Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Two Fan-Favorites Just Joined the New Scooby Gang

Two classic characters from the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been introduced to the comics Scoobies, and setting up some major new team-ups.

BY BRANDON ZACHARY

Spoiler:

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #20, by Jordie Bellaire, Jeremy Lambert, Ramon Bachs and Raúl Angulo, on sale now.

The Scooby Gang of the BOOM! Studios Buffyverse has been growing and evolving, with new heroes joining the group while contending with former allies turned villainous like Xander. Two more allies just met the rest of the group and might be able to bring some backup to the heroes or bring in new levels of drama.

Robin Wood just introduced Faith and Wesley to the rest of the Scoobies in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #20, setting up a larger group of Buffyverse heroes who can try to contend with the myriad threats currently spreading throughout Sunnydale.

Spoiler:

Faith made her new Buffyverse first appearance in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #19, helping protect a stunned Robin Wood while he's on patrol and fighting a number of different vampires. However, it becomes quickly apparent during a conversation with Robin and Wesley that she has no idea of what vampires really are. She reveals that she only believes that she's dealing with "bad guys" while traveling the country. She's quickly defined as a calm woman and is far more put-together than her television-counterpart. However, she still hasn't revealed the exact reason she's made her way to Sunnydale, or why she left Boston in the first place. The whole time though, she's been followed by Wesley, the young man set to be her Watcher.

In the original Buffyverse, Wesley Wyndham-Pryce was a Watcher assigned to Buffy and Faith in the third season of the series after Giles was fired by the Watchers Council. Introduced as a stuffy and by-the-books Watcher, he eventually also left the order after the chaos of Faith's tenure as a Slayer, which set him up to move to Los Angeles and join with Angel Investigations to fight demons outside of the Hellmouth. In the current Slayerverse, Wesley is a young member of the Watchers Council, haunted by the ghost of Ethan Rayne and initially serving as a researcher for the Council. But after a third Slayer is called into action, Wesley is assigned to serve as her Watcher. Arriving in America, Wesley quickly finds Robin and Faith, convincing them to take him along to visit the other members of the Scoobies.

Spoiler:

After arriving at the Sunnydale High Library, the pair end up discovering the Scoobies during a particularly harsh batch of in-fighting: Giles tries to confront Willow over her meeting with the corrupted Xander, which sets off a potential conflict between Buffy and Willow. Meanwhile, Kendra brings up how Rose had been with Willow while she was performing a spell, setting up Kendra to become a bit jealous over the former couple. There's also the question of the mysterious amulet Willow was given by Anya, who seems to have her own machinations in motion for the city.

With the Scoobies sniping at each other and the various villains circling around them, having a third Slayer and another Watcher join the group might give the Scoobies an additional edge in future conflicts, which will likely come in handy soon since Giles is set to be the next Watcher targeted by a demonic force.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reveals a MAJOR Change to a Classic Character

A classic character from the original Buffyverse just went through a major reinvention in the BOOM! Studios Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.

BY BRANDON ZACHARY

Spoiler:

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #21 by Jordie Bellaire, Jeremy Lambert, Andres Genolet, Raul Angulo & Ed Dukeshire, on sale now

In BOOM! Studios' comics, the characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been reinvented for the modern era, with some serious shifts happening to characters like Xander. But one of the most potentially impactful tweaks has been revealed to have happened to Anya.

As revealed in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #21, the new Buffyverse version of Anya is secretly far more tied to the legacy of the Slayers and the Watchers than she was ever confirmed to have been before -- even having been a Watcher herself in the past.

Spoiler:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #21 explores the origins of Anya. As in the original canon, Anyanka was born centuries before the modern era. Initially, a happily married woman, the discovery that her husband was having an affair led her to embrace chaotic magic to take revenge. This caught the attention of D'hoffyrn, a minor demon who was impressed with her abilities. He explains that Anya is untrained and powerful and that could result in her burning out before realizing her true potential. He offers to make her the magically empowered Patron Saint of Women Scorned, the same title she was granted in the original Buffyverse. And as in the original Buffyverse, she took the position with gusto.

