The series is written by Eisner Award-nominated Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and illustrated by Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), along with series creator and story consultant Joss Whedon (the writer/director behind Firefly, Marvel’s The Avengers, and more).

In the third issue of the series, we’ll find “Buffy and the Scooby Gang (the name was Xander’s idea, he’s workshopping it, it probably won’t stick)” uncovering more about Sunnydale’s dark underbelly and making a “shocking discovery” about the nature of the Hellmouth. Drusilla, Spike, and Cordelia will also feature.

As you probably know, Buffy The Vampire Slayer originally premiered on the WB Network on March 10th, 1997 and ran for seven seasons from 1997-2003, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as “Buffy Summers.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer features a main cover by Kevin Wada (She-Hulk), along with a variant cover by Matt Smith (Barbarian Lord).

Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor at Boom! Studios, says of the new cover:

Some episodes of Buffy make you sad or happy or excited or maybe even terrified. But ‘Hush’ made you feel all of them at the same time and it’s one of the reasons it remains a high watermark for storytelling. Scott Buoncristiano’s cover conjures up that emotional stake to the heart perfectly on this cover, as we continue our tribute the best episodes of Buffy.

Print copies of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3 will be available for sale on March 13th, 2019 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the Boom! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the Boom! Studios app.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer': Exclusive First Look at New Series

By Jamie Lovett - December 13, 2018

Buffy is back! ComicBook.com has an exclusive first look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1, kicking off the new series from Boom! Studios.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer comes from Eisner Award-nominated writer Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), with Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon acting as story consultant.

The new series reimagines Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the beginning, putting Buffy Summers and the Scoobies back in high school, but in a world that looks a lot more like our world does today than it did in 1996.

The new series will return to the “high school is hell” concept, with Buffy trying to balance her responsibilities as the Slayer with making new friends at a new school, passing the next pop quiz, and maybe having some fun along the way.

“Once you fight your way through all the monsters of the week and threats around every corner, Buffy is about something we’ve all experienced – the awkward, uncomfortable journey of figuring out who we choose to be. Dan Mora captures the spirit of that struggle with the perfect style and attitude for slaying the monsters hiding in the dark...and in the light of day,” Boom! executive editor Jeanine Schaefer said previously. “As you can see, Jordie and Dan have some huge plans for Buffy and the Gang – starting with some pretty major introductions of characters like Anya and…well, I won’t spoil that one quite yet. But let’s just say by issue #4, it’ll be clear that this is a love letter to the Buffy we all adore and will go in directions that no one ever expected.”

You can see Mora’s original character designs for the new series here.

Keep reading to get your first look a Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 goes on sale January 9, 2019 with a main cover by Mondo illustrator Matthew Taylor, variant covers by Kevin Wada (She-Hulk), Royal Dunlap (Spitball), Becca Carey (Bitch Planet), and Jen Bartel (Blackbird), two special interactive variant covers from Miguel Mercado (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) that invite fans to chose #TeamSlayer or #TeamVamp, and two rare variant covers from Kaiti Infante featuring Willow and Vampire Willow.

EXCLUSIVE: Buffy's Robin Wood Revamp is the Comic's Biggest Change Yet

Robin Wood is coming to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot comic, but this is a very different take on the character.

Sounds like a complete re-imaging of Robin Wood and a potential love interest for Buffy.

EXCLUSIVE: Buffy Comic Reboot Promises a 'Mind-Blowing' Hellmouth Revelation

Xander is in trouble on Matthew Taylor's cover, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 promises an even bigger revelation for the rebooted continuity.

CBR Exclusives
Jan 9, 2019

When BOOM! Studios' Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot releases its fourth issue in April, not only will the series debut an unnamed "major" character, it promises readers a revelation that will have a "mind-blowing" effect on the Buffy mythos.

