I guess we're not that good!

Our best player- Abby Wambach broke her leg and I guess the team does not play as well without her.
You'd think such a good team would have more depth. LOL

What happened with the basketball team? I haven't heard.
We didn't even qualify. Ooph. Although we've only qualified once since 1988 apparently. Whee.

Yea, I can just picture you with a broom! LOL
I should like it more. A game created by Scots and huge in Canada, but I find it just as boring to watch as most of the world. Heh.

I prefer the winter olympics as well. In addition to ice hockey, the sports are so beautiful.....figure skating, skiing.
There's something about the snow and the ice, it all looks really gorgeous. I can't wait for 2010 for the Olympics right here. That's going to be really cool. Although we really don't get all that much snow, so I'm not sure what they've got planned for that one. And the tickets look to be expennnsive, but I'd like to go see something, anyway. They only come once, so might as well enjoy it.

Did the fans like him there?
Yeah, as a player they did. Personally, pretty much indifferent to borderline amusing since he really didn't get into any major trouble but everyone knew he was enjoying the Cleveland nightlife, lets put it that way.

Quote:

There's still talk about him going to the Vikes, Mitch.
The talk everywhere was that Favre wanted to go to the Vikes but the Packers refused to trade him to their rival and were blunt without even room to discuss this past a "it's not happening" situation. Some think he wanted the Vikings because of Peterson being in the backfield, the Vikings defense being upgraded to one of the best in the league and with him at QB it would have been a pretty situation since that's the only position the Vikings are lacking in. I'm sure Brett would have loved to have given the middle finger to the Pack as well should he have been traded to the Vikings.

Now we see he was traded to the Jets. Interesting. Some are claiming Brett was always doing this not even to play, but for the money because he is collecting on all of the endorsements in NYC now and an inside source reported this morning that he rejected the Packers 20 million offer to stay retired because he wanted the entire 30 million that was left on his contract and had he gotten that, he would have taken the 30 million and gone back to Mississippi satisfied, and well, um greedy.

I'm a diehard Vikings fan but I feel for the Packer fans right now. I've already talked to many around here. They feel stung and their previous good thoughts about #4 have changed drastically. I don't blame them.

Gotcha about Manny.

And yeah, Favre. *sigh* A lot of Pack fans are livid, for sure. One of my friends ripped down every poster he has of him in his family room that used to be a Brett Favre shrine.

Here's what I think... whenever Favre didn't get to play for the Vikings, which was his first choice he realized going to NY/NJ would get him to at least collect some serious green. That's what I think, and I think it sucks. I think he wanted to PLAY in Minnesota, now it's about just getting back at the Packers and collecting more money. He even said he's from the country, he likes more low key places aka Minnesota.

Check this bit:

Credit AOL

Quote:
The Green Bay Packers reached an agreement Wednesday night to trade their three-time MVP and Super Bowl-winning quarterback to the New York Jets, ending an emotionally grinding month of indecision over Favre's future.
The move ends a remarkably ugly split between Green Bay and one of its most beloved players, allows the Packers to move forward with new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers and gives Favre a fresh start - although not exactly the one he wanted, as Favre's first choice was widely believed to be the Minnesota Vikings.
He wanted the Minnesota Vikings and badly, when he couldn't get the Vikes his interest switched big time... right to money.

I think that Minnesota would have had to be his first choice. No other team in the league is as close to being one player away from the Super Bowl as they are. With one of the best defenses in the league, one of the top two backs in the league, and a corps of decent recievers already in place, Favre would have put them over the top and made them one of the teams to beat.

Of course, since that was obviously never going to happen, I think that NY would have to be the obvious second choice, if playing at a high level is actually his goal. The recievers on the Jets are definitely superior to those in Tampa Bay, and personally I think the line is better too. They have some good young players on defense too, so overall I think the Jets give Favre a better chance to play on a winner than Tampa Bay does, even if they do play the Patriots twice a year.

I think if it was solely about the money then he would have taken the offer from Green Bay. It has been pretty obvious from the first that Green Bay wasn't going to allow him to go to Minnesota, so he had to know that he wasn't going there in advance of reporting for camp. Sure there was 30 million left on his contract which is more than 20 million, but the man spends his offseason riding his tractor all over his Mississippi farm. Is the extra 10 million really that important to him?

I don't know where you're at, so won't spoil it, but will say the lighting of the torch is something to see. Amazing stuff.

I haven't seen it all, it's a frickin' four hour epic. My Dad was up watching it live from 4am until 8am today. I'm going to watch the very beginning in a few minutes because I haven't seen that yet.

The athletes coming in, 204 countries, that's a bit long. You can go for a break during a lot of that. Heh. I was surprised how big of a reaction Canada got, and why they were playing "Scotland the Brave" when the athletes started coming out (very weird choice, but awesome). Bush getting a mixed reaction, Putin looking very nervous because of what's going on in Georgia right now, and the Chinese President were very interesting. And when the Chinese athletes come out, holy moley, that's a crowd!

So many countries! I know that my knowledge of Geography is not the best......but was it me?.........weren't there a lot of nations participating that you've never heard of?

That was a team that never ended!!!

