Summer Break Episode Discussion: 123 Home (Season 1 Finale)

Quote:

#123 - "Home" (Original Airdate: 05/19/03)
As the day of Colin's (Mike Erwin) surgery approaches and emotions run high, Andy (Treat Williams) takes Ephram (Gregory Smith) and Delia (Vivien Cardone) on a road trip to his old medical school to consult with his mentor, Dr. Donald Douglas (guest star Philip Baker Hall). Back in Everwood, Colin kidnaps Amy (Emily VanCamp) and Bright (Chris Pratt) in the middle of the night to surprise them with a special day of memories and hopes for the future.

I wasn't sure if you wanted to add "The Last of Summer" or if you wanted to continue this. So ... I'll leave that up to you.

Maybe we can just focus on the outstanding finale this week and then decide what to do for next week? Next week, we might be better off posting whatever rerun will be shown, given that we are so close to season 4 starting, or, we could start the season 2 episodes, stop whenever season 4 starts, and continue on with the season 2 episodes during hiatus time this season? Something to think about..

So yeah, the season finale of 1 was so fantastic, I think it's only fitting for it to have center stage this week.

I hope numerous people contribute to the discussion this week.. This episode deserves it.

Thanks, Ken, for starting the thread. Topping now.

This seriously was a masterpiece. I loved how the beginning of the episode tied up everything from the entire season into an elegant voice-over. And as for acting performances, I have to say ... Michael Erwin did a fantastic job, as well as the entire cast. I like how he comes to the office and asks Andy, if he can promise him anything, and Andy says "no". That was just hardcore. You knew it wasn't going to end well. But, even that scene where Andy finally tells Ephram why they moved to Everwood, and E/A with the "Twix" was nice. Overall, it was a masterpiece that tied the entire season together, and made it magnificent.

For me what I really liked about the episode was seeing why Andy wanted to move to Everwood. I found it really touching hearing Julia speak of Everwood and for Andy to leave everything to bring his children to where his late wife had once been, was very special.

This episode was a masterpiece, as Ken said.

A few thoughts for now..

Whenever Ephram found out about why they moved to Everwood, my heart almost exploded with emotion. That was one incredible moment.

The scene, whenever Colin is prepping for surgery, as his mother is shaving his head, Amy's grabbing her grover doll, Andy is scrubbing, oh man, I thought my heart was going to jump right out of my chest. Add in the song, Cathedrals, and it was enough to make me flushed with emotion.

The moment whenever Colin is just ready to go under as he is counting.. intense.

The baseball field scene is absolutely breathtaking. There are no words for how brilliant Emily was in that scene.. She could bring out Amy's emotions at the drop of a hat. To see Amy's face turn into complete agony, as she picked up on how Colin was trying to experience some moments before his surgery in case he didn't make it, was so incredibly moving.

The Twix scene.. Damn. Perfect.

This season finale tied up the entire season in such a beautiful way, I have honestly NEVER seen a better episode of TV..

Flawless.

I would love to see "Everwood" attempt to tie an entire season together like that, once again. It didn't do that so much with 2x22 & 3x22.

I love how as Colin shoots the Bball, it lands on Andy's desk. Nicely edited.

I love that basketball shot as well.

Oh yes, the season 2/3 finales weren't even close to tying up their seasons..

The season 2 finale was certainly better than the season 3 finale, but, both finales could never come close to the season 1 finale.

I have a feeling they will never strike it rich again with an episode like "Home."

Eh, I still enjoyed both finales. They just didn't do a good job of wrapping up a season-long story arch.

I strongly dislike the season 3 finale after watching it a few times and really digesting the fluff we were getting. The bear? Good Lord. Over on another site I frequent, it's hard pressed to find anyone that remotely liked the season 3 finale. I very much enjoyed the season 2 finale. I really don't care to ever watch the season 3 finale again.

No, your right. The S3 finale was pretty bad! They should have left 3x21 as the finale. It would have been perfect.

Absolutely, Ken. That episode was the finale in my mind. It was a brilliant episode. Why they didn't stop while they were ahead, I have no clue.

The audio commentary is good stuff.

I can never watch this episode without a box of kleenex handy. There's just no way. This episode tugs at my heart. Everything about it.

One scene that I always lose it during is the scene with Colin and his dad. Oh man, that is tough to sit through. I almost feel like on some level, they both have a understanding that this would be the last father/son moment they would share together.

I cry every, single time I watch that.

I like how he finally tells Amy he loves her ... when there is a risk he's going to die. I found that amusing.
