I loved the portrayal of Jessica's mother. Fierce and messed up and complicated. A monster, but also a person. A really good example of a quality female character. She was much more real than most screen female characters, as is Jessica.

well to me Alisa was a really uninteresting character because I didn't felt that love for Jessica, sure she loved her, but it was obvious that Karl was her priority, and that made it hard for me to care about her. To me in the end (apart from that part in the ferris wheels) her actions were more selfish based on a wish of not being alone by herself now that Karl had died, so she wanted Jessica by her side

I didn't see it that way at all. Her feeling for Jessica was clear since as far back in her story as when she was being treated and she'd wake and be desperately wondering how Jessica was. She clearly had strong feeling for Jessica. That's why Jessica could calm her in a way that even Karl couldn't. That showed that her connection with Jessica was stronger than her connection with Karl. And Janet McTeer did a splendid job with the role. She brought out Alisa's force of personality and rage splendidly, as well as capturing her peculiarities of personality and her more tender aspects. With McTeer playing the role, you got this feeling that Alisa really was this formidable person, in a way many actors couldn't have done. She was a fitting mother for somebody as formidable and complicated as Jessica. When I contrast her with many screen mothers, such as Buffy's awful mother, you can really see how mothers have been poorly served onscreen and how well this show did it.

that's fair enough guess we'll just agree to disagree, we can't all share the same point of view and that's what makes things interesting

I got the impression that, much like Jess, Alisa had a hard time showing and admitting that she cares about others. it makes you vulnerable in one hand, and Jess has had some trouble with that. it's easier and safer to act distant. I liked that bit about their connection because it showed that they are indeed family and they have things in common

They certainly have a lot in common.

Characters can be redeemed if written the right way both before and after but I think Trish is a lost cause.
Who decided to botch the character that hard? Geesh. __________________
