Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 10 #29 (Comics) Review | Brutal Gamer Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 10 #29 (Comics) Review Mark Sammut Dark Horse Comics return with the penultimate issue of Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Season 10. Following the strongest season since the TV show ended, will fans get a bang or a whimper? http://brutalgamer.com/wp-content/up...-1-195x300.jpg It is kind of hard to believe, but this version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been around for almost 20 years. If one were to take the comics as canon, which the numbered seasons are, then these characters have been evolving in front of our very eyes for nearly two decades. Since the time span within the universe of the TV show is about 1:1, then it has to be assumed that Buffy and Co. are approaching 30 (at least) in the comics. The biggest challenge faced by the creators is to effectively transition these loveable heroes into maturity while maintaining the charm of their slightly adolescent style of dialogue. Wit, no matter how hilarious, should not be the same at age 15 and 30. Yes, the bad guys are right there. Easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats. Christos Cage’s script is as faced past and engaging as always but it does seem like there is no new ground left for the gang to thread. Even the title card, Taking Down the Big Bad, fails to hide that this merely another situation of finding someone for Buffy and Spike to hit. With the Vampyr book in his grasp, Vengeance Demon D’Hoffyrn aims to remove the limitations that govern his boundless power (that humans must wish for something) and sets his sight on taking over the world. Accompanied by evil NOT Anya, a final large scale battle between the Scoobies and D’Hoffyrn has begun. Huge ending aside, the plot (and the whole current arc) struggles to justify it’s existence all that much. Even interesting recent developments (like Dawn and Xander’s road trip through dimensions) did not amount to much more than filler. D’Hoffyrn, a storied character within the Buffyverse, is reduced to a Big Bad with only hints of depth. http://brutalgamer.com/wp-content/up...07/buffy-2.jpg Saying that, the climax does suggest that the status quo will NOT be returned too. This would not be the first time that a potential shake-up ends up being nothing more than a detour but, maybe, Season 11 will bring new beginnings. Where the plot whimpers, the humor bangs. Cage’s script sparkles with a hilarious opening scene that left me smiling for all of its pages. The banter between the opposing armies does not fail to entertain, either, despite certain characters bluntly restating their character development for about the fourth time in as many issues. Angst tends to be heavy within the Buffyverse, but as long as it leads to actual maturity, I am more than willing to stick by it. http://brutalgamer.com/wp-content/up...07/buffy-4.jpg ConsistencyBuffy The Vampire Slayer Season 10 #29 Comic Review Rebekah Isaacs masterfully handles the art, again, for issue 29. At this point, the biggest compliment I can give her is that these drawings, in my mind, represent Buffy Summers and Co. as much as Sarah Michelle Gellar and the rest of the cast. Isaacs art might not be particularly flashy but she maintains a high quality throughout the issue. Hear are my brief thoughts on the two most recent Buffy issues(I was able to get to my shop to get # 29 late yesterday).Since I got Buffy # 28 so late last month due to being sick when it came out,I decided I would wait and post my thoughts with this week's # 29.