However, the original version of Anya was far less connected to the Slayer lineage than the modern incarnation of the character. It's revealed that after being alive for centuries, Anya somehow ended up in the employ of the Watcher's Council. The secret organization tasked with training and guiding the Slayers, Anya even became the first -- and only -- woman to be put into the field with a Slayer. And by most metrics, she did a wonderful job, helping ensure her Slayer Isabelle reached adulthood despite her responsibility to risk her life on a regular basis. However, that also meant Anya resisted the orders of the Watchers on multiple occasions.

Spoiler:

Eventually, the Watchers grew tired of her insubordination and forcibly removed her from her position as a Watcher. They even used her expulsion as an excuse to bar women from going into the field again, arguing her emotional response to Isabelle's potential death hindered their plans. Less than a month later, Isabelle was killed in the line of duty. All of this explains Anya's knowledge of the Watcher Council and the Slayers in general, while also confirming that her demonic elements were behind her long life. But it also turns out that Buffy and her allies aren't the first modern Slayers Anya encountered. In fact, in her position as the head of the Magic Box, she actually worked frequently with Morgan, the Slayer who directly preceded Buffy.

Working out of a base in Cleveland -- which has long been hinted to be home to another Hellmouth -- Anya became an ally to Morgan. Morgan even lasted longer than any other Slayer, living to the age of 25. But discovering a conspiracy by her own Watcher to ensure her death and continue the cycle of violence that has dominated the Watchers and Slayers relationship, Morgan turns to Anya for help. It's here that Anya reveals her demonic influence is still present, reveling in the chance to help Morgan more or less stage her demise. With an enchanted ring, Anya is able to research Morgan after her death has activated the next Slayer. The two then attack Morgan's old Watcher, killing him and completing her vengeance, while setting up a plan to bring about the end of the Watchers once and for all.

It all adds up to a surprisingly more invested Anya, and a genuine wild-card in the future of this version of the Buffyverse. It explains Anya's own reluctance to work with the Council, and her demonic attributes still being present reveal why someone like Drusilla would seek her out. Still, her plans to bring the end of the Council she failed to redeem centuries earlier make her an inherently intriguing threat going forward, one with a legitimate problem with the Watchers who swear they control and protect the world. Her next moves could even set up a major change in the status quo, opening up this world to be full of Slayers without Watchers. While there are still lots of questions about Anya to be answered, this proves there's far more to her than it initially seemed.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Lost Slayer Has A Major Hero In Her Crosshairs

The Scoobies of the modern Buffy the Vampire Slayer are being targeted by the previous Slayer, Morgan, and she's poised to kill one of them.

BY BRANDON ZACHARY

Spoiler:

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #22 by Jordie Bellaire, Jeremy Lambert, Ramon Bachs, Raul Angulo & Ed Dukeshire, on sale now

The modern Buffy the Vampire Slayer has taken lots of liberties with the original television show's continuity by changing the timeline and introducing radically altered versions of classic characters. And now, it might be about to throw its wildest curveball yet.

The Giles from BOOM! Studios' Buffy the Vampire Slayer might not be long for this world, with the former Slayer Morgan seemingly poised to take his life.

Spoiler:

The Scoobies of the current Buffy the Vampire Slayer series have been dealing with troubling times as of late. Although they are technically stronger than ever thanks to having three active Slayers in Buffy, Kendra and Faith, the rest of the group has been largely splintered: Willow's exploration of magic has opened her up to potential conflict with her friends, Xander has been turned into a vampire and taken up the mantle of the new Big Bad, and the young Watchers Robin and Wesley have been butting heads with the more seasoned Giles. The Scoobies are straining to stay on track, with Buffy especially feeling adrift. She confesses as much to Giles, which leads the pair to have a heart-to-heart conversation about their partnership.

It's a sweet moment between the pair, but it might also be their last. After Buffy leaves, it's revealed that Giles is being targeted by Morgan Palmer. The Slayer who came before Buffy, Morgan was betrayed by her own Watchers and sent into a suicide mission years earlier. But thanks to the efforts of Anya, Morgan was restored to life and able to take her revenge against the Watchers. Now working to bring about the end of the ancient council and give the Slayers their freedom, Morgan's next step seemingly requires another dead Watcher, Giles. Anya recruits Morgan to handle it herself, as Anya can't risk exposing her demonic form to Willow and the rest of the Scoobies quiet yet.

