Sports #18: Football, Soccer, Basketball, Hockey... sports talk 24/7

Here we go.

I bet a video will be up shortly. What are the articles saying about it, Betty? I have to side with the announcers, I think, if forced to have an opinion. But I am not 100% sure.

ETA: I just thought of something... we could take out "World Series" in the title since that is in the past now with the Yanks winning it. If you want to remove that, awesome. Oh and maybe add in basketball instead?

I was thinking the exact same thing!

Thanks for the new thread, Michelle!

I watched a little bit of the hockey hall of fame inductions. Key two words being "a little", hee. I like the guys, especially Stevie Y, but it's all a little too stuffy for my tastes. Needs more fighting.

Yeah, see, I wanted to be nice and diplomatic but now that the articles are showing it seemed to be acting and a dive, yes, I do agree so my "not sure" went to a full 100% now but I just don't want Matty getting mad at me.

I can't wait for you to see it, Betty. The weird thing is the ref that called it was standing RIGHT outside of the BOX front and center, he had a clear view of it but still fell for the dive and acting! People are ripping the player for diving (this is exactly what I don't like about the game LOL) yet I also blame the ref. You HAVE to get that call right.

Hee, thanks for changing it, mod.

Regarding the Hall of Fame... yes, it is a cheese-fest. The lack of drama makes it a sleeping pill! Lol.

Do you know why Liverpool was so upset with a tie? Were they favored by that much?
Because Liverpool is a top team that should be up among the leaders of the league. This has not been the case thus far this season....they are struggling with injuries and have not won as many games as they should. The more points you have at the end of the season....the higher your position in the league. A win gives you 3 points and a tie only gives you 1 point. So, if Liverpool is to make a move to rise in the league standings...they need to win rather than tie.

Yeah, exactly. I'm so confused with the leagues of European football/soccer. The only lack of confusion I have is watching and understanding the game, that I can nail 100%. Lol. It's the standings and all of that.

In my mind they are actually LUCKY to have gotten a tie! They dominated the match for the most part but the goals they gave up were unacceptable.

I need to look up what teams they are battling it out in their division. My mind feels so messed up with these leagues and if I am going to start seriously watching it from now on I better get this straight or my Capricorn head will simply explode.

Thanks, Betty!

Why does there seem to be a "cut off" after 5 Aston Villa? Is that the last team that would be in the playoffs?

I found a very good article that summarizes the match... I can't wait for the play to show up on video so you can see it!

They don't have playoffs. I believe that the top 4 teams earn the right to also play in the Champions League which is made up of top teams from different countries.
I think the next place (5th) is eligible to play in the European League which is a notch below the Champions League. If you end up as one of the botton three teams...you are relegated to a lower league the following season and then you have to work your way up again.
I'd say the place to end up is the top 4.

How does the Champions League work?

Definitely!

Wow, this is quite confusing, hee.

What teams do you support again, Betty?

Champions League:

Matches

UEFA Champions League comprises of three qualifying rounds, a play-off round, a group stage and four knockout rounds.

Qualifying
In matches in the three qualifying rounds and the play-off stage, clubs play two matches against each other on a home and away basis, with the club scoring the greater aggregate of goals qualifying for the next round. In the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more goals away qualifies.

Group stage
The ten winners in the play-off round ties – five from the best-placed path and five from the champions path – join 22 automatic entrants in the 32-team group stage. The clubs are split into eight groups of four teams, who play home and away against each of their pool opponents between September and December to decide which two teams from each pool advance to the first knockout round. The third-place finishers in each pool enter the UEFA Cup Round of 32.

Knockout phase
From the last 16 until the semi-finals, clubs play two matches against each other on a home and away basis with the same rules as the qualifying and play-off rounds applied. In the last 16, group winners play runners-up other than teams from their own pool or nation, while from the quarter-finals on the draw is free.

Final
The final is decided by a single match - which this season will be played in Madrid.

Thanks for all the info! I will read and study, heh.

Also, I bring you about a 5 mn and change video of the match today. You will see the dive.

Liverpool vs. Birmingham City Video Highlights & Interviews (09th Nov 09)

What do you think?

ETA: Scratch that, this video is messed up. It keeps pausing and I don't see the dive after seeing it one time. It keeps freezing. Maybe you'll have better luck and see it? If not, I'll search for another video.

READ MORE NEWS ON: Birmingham City, Liverpool, Rafa Benitez

Liverpool striker David Ngog admits they didn't deserve the penalty won in last night's draw with Birmingham City.

The Reds were awarded a penalty when the French forward went to ground in the area with seemingly little or no contact from Lee Carsley who was nearby at the time.

"Maybe it wasn't a penalty but we deserved to score more goals," Reds boss Rafa Benitez said afterwards.

"We have had a lot of situations against us this year - and now one for us in a game where we played well and deserved more.

"I was asking David afterwards and he said maybe it wasn't a penalty."

Yes, me too, after the first try.

Maybe it's receiving so many hits it's not working? Sucks. I will keep searching. For sure by morning something has to be up!