So here are my brief thoughts on Buffy # 28.This is one of those issues where I don't like the issue due to my own preferences.but don't think the issue is bad and there were thingss I really enjoyed.Given my feelings on spuffy,no I did not like that aspect of the issue and I won't lie,and say I'm happy about spuffy most likely continuing into season 11(the season 11 info this week prett much confirms it). But again,I don't think that makes this a bad issue or anything,just a a issue which had developments I didn't like and were hoping against.For fans of Buffy/Spike,I can certainly see the good for them and why many spuffy fans would be happy. Didn't really have much thoughts on the Willow breakup with Lake and "firing." As usual with season 10,there were elements I really did like in the issue.The Xander/Dawn stuff and their journey back I really liked and I loved the gang all together aspect of the last part of the issue(considering what happens in the next issue,looking back,this is now bittersweet). So there were parts I really went for but my feelings on spuffy did overshadow the issue as a whole for me. Here are my thoughts on Buffy # 29. This was a great climax issue I thought.Yes,I agree with others that the board room meet with the baddies was hokey but I still thought is was fun. I thought the "believing" aspect of the book's magic was a interesting twist. The confrontation and action were handled well And then the climax with Xander.Man,this would of been so great in live action.I thought the whole thing was powerful and shocking(even spoiled).Would loved to have the cast play this out onscreen. Now,do I think Xander is really dead and gone.I don't know.It's the cliffhanger end to the issue so it could go either way as far as Xander really being dead for good or not.My feelings on killing chracter's in the verse now is well known but my gut tells me Xander is not gone.I have some reasons for this and I'll say why I have those reasons next issue no matter how this plays out. So, overall,I thought this was a strong issue IMO. CBR News: Obviously, it's kind of hard to talk about anything coming up when the big finale of "Season 10" has yet to arrive on shelves. This year's story definitely stuck to that stated intent of keeping the story personal like the show, but as Buffy and gang pull themselves together to face down Big Bad D'Hoffryn, how did you work to "level things up"? Did you look to any past finales for inspiration? Christos Gage: No -- I didn't want to take the approach of, "Hey, that was cool in Season X, so let's do something like it." Or as Drew Goddard calls it, "Doing karaoke." It was more about what felt right for this season and where these characters are now. If there was an overall guiding principle, it was that, just as the season itself was character focused, I tried to make the finale that way too, even if there's also explosions and fire and blood raining from the sky. While there have been a lot of new changes, characters and ideas introduced over the course of "Season 10," the core of the story revolved around the characters finding themselves while working to rewrite the rules of magic. How does the finale put a final spin on all the drama surrounding the "Vampyr" book and its effect on the world at large? As you mentioned, I need to be careful of spoilers. But I have said before that, much in the same way the TV show took universal experiences most of us go through in our teens and added a supernatural spin, that's what we were trying to do this season, but with adulthood. It's about that scary point when you're really on your own for the first time, making crucial decisions about the rest of your life, and you have to sink or swim without any parents, teachers, Watchers or other authority figures involved, for better or worse. Many of our characters have been hesitant to take that step, or really commit to it, and the finale will be about them getting to the point where they have to "own it" -- the final arc's title. Looking forward, the traditional first step on the road to a new season is a summit with Joss Whedon. Did you have an opportunity to get the ball rolling that way this year? Who came along, and what felt like a primary question that drove the next season? Yes, we did -- it was actually in two parts this time. Joss and I met for dinner, where we talked in a broader sense about the things we wanted to think about for Season 11. Then we had the traditional day-long summit which included Joss, me, editor Freddye Miller, my wife and frequent writing partner Ruth, Season 9 writer Andrew Chambliss, former Buffy editor Sierra Hahn, and TV/travel writer Bob Harris. Without getting into anything too spoilery, we discussed trying something different for Season 11. Season 8 was big and cosmic in its scope, while Seasons 9 and 10 were more grounded. Joss felt it was time to get bigger again -- not the universe-spanning kind of bigness we saw in Season 8, but somewhere between that and the past couple seasons. At the same time, we decided to shorten the season from the 25 or 30 issues we've been doing to 12 -- sort of like an old-school comic book maxi-series, like "Crisis on Infinite Earths," or shorter-run cable TV shows like "The People vs. OJ Simpson," or the British model, where the season has a defined beginning, middle and end, and tells a specific story. Content-wise, again being annoyingly vague, it's informed by some of the things going on in the