Spoiler:

To Morgan's credit, it's clearly an act she has no interest in carrying out. While she believes that the Watcher's Council must be dismantled and took some joy out of getting her revenge against the people who betrayed her, Morgan is shaken by the revelation that Giles is a good man and a fitting mentor to Buffy. Watching Giles console his troubled young charge brings tears to Morgan's eyes, as she was unaware someone could end up with a Watcher that cared that much about them instead of just seeing them as a weapon in the war against the demonic forces in the world. She still needs to bring down the Watchers though, setting and that sets her up to sneak into Giles' home with a blade at the ready.

As things stand, Giles could escape death through plenty of means; Buffy or Willow could save him, or Morgan's conscience could gnaw at her enough that she spares him. But there's also the chance that Morgan's mission will drive her to kill Giles before he can get in their way any further. This would remove one of the stabilizing forces within the Scoobies, further setting them against each other. It would also likely put Robin and Wesley next on the chopping block, as they would suddenly become the primary Watchers for the trio of young women who protect Sunnydale. It wouldn't be the first version of Giles who died, but would come much sooner and be potentially far more devastating as a result. The Scoobies still need Giles to stay together, but they may have to adapt to his loss a lot sooner than any of them were expecting.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Anya Just Unleashed One of Most Powerful Big Bads Ever

Anya's machinations in Buffy the Vampire Slayer released one of the most powerful Big Bads from the original series, and they may destroy the world.

BY BRANDON ZACHARY
PUBLISHED 6 HOURS AGO

Spoiler:

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #23 by Jeremy Lambert, Ramon Bachs, Raul Angulo & Ed Dukeshire, on sale now

The "Big Bad" in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a term that referred to the ultimate enemy of each season of the series, each with their own dark intentions and plans for the world. But one of them, Dark Willow, came dangerously close to destroying the world, despite spending most of the rest of the series as a hero. Now, this dark reflection of a Scooby has come to the modern-reboot, and the key to defeating her might already be lost.

The current Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics just unleashed their version of Dark Willow without a heroic Xander to bring her back from the brink, and it's all Anya's fault.

Spoiler:

The current version of Willow Rosenberg has been through a lot recently, losing her best friend Xander, breaking up with her girlfriend Rose, and finding herself increasingly drawn into the magical side of the world. Even her most recent encounters with the scheming Anya -- which resulted in her gaining a relic that allowed her to explore the world in a ghost-like form -- has a secondary effect Willow didn't see coming. While trying to remove the amulet, dark magic spreads further through her, leading to dark cracks appearing across her skin. In giving her the amulet, Anya has "released the floodgates" of the young woman's true potential, before she was fully ready to control it all. Willow is transformed into a new form with a crueler personality, with dark hair and black eyes, the hallmarks of Dark Willow.

Dark Willow was one of the biggest twists in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Willow spent seasons of the original series learning about magic and perfecting spell-crafting in her own right. But by Season 6, her ambitions and appetite for magic had grown to a dangerous level. When her girlfriend Tara was murdered in front of her by a wayward bullet meant for Buffy, Willow embraced the full dark powers at her disposal and became Dark Willow. She promptly murdered Warren -- the villain who'd killed Tara -- and set about bringing the end of the world so she could escape her own pain and "spare" the rest of the world the torment she'd been through. She fought her way through a magically-empowered Giles and almost ended all life until Xander stepped in, who talked her back from the edge.

Spoiler:

Dark Willow remained a possible dark future for Willow throughout the subsequent Buffy comics, but this new incarnation appears to be a slightly different take on the character. Although she doesn't appear as powerful as the original Dark Willow, the true Willow appears trapped within her own mind, but this version of the character won't be calmed by Xander, who has been turned into a villain himself by embracing his status as a vampire. Dark Willow and Xander even come to blows, recognizing that neither of them is truly the friend they were before. In the chaos, Xander even ends up alongside Buffy Summers, who arrives on the scene to try and save Willow. But Dark Willow could end up becoming far more powerful, with it being implied that she's even capable of draining the mystical powers of others, as she does to some of Xander's followers.

