Summer Break Season 1 Discussion: Episodes 105 Deer God & 106 The Doctor Is In

Ken.. Go ahead and add the episode descriptions.

I will come back with more comments on the episodes, but I wanted to mention that I am a huge fan of Michael Green and Vanessa Taylor. The Ephram/Amy relationship, as everyone knows, is very important to me, and I think that along with Berlanti, Green and Taylor knew exactly how to write this couple. These episodes were perfect examples of how much I loved these two as writers. That piano scene in The Doctor Is In, shows me how Taylor just "gets" Ephram/Amy. Now that J&B is no longer, I hope that Taylor comes back to Everwood. Her absence has been surely missed, that's for sure.

Heh.

Still seems weird that we are going to be watching the episodes on Thursday's. I like the move, for a couple of reasons, but Monday's are going to seem so weird without Everwood, nevertheless.

I know what you mean. When I think of Monday, I automatically think 'Everwood'. To me, Thurs nights still come up as 'Friends' HAHA.

Yes I'm weird.

Me too! I miss Friends so much on Thursday's. I really do. I guess I just miss Friends, period. But yes, Thursday nights have been depressing without my Friends fix. Then again, my DVDs are always getting a workout but still, something is certainly missing every Thursday evening, that's for sure.

After a lost deer makes the Browns' backyard its new home, Andy (Treat Williams) insists on accompanying Ephram (Gregory Smith) who decides to help the animal find its way home to the wilderness. Meanwhile, Ephram finally admits to Amy (Emily VanCamp) that he never asked his father to consider operating on her boyfriend, Colin, who is in a coma; and Delia (Vivien Cardone) questions the existence of God.

#106 - "The Doctor Is In" (Original Airdate: 10/21/02)
Amy (Emily VanCamp) is heartbroken and Ephram (Gregory Smith) is furious when Andy (Treat Williams) decides against performing a risky operation on Amy's comatose boyfriend. Meanwhile, Delia (Vivien Cardone) is forbidden from playing with her only friend, Magilla (guest star Bret Loehr), after his parents discover them playing dress up; and a traveling psychologist, Dr. Trott (Jane Krakowski), creates quite a stir in the Everwood community.

Eh...I made "The O.C." my Must-See-TV for Thursday nights...but it does feel weird that "Friends" isn't on, anymore. I think when I stopped watching "Joey" it sunk in that the show was over...and it was time to move on.

Thanks for the summaries, Ken!

One of my favorite episodes is, in fact, Deer God. Everything about that episode, I think, was beautifully written and well done. I love the beginning, when Andy discovers it's a deer in the house and says to Ephram, "Stand back. He might have a gun." Too funny. And, dont ask why, but I thought the sight of Ephram holding Delia was soooo cute and made him look all the more hotter. What is it with hot guys holding babies or small children??? Anyhow..
I loved the line where Ephram says, "She keeps looking at me funny. Like she's thinking she doesn't know where she is" and in response, Andy says, "She's a wild animal. She's thinking 'hi. Are you made of food?'". Absolutely loved that line! I loved the other storyline going on in this episode; Delia's mission to find proof of god. I thgouht it was very well done and once again, little Vivien did phenominal. I love her and Edna's friendship!
I cannot put into words how moving and amazing Ephram/Greg's breakdown was towards the end of this episode, when they discover the reserve isn't any good. So amazing. I dont know if any of you saw the commentary for 'The Unveiling' but in that commentary, Greg and Treat talk about this episode, and how the Deer would literally drag Greg around betwen takes and during that emotional scene, how they had a deer 'tamer' (sp?) talking to the deer, while Greg got ready to do this emotional scene. I just can't get the idea of the deer dragging Greg around out of my head. Must have been very funny!

I absolutely love this scene between Ephram and Andy:

Quote:
[Cut to the woods at night. Ephram is trying to light a fire.]

DR. BROWN: You know, if you shield it from the wind...

EPHRAM: Don't! You are forbidden from dispensing advice on anything, ever! You're fired!

[He manages to light it and puts it into the stack of wood but it quickly goes out.]

DR. BROWN: If you just put a piece of...

EPHRAM: ...Fired!

DR. BROWN: Fine. You drive.

EPHRAM: Come on. Come on.

[This match lights but goes out just as quick.]

EPHRAM: AH!

[Ephram gives up, exhausted, then remembers the flare gun. He reaches for it and shoots it straight at the fire. The procedure works. Ephram looks pleased with himself.]

DR. BROWN: That's one way of doing it.
I love the end, when Ephram goes to Amy and tells her he lied, but has made up for it. This may sopund weird, but I was very proud of Ephram; putting Amy and her feelings for Colin before his own feelings for her. So proud!

Okay, well I can go on and on about this episode here. I'll move onto the next one..

The other episode, 'The Doctor Is In' was alright. Wasn't the best ever. I thgouht the idea of a traveling psycologist was pretty neat. I'm glad that Andy decided to meet with her, and talk. And I'm glad it helped him decide on what to do about Colin. I think it's too bad that Delia wasn't allowed to play with Magilla anymore because he liked to play 'girl' things. My little brother, who is 11, will sometimes play barbies with my 5 yr old niece because she begs him to. Is that wrong? Parents, I tell ya! lol!

Thanks for the summaries. Vivien did one awesome job with "Deer God" .. this episode has a quote I still use today.. "Coincidences are God's way of preserving physics" ... I also loved this episode because Amy said "Oh, Dad, you have such a boy-crush on him." Meaning Dr. Brown. This is just around the time I got into slashing so I latched onto that line like a hawk. Hee.