world today. Joss talked about how, as a father, it seemed to him as if he had kids and suddenly the world went all to hell, with wars and environmental crises and so on, and he worries about what his children will have to face in the future. (Let me hasten to add that Buffy is not having kids this season. I don't have any, so I'd be the absolute wrong writer to do that!) That doesn't mean Buffy will be tackling climate change -- it's more something that's reflected in the tone and approach. While most past seasons have ended with a threatened apocalypse or calamity of some sort, this season begins with a disaster that our heroes fail to stop. And it just gets worse from there. This is your second year leading the core Buffy book. While your "Angel & Faith" run certainly got your feet into this world, is there anything you felt you really learned doing "Season 10" that will have an effect on "Season 11"? Is there any part of this world you feel you've yet to explore? Oh, sure. One thing I learned from Season 10 is that when you open the can of worms that is "the rules of magic," you end up covering a lot of beautiful art with lengthy exposition -- and it's a tricky juggling act to make sure you don't contradict your own rules, let alone those established over nine prior seasons! So while that's fun to do sometimes, we won't be doing it in Season 11 -- there'll be a lot less of what I call "Wikipedia stuff." The interesting thing about approaching Season 11 so differently is that I feel in a lot of ways like it's a new gig -- but one where I'm used to the characters and have a terrific creative rapport with my collaborators. So it's got some of the excitement (and nervousness) of a new job, without the growing pains that come with them. As for the Buffyverse, there are always parts of it left to explore -- it's a big Verse! The other evolving part of the Buffyverse in its years as a comic has been that Joss and company have had their eyes on exploring what it's like for this character to be in a different phase of her life -- beyond high school or those awkward early 20s. What do you view as the position Buffy's in this season in terms of her long, crazy journey into "adulting"? It's definitely on the spectrum of the journey to adulthood, but it's very focused. In Season 11, it's about when something really bad happens that affects you and everyone around you, and you have to deal with the fallout -- how it impacts you and those you love. It's also about Buffy facing a problem she can't solve just by punching or staking someone. Though it's pretty safe to say both those things will happen. And for the rest of the cast, we had a lot of relationships started, broken and just downright twisted over the course of the last year. Who are some of the supporting Scoobies you're most excited to continue with in "Season 11" and why? Spike will be going through some stuff, and I'm excited about what were doing with Willow. This season, we'll see that she's become a leader in the Wiccan community, and that's been very interesting, because it's something that's been a part of her character for a long time, but has never really been delved into. In terms of the storyline, that means when things go bad, she's not just trying to look out for herself and her friends. She has a whole community that needs her. Artist Rebekah Isaacs is back for another round of collaboration. What's it like to be at the point where your working relationship is so well established on the book, and how do you view the big horror visual side of things knowing exactly what she can bring to the page? Rebekah is definitely back, with a couple of planned guest-illustrated issues to help with the schedule, seeing as how she does both pencils and inks. And so are ace colorist Dan Jackson and Comicraft, happily. You're right that Rebekah and I have been working together for a long time -- I want to say five years or so? We're at the point where I know very well how good she is with both creature design and character "acting." Her skill with facial expressions and body language means that I can write much like I would for living actors -- characters can be saying one thing and I can be confident that their face and body will be conveying a different emotion that the reader will get. To be honest, as a result of working together so long, I've probably gotten significantly lazier, especially with creature designs, which I tend to just give very broad strokes on (sometimes as little as "snake like" or "humanoid") and let her go to town, because what she comes up with is always so great! At this point in time, what would you say you're most excited for about "Season 11" in terms or story, collaborators or Joss' whole world? I think I'm most excited about the new "maxi-series" structure of the season, and the change-up in the scale of the story. That's also the scariest part, because we haven't done it before -- but the Whedonverse has never been about taking the easiest path, has it? |