This could end up bringing her closer to the power levels she reached in the original series, which made her a potential world-ender. Willow has been hinted to have the potential to reach that power in the new universe, but it's still frightening to see a particularly brutal version of Willow arrive in the storyline so early. Coupled with the other threats that have already emerged across Sunnydale, this could end up causing some more serious conflict for Buffy and her friends going forward, especially if they're forced to fight against her and Xander at the same time. She even may have done serious damage to Xander with a powerful blast. It also continues to paint Anya and her mysterious mission for the future of this universe in a more sinister light. If Anya has already unleashed Dark Willow, there's no telling what else Anya is planning.

Does Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25 Hold The Key To The Foil Multiverse?

Posted on March 31, 2021 | by Rich Johnston

Last month, Boom Studios announced Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25, out in May, and claimed that everything you knew about the Chosen One is wrong. Okay, that latter bit was our reading in between the lines. The publisher did promise the anniversary issue would "kick off the biggest Buffy story of the century" however.

We've received relatively little information since the original solicitation was released, despite its early FOC date rapidly approaching this coming Monday, April 5th. Which begs us to ask the question – what does Boom have planned?

Since taking over the franchise in 2019, the publisher, along with writers Jordie Bellaire and Jeremy Lambert, Coom Studios have offered up what might be best described as a remix of the original television series. Or perhaps reimagined it like Marvel did with Ultimate Spider-Man, which has also been a successful formula for Boom with their Power Rangers franchise.

Aside from the obvious change of setting the series in modern times rather than the 1990s, the series has also zigged where the television series zagged. For example, original Scooby Gang member, Xander Harris was turned into a vampire early in the series, but saved from complete damnation by his best friend Willow who gave her half her soul. The series also already has not one, not two, but three Slayers – Buffy, Kendra, and Faith – thanks to the first two Slayers entering the Hellmouth to prevent armageddon. Other characters like Anyanka, Robin Wood, and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce who didn't appear in the television series until middle or later seasons have been active much earlier in this comic remix. And that's just scratching the surface of the changes to Buffy continuity.

So what is "the biggest Buffy story of the century"?

The first signs may have emerged in issue #23, released earlier this month, where Willow's activation of a mysterious, mystical gem given to her by Anya appears to have transformed her… or perhaps replaced her with Dark Willow. This Dark Willow seems to know, and resent, a different Buffy. What does it mean for the Boom comic series? I'm hearing that issue #24, out next Wednesday, April 7th, pulls back the curtain in a big way and results in the death of a key character. My prediction is it finally pays off on the "Buffyverse" and "Multiverse" we've been hearing about since last year. The problem is the issue won't be released until after retailers have to place orders for Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25.

It comes down to the full foil cover by hot cover artist Frany, which requires a longer production time leaving Boom with the choice to FOC earlier than normal, set the print run without final orders, or ship the foil cover later than the regular covers. It's an imperfect solution, but well worth it, as Boom has been riding their foil cover program to great success of late. Their Local Comic Shop Day reprint of Something Is Killing the Children #1, which outsold the first printing, is still fetching $20 on the aftermarket. Meanwhile, BRZRKR #1 first print foils go for over cover price despite having over 134,000 copies in the channel. But the hottest foil right now is BRZRKR #1 second print, which has hit the $100 aftermarket threshold. Which does make one wonder how the three foil covers they have slated for Ram V and Filipe Andrades' The Many Deaths of Laila Starr will do…

So it's no wonder Boom is putting a foil on Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25. But in so doing, they have to FOC the series 2 weeks early — before the events of issue #24 hit comic shops, shaking up the status quo, and before retailers have a chance to read the issue so they can really understand how much the storyline events will increase reader interest or gauge how collectors will disrupt sales chasing this latest Boom foil cover.

Will retailers order up for the anniversary issue based on Boom's solicitation promises? Or will they treat it simply like the next issue of a long-running series? And if so, will they be caught short when the truth behind the Boom series is revealed? Well, don't say we didn't warn you. Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25 FOCs this coming Monday, April 5th.