According to the publisher, Jordie Bellaire, Dan Mora and Joss Whedon will reveal something about the Hellmouth that will not only change the destiny of a major player, it will surprise even longtime fans of the franchise. And while Matthew Taylor's variant cover (which CBR is debuting below) puts Xander in the middle of some serious vampire trouble, the real revelation is bigger than that -- Hellmouth big.

"As you can see, Jordie and Dan have some huge plans for Buffy and the Gang – starting with some pretty major introductions of characters like Anya and…well, I won’t spoil that one quite yet," Executive Editor Jeanine Schaefer said in an earlier statement about the upcoming fourth issue. "Let’s just say by issue #4, it’ll be clear that this is a love letter to the Buffy we all adore and will go in directions that no one ever expected."

The description BOOM! has released to CBR bolsters that claim. "The reimagining of Joss Whedon's groundbreaking series reaches the game-changing final chapter of the first arc," the description reads. "Buffy and the Scooby Gang (the name was Xander’s idea, he’s workshopping it, it probably won’t stick) delve deeper into the heart of Sunnydale’s underbelly—and make a shocking discovery about the true nature of the Hellmouth. There’s no turning back for anyone on Team Slayer in this absolutely mind-blowing issue that fans can’t afford to miss."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4, by Jordie Bellaire, Dan Mora and Joss Whedon, with a variant cover by Mondo artist Matthew Taylor, arrives in stores Wednesday, April 3, 2019.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot Introduces 'Historic' Slayer

By Newsarama Staff
January 11, 2019

Press Release

BOOM! Studios today unveiled a main cover for BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #4 by award-winning illustrator FeiFei Ruan (Descendants of the Crane, Jim Henson’s Storyteller: Giants) featuring the first appearance of a Slayer from ancient eighth-century China. This game-changing issue of the hotly anticipated series will debut in stores April 3, 2019, in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products. Catch the first appearance of a major character in Buffy’s life in this issue, as well as the life-altering turn of events that changes one character’s destiny forever.

The reimagining of Joss Whedon's groundbreaking series reaches the game-changing final chapter of the first arc as Buffy and the Scooby Gang (the name was Xander’s idea, he’s workshopping it, it probably won’t stick) delve deeper into the heart of Sunnydale’s underbelly—and make a shocking discovery about the true nature of the Hellmouth. There’s no turning back for anyone on Team Slayer in this absolutely mind-blowing issue that fans can’t afford to miss.

Welcome back to the Hellmouth, as Eisner Award-nominated writer Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), along with series creator and story consultant Joss Whedon (the visionary writer/director behind Firefly, Marvel’s The Avengers, and more), reimagine the groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon from the very beginning.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer premiered on the WB Network on March 10th, 1997. The Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated series, which ran for seven seasons from 1997-2003, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as “Buffy Summers.” Chosen to battle vampires, demons and other forces of darkness, Buffy is aided by a Watcher who guides and teaches her as she surrounds herself with a circle of friends called the “Scooby Gang.”

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #4 features main covers by acclaimed Mondo illustrator Matthew Taylor and fan favorite artist Kevin Wada (She-Hulk).

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to a world-class group of licensed comic book series and ambitious original series, including Joss Whedon’s Firefly, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Planet of the Apes, Abbott, Mech Cadet Yu, Grass Kings, and Klaus.

Print copies of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #4 will be available for sale on April 3, 2019 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer': Xander Vlogs on Kevin Wada Variant, Hellmouth Secret Teased

By Jamie Lovett - January 10, 2019

As it turns out, Xander is a vlogger in the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot from Boom Studios.

ComicBook.com can exclusively reveal Kevin Wada’s variant cover for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4. The cover features Xander in full streaming mode.

Take a look below:

Boom teases that Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 will feature the first appearance of a major Buffy character and a life-altering event for another. The issue will conclude the first arc of Boom’s reboot and also is said reveal a shocking secret about the nature of the Hellmouth.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is written by Jordie Bellaire with art by Dan Mora. Buffy creator Joss Whedon serves as story consultant.