If you’re into Dark Horse’s Whedonverse, read on for some key developments revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2016! ‘Buffy’ and ‘Angel’ Buffy is heading into season 11, and writer Christos Gage was on hand at SDCC’s “Welcome to the Whedonverse” panel to provide some tantalizing updates: Buffy and Spike are together for real. After a rocky season 10, Joss Whedon and the team decided to let the pair pursue a real relationship in season 11. According to Gage, the decision was mainly made because Joss Whedon realized the relationship would be uncomfortable for Buffy — so, he said, “let’s do it.” Season 11 will start with “a catastrophe right off the bat” that’ll shape the characters’ arcs in the season. Unlike previous seasons, season 11 will be less all over the place, “bigger in scale,” but shortened to an over-arching 12-issue story. There’s more Angel coming! Although nothing re. Angel and Faith will be officially announced until NYCC, Gage could promise that, “there is news about Angel coming – Angel’s coming back!” On the Buffy: The High School Years series, writer Kel McDonald could reveal that one of the stories takes place in between two season 1 episodes, while Principal Flutie was still alive. And we’ll see important students like Jonathan pop up in the background! http://static2.hypable.com/wp-conten...Dark-Horse.jpg ‘Firefly’ and ‘Serenity’ The new Serenity miniseries comic “No Power in the ‘Verse” is coming out in the fall, and writer Chris Roberson was on hand to share some secrets! Some relationships will change. The story takes place after the events of “Leaves on the Wind,” and as such we’ll see the relationships between the characters change from what we know — there are “significant changes” coming, and “some things don’t work out.” One character has a secret coming out they’d rather not reveal; we learn a new piece of untold backstory. There’s a “hilarious subplot” involving Jayne that started as a gag; Roberson discovered that Jayne was his favorite character to write although he assumed it’d be Zoë. One of the villains in “No Power in the ‘Verse” is the Operative Kalista, whom we met in “Leaves on the Wind.” “River’s arc is pretty central to what happens” in the comic, says Roberson, but assures us that “it’s not just the River show.” Buffy season 11 and Serenity: No Power in the ‘Verse are both debuting in the fall of 2016. |

SDCC: Conversations with Joss Whedon | Comic Book Resources SDCC: Conversations with Joss Whedon The creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the director of "Avengers" addresses his (many) Comic-Con fans in a panel presented by Dark Horse http://www.comicbookresources.com/im...L-6e215hed.jpg Albert Ching, Managing Editor "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly" creator Joss Whedon -- you may also know him as the writer/director of Marvel Studios' "Avengers" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" -- is set to address the Hall H crowd Friday afternoon at Comic-Con International in San Diego, in the "Conversations with Joss Whedon" panel presented by Dark Horse Comics, the publisher of "Buffy" and "Serenity" comic books. CBR is there live, so keep hitting refresh for the very latest. Whedon admitted to the audience that it's been something of a "slow year" for him, creative output-wise, but did start the panel with some news: That he'd be co-writing a Dark Horse miniseries about Giles (currently de-aged to 13) going back to school. "In a fit of class, I'm not calling it '21 Vamp Street,'" Whedon said. Whedon also said he's finishing his folk album with Shawnee Kilgore, because he wants "to make even less money than comic book people." Turning quickly to fan questions, an audience member asked Whedon if he ever considered writing a story focusing on slayer Nikki Wood. Whedon expressed his enthusiasm for the character, but said at this point he'd like to focus on "moving forward," given how he's spent a lot of time recently working on adaptations of things that have been around for a long time -- and at this point, the "Buffy" characters fall under the category of "something that's been around for a long time." A fan asked for Whedon's favorite death scene -- both created by him, and other people. "Gosh, so many to choose from," Whedon replied. "Nothing's going to come close to the experience of killing Fred [in "Angel"]... it's like Jeffrey Dahmer's up here. I'm a good person, I swear!" "The scene itself was really exciting," Whedon continued. "I love Alexis [Denisof] and Amy [Acker]. They were just acting their hearts out. At the end of that whole day was just them in her bedroom as she's getting sicker and sicker, and finally dying in his arms." Whedon said after a draining day of shooting that scene, the three of them went out for a drink, and just sat silently. "And that's how I came up with the Avengers tag." His favorite death scene from something else? "The Wild Bunch." An independent filmmaker asked Whedon for advice about getting funding for his projects. "I have no idea," Whedon answered. "Beyond that, right now, I think it's enormously difficult," he said, because "trying something new" isn't a big part of the current culture. "Right now it's, find a brand name that people already know. We've got to a state where the studios are pretty relentless about just having an in before they even start a project. That's not the case with all films, but it is for a ton of them." Whedon talked about the new Giles comic a bit. "Giles is, as you know, 12, that's why we're sending him back to school, to see it from the other side for a while," Whedon said. "And it will be hilarious, we hope." When asked wows him in an actor's audition, Whedon said it's a combination of being "enormously grounded and completely chaotic... and also if they can just walk in and be Amy Acker, that helps their cause a lot." What are the "first few steps" when Whedon gets