"The Doctor Is In" was also a good episode. I was sad when Magilla went away. He was Delia's first friend in Everwood and I liked their friendship. Also for the Greenie in me that still was apparent, I loved that Ephram wrote a song for Amy. I know I read somewhere what it was called. Someone had said if you go in slo-mo, you can read the title. It's C'est something. In French. Can anyone remember?

Deer God:

Outstanding episode. Michael Green certainly got this one right. Then again, he hardly ever misses. I loved the E/A flirty banter. How adorable was that whenever she called him "ham?" Too cute. Good Lord, I adore this pairing. Scorching chemistry. I enjoyed the Harold/Amy scenes. I loved whenever Amy tells Harold that he has a boy-crush on Andy. Priceless. Edna/Delia's interaction was so sweet. I loved how in Edna, Delia was growing close with a Grandmother-type. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this relationship. I have always been saddened by the lack of Edna/Delia, especially in season 3. They really built a solid foundation for a relationship between these two in season 1, but never took advantage of it later on in the series. The storyline involving Andy/Ephram was powerful stuff. You could sense the strain in their relationship in every way possible. And Ephram's breakdown was absolutely heartbreaking. Greg Smith acted the hell out of that scene. Wow, was he amazing. I could feel every emotion that was running through Ephram. And the last scene with Ephram/Amy was beautiful. Ephram, pouring his heart out for Amy to see was fabulous. Amy going from flirting/teasing him to being entirely serious, as you could see her think about Colin but then start to immediately shift and think about Ephram, with what he was saying to her, and how she was realizing that she cares very deeply about this purple-haired boy that just adores her. Emily was all about pure brilliance. Then again, what else is new? I still cannot get over how great we have it with Greg/Emily on this show. The talent they have is unreal. Whenever Amy tells Ephram "okay" and quietly shuts the door, and the music comes on, I thought that was such a lovely ending. That song was incredibly fitting to that scene and the entire episode. Great, great song and amazing ending as Ephram is walking away from the Abbott house.

The Doctor Is In:

Another brilliant episode. Honestly, Taylor is my very favorite writer, next to Berlanti. Every episode Taylor has written is perfection. She is very in tune with the vision of this show. Please Taylor, come back, now that J & B is over. We need your brilliance back on this show is a huge and desperate way.

I loved the intro to Dr. Trott. Being that my career is in psychology, I got a huge kick out of Gretchen putting Harold in his place. I loved the parallel of how Andy/Gretchen got along swimmingly, but Harold/Gretchen were like oil and water. Great stuff and so typical. While I loved the banter between Harold/Gretchen, I also loved how it was Gretchen that helped Andy with a few of his own personal internal struggles.

Ephram writing that song for Amy throughout the episode was absolutely adorable. I love how he was hiding it from her the entire episode until the end, but it seemed as if Amy knew he was up to something and then just sort of let him go about his business until she finally made him fess up during the incredible piano scene, which I'll get back to. I will never get over the chemistry that is blazing between Greg/Emily as E/A. Just their screen-presence together is moving.

The Delia/Mag. storyline was very intriguing. Only this amazing show would dig into a storyline like this and hit a homerun with it. I loved this storyline so much. I cried whenever these two friends had to say good-bye to each other. Amazing scene and storyline.

The breakdown that Amy has at her ballet recital was so emotional and heartbreaking. What more can I say about Emily? She is so insanely talented.

Back to the piano scene between E/A. This is one of my favorite scenes of all time between them. Amy walking down to where Ephram is playing and asks him what he is playing. You can feel how strong their dynamic is because I am convinced that Amy knew Ephram was creating something for her. It's just one of those subtle instances where you immediately pick up on how they just "get" each other. Beautiful. Amy slides over and sits closely on the bench, next to Ephram.. She looks so pretty in that scene, I have to say. She always looks pretty, though.. Then she tells him the story of Colin but notice how she INSTANTLY goes back to asking Ephram what he is playing.. How I viewed this scene is Taylor's brilliant way of showing that Amy is instantly going back and forth between Colin and Ephram like a seesaw, in that she is understanding how strongly she is starting to feel for Ephram.. How she knows that now, she has TWO guys in her life that she deeply, deeply cares about. Like Amy is now very confused as to where Colin stops and where Ephram starts if that makes any sense. Thus, Taylor was trying to drill this point home in a very intense but ever so subtle way. It worked like a charm.. Oh man, what a brilliant moment. After Amy asks Ephram again about what he was playing (like I said, I know she knew it was for her in a connected, special kind of way) and Ephram gorgeously starts explaining to Amy how he wrote a song for her and Amy looks right at him as they exchange the intense and powerful eye contact that they have always been known for. I literally get chills while watching Amy pick up his sheet music and get it all set up for him to play, followed by more intense eye contact.. Then Ephram starts to play the beautiful music, as Amy sits closely to him and then she personally looks up at him, and you just know that what is running through her mind is how much she deeply cares for this adorable guy. Oh man, incredible stuff. This scene, literally, is a perfect example of why I am so moved by this pairing. They have the whole package.

Two more great episodes.

Okay, I found the name of Amy's song (see my last post). It's "Ceci n'est pas un bouquet" or "This is not a bouquet." Much thanks to EverwoodMusic.com on this.