The new Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic reimagines the life of Buffy Summers from the beginning of her career as the Slayer. Buffy, Willow, Cordelia, and Xander are once again high school students, just like they were when the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series premiered. The new series will return to the “high school is hell” concept, with Buffy trying to balance her responsibilities as the Slayer with making new friends at a new school, passing the next pop quiz, and maybe having some fun along the way. The difference this time is that the world Buffy lives in looks like the world we live in today.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a love letter to everything we love about our favorite Slayer and her world - but as you've seen with Drusilla’s introduction as The Mistress, there are no rules we won't break. Reinventing Robin Wood as a mysterious new teenage ally - and maybe more - for Buffy is a key part of that new direction," said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios in a press release. "But just like his original introduction to TV audiences, our Robin Wood comes loaded with a mysterious past, a secret mission and a special connection to the inhabitants of Sunnydale. We can't tell you when he debuts in the series... only that it's going to be big. And we’re not done breaking rules, yet."

You can check out Mora's character designs for the new series and a preview of the first several pages of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1. Boom has previously revealed that at least one Buffy character, Robin Wood, is getting a major overhaul in this rebooted timeline.

What do you think of Kevin Wada's Buffy cover? Let us know in the comments!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 goes on sale April 3rd.

Best Shots Advance Review: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #1 'a Perfect New Start' (9/10)

By Robert Reed, Newsarama Contributor January 14, 2019

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1
Written by Jordie Bellaire
Art by Dan Mora and Raúl Angulo
Letters by Ed Dukeshire
Published by BOOM! Studios
Review by Robert Reed
‘Rama Rating: 9 out of 10

Buffy, Xander, Willow, and the denizens of Sunnydale are back - but not quite as we know them. While the previous series existed within the same continuity as the television show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 presents a fresh start in the modern era. Written by Jordie Bellaire with art by Dan Mora and Raúl Angulo, the debut honors the legacy while carving out its own mark.

From the opening lines, it becomes clear that this isn’t quite the Buffy readers know. She types on a computer for one. Jordie Bellaire captures the voice of Buffy Summers through the use of an electronic journal (rendered beautifully by letterer Ed Dukeshire). It’s a change that new readers might not be able to appreciate, bringing forth a stark contrast to the television show that had to adapt to there being a computer in every home.

It’s the smallness of the changes that allow Jordie Bellaire to ease readers into this new world. As Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 progresses, the world becomes simultaneously more familiar and more alien. Characters are introduced slowly and with distinct voices. Dan Mora’s artwork helps in this process, capturing the likenesses of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, and Nicholas Brendon (and maybe a few more familiar faces). There’s always a concern with licensed comic books that the memorable live-action characters won’t quite blend with the other characters, but Mora has found a nice middle ground in the detail that makes them both recognizable and fully integrated in their world on the page.

The visual balance between the dialogue and artwork is really exceptional. A page in which Buffy receives a note in class is rendered completely without dialogue, which allows the reader full immersion in the moment. Mora also does well with the action sequences. It’s not much of a spoiler to say that vampires are slain in this book, and Mora crafts some entertaining combat that helps establish the Slayer concept. Raúl Angulo’s saturated colors provide a lot to the story, keeping the tone adventurous rather than dour, while also allowing for rich shadows in the artwork.

Bellaire, Mora, Angulo, and Dukeshire build this world beautifully, and neither die-hard Buffy fans nor curious new readers should feel alienated. In part because of the familiarity, the issue is able to avoid a lot of the expository woes that plague debut issues. Buffy fans may feel the issue starts too small – that sense of newness that exists in the periphery of the pages may create some anxiety that this wasn’t quite new enough to justify the jettisoning of prior continuities.

Ultimately, Jordie Bellaire and Dan Mora have found the right pace for this new adventure. Rather than rush through a Wikipedia section of “Differences from the Source Material,” Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 makes its mark by putting the characters first. Strong character moments make the book stand out, and that makes it the perfect new start.