an idea? "I fall to the ground and weep, and thank all the gods I had another one, because they don't come as fast as they used to," he replied, adding that the best part is the first spark of a new idea. "There's a point where your internal monologue becomes a dialogue. And that's just transcendent. I have the best job in the world." Whedon gave an update on a "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" sequel: He said they all want to do it, but his collaborators -- Zack Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon -- are all busy, especially Jed Whedon and Tancharoen. "They are busy running a show that I am executive figurehead of," Whedon said, alluding to "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." But the desire to do it is there, along with another musical project. A fan asked if Whedon had any ideas of crossovers between his creations and other properties he's worked on. Whedon pointed out that he wanted to playfully tease a connection between Buffy Summer and Scott Summers during his "Astonishing X-Men" run, and that there's something of a Wolfram & Hart reference in Thor's dream sequence in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" -- but ultimately, "I don't like to become too self-indulgent with these things, because at some point it becomes about me, taking my dolls and putting them on top of each other." Whedon's favorite Big Bad in "Buffy"? He picked The Mayor from season three. An audience member asked about Whedon's approach to structure when writing. Whedon said he basically writes the hero's journey -- "somebody on a journey to power, or somebody who's dealing with the power they have." Whedon praised the film "Bone Tomahawk" as "criminally underrated," and a good example of, "There are no rules. If you're going on the journey, you can take it wherever you want." What TV did Whedon watch during his year off? "The Great British Bake Off," "Unreal," "Peaky Blinders" and "Supergirl." On killing off characters -- something Whedon is fairly infamous for -- he said that when people are upset about it, it's a good thing, because it means the characters meant something to them, which is the goal. "In my experience, things are taken suddenly from you," Whedon continued. "To see that happen on a fictional level is my way of dealing with it, and helping people deal with it when it happens to them." Whedon clarified that the new "Dr. Horrible" project is indeed a sequel, not a prequel, picking up with the title character as "the king." Chance of doing more "Fray"? "I'm always hoping to do more 'Fray,'" Whedon said. "That was my first comic ever. Karl Moline did such a great job. Something I'd probably rather have a great idea for and have someone else do, because of that whole 'trying to do a new thing.' But I think she deserves more, and there's more to say." Whedon mentioned that he's currently working on a film, and that when he's done with the script he expects the studios to gather for a "bidding war/intervention." A fan asked about the status of the "Angel and Faith" comic book. "'Angel' is coming back," Whedon said. "We're working it out. It's going to be staggered. It's not going to come out the same time as 'Buffy,' it's going to be a little bit later, probably close to the new year. Angel will have his comic again -- probably not with Faith this time around, just to do something a little different." "I will always come out of these things understanding something better than I did," Whedon said, of the questions asked during his panels. This led to the last question o the session: "What are some tropes that are used constantly that you despise?" "I don't have time to go into all the cliches that I have both reviled and occasionally used," Whedon said. "Hopefully the next thing I do -- that I will be talking to you about in a year's time -- will be a decidedly new version of the story I keep trying to tell." Joss is co-wrting a Giles miniseries where the now young Giles has to go back to school. Joss gave more info on Angel & Faith.Angel will have his own comic again probably after the new year.It won't be coming out at the same time as Buffy in the fall.So basically what I suspected.And Angel probably won't be teamed with Faith this time either. |

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 Comes to a Close – Voice of E Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 Comes to a Close Posted on August 13, 2016 by Elliott Miller Thank you Dark Horse, from those of us who have loved Buffy and her cast of misfit scoobies over the years, and just couldn’t bear to see it all end. You have brought us three entire new seasons worth of Buffy goodness, with character development, dangers new and old, and a big thumbs up from Joss Whedon himself. Now that third new season, Season 10 in the Buffy timeline, is coming to a close in Season 10, Issue #30. The Vengeance Demon D’Hoffryn has plans to eliminate the Buffy crew and take over the world, and some familiar faces have joined him. The final battle is filed with humor, surprises, some smiles and some tears. It’s hard to believe that I can care about these characters so much after all these years off of the silver screen, but Dark Horse, the writing of Christos Gage, and the artwork of Rebekah Isaacs, bring an emotional response out of me every time. Hell, they even got a “Brilliant!” out of me in this issue. Plus, you’ll get a peek at when might be in store for us in Season 11!