Did you hear the story about that adorable little boy that marched in with Yao Ming?
He was one of the students in that school that was severely damaged during the earthquake. Most of his fellow students died. He was able to free himself. He then went back and rescued 2 of his classmates.
When asked why he did that, he replied, "I am a class leader and hall monitor. That is my job." Isn't that precious!?

That ceremony is a hard act to follow. Vancouver and later, London will have their work cut out for them!

ETA: This is petty, but I must ask. Did anyone notice the outfit that the Hungarian female athletes were wearing? If so....what did you think of it?

Oh yes! I thought I had seen it all from the drumming, then the blocks, or the planet out from the screen, and everything really, but that was great. I thought it was a nice contrast, from how everything before was one mass where the individual was rare, to that moment of one guy doing that. The slow-motion effect of it was really awesome too. That was the highlight of the the whole thing for me, even with all the amazing show of synchronization and mass performances that went on before.

Hehe, definitely. Some very obscure countries.

Awwwww. That's ssooo great!

Absolutely. Although there is the element that China is one of the only countries that CAN do what they did on this scale. These next countries have to worry about limits on finances and checks on how much they spend; it's taxes, they will have to be accountable with what they do with that money. China isn't. I don't want to discount the beauty and the awe that this obviously was by any means, but there's an element of power there too that a democracy won't be able to match. Think of them basically building this stadium not to have a stadium, but essentially for the opening ceremonies.

Not to mention the question of how much of this work was by pure volunteers, which a lot of it will have to be for most countries, or those told to volunteer. Again, it was amazing and probably done on the biggest scale ever, but there's an aspect of it that China could do this because they don't have to worry about some of the things other countries will have to. Doesn't take away from what they did by any means, but just something that was in my mind a bit.

If you find a pic, post it, because I didn't notice anything.

I think that I'd rather have the democracy as opposed to a spectacular opening ceremony!!

Well, the US commentator said that the stadium is going to be used for soccer after the olympics.

Believe me....you couldn't have seen the Hungarian team walk in because if you did, you couldn't have helped but notice!!

Right. Still, a lot of it, like the screen wrapping around the indoors, or the huge LSD thing on the floor seemed to have been built just for the ceremonies. Although, they sure made great use of both!

Hehe, now I'm VERY interested. I did not see them, for sure. I read that there was a funny exchange from Costas and the other guy about them, though.

Anyone watch any of the events today? I watched a bit of the women's volleyball, Japan vs America. What can I say, that's a fun sport to watch? Hehe, but I also watched Latvia vs America for the men's, and wow, that was an upset and a half! Annd, Michael Phelps winning his first of hopeful eight gold medals was nice; he crushed his old record and the rest of the opponents. Won by a full body between him and second, it looked like. Umm, watched a bit of Canada tieing China in women's soccer.

Canada has yet to win a medal so far, which is disappointing. We're not the best in the Summer Games, but we do send a large team, so, yeah, hopefully the athletes have something to show for it because they work so hard for it.

The other guy was Matt Lauer from the Today Show. Yes, Matt asked Costas what he thought of the outfit and Costas was speechless. All he said was, "Let's just go on to the next country!"
The dresses were red and white and were just hideous.....very hard to describe....made you wonder what the designer was thinking!

Yes, I can understand why a guy would enjoy watching women play volleyball.
Those two are so terrific!

I also watched the US guys play......how disappointing. They almost appeared as if they weren't even trying.

Yes, I'm also rooting for you to win some medals. Of course I'll change my tune during the winter olympics when we play you in ice hockey (and you always kill us!) and when we compete against you in figure skating.
I'll root for you in that strange cross country ski/shooting event. We never do that well in that event and it is kind of a strange event!

Tomorrow, I'm looking forward to watching U.S. basketball team play China...should be exciting.

Olympics

Soccer: I just finished watching the U.S. team blow a 2-1 lead (and a major upset) against the Netherlands in the 92nd minute.(on a stupid penalty)....aaargh!
Now we are playing our final group match against Nigeria without Adu and Bradley (2 yellow cards).
By the way, Matty, the first Dutch goal was by a player named Babble (of Liverpool)

Basketball: Final score 101-70 (USA)
It was not our best game....outside & foul shooting were off.....but we sure know how to drive the ball into the net! lol. China kept it close in the first quarter.....made it exciting for the fans.
Yao Ming was very moving....so emotional about his country. I really wished that China would have kept it closer for a little longer, just for his sake!
Two other players on Team China have been signed by the NBA.....one for the LA Lakers and the other for the NJ Nets. I believe that the Nets have also signed a Spanish player. Having a New Chinese and Spanish player should (hopefully) increase the Net's fanbase.
LeBron James was super.....great blocking.

ETA: Between soccer and basketball.....they showed some women's weight lifting. A woman from Thailand (she didn't look that huge to me) broke the record by picking up over 270 lbs (I believe)....over 125 kilos.
Wow! Any guy that she dates better watch out or she'll put him in his place.....and I mean literally!!! lol

Check out pictures # 15 (weight lifter) and (#22 (LeBron James/Ming)

You must be talking about the 4 by 100 meter swimming relay race.
Yes, that was amazing!! Maybe the French team should not have predicted that they were going to smash us......probably back-fired and stirred up the U.S. team even more.
