Rank the Seasons

Okay, now that the show has ended, I'm wondering what season the vast majority of people consider to be their favorite season, least favorite season. So going from favorite all the way down to your least favorite, take a stab at ranking the seasons.. You can list reasons as to why you choose the order that you do or you can just bypass that and list your ranking. Either way is just fine. I'll come back with my list in a bit. :)

jediwands 07-20-2006 07:00 AM

Okay I figure I should lead by example so I'll put up my ranking:

* Season 1

Groundbreaking TV. The best of the series and the best season of TV I've ever seen.

* Season 4

While I disliked the lack of EA from time to time, there were truly some of the best epsiodes of the entire series scattered throughout this season. And the Series Finale was the best Series Finale, EVER.

* Season 3

I loved seeing the EA romantic relationship.

* Season 2

Amy's depression storyline and EVCs brilliant portrayal of it was Emmy worthy. There was excellent writing in this season as well but for me, I put it last only because of the severe lack of EA as well as it not being a secret that I disliked the EM relationship. Every aspect of it in fact.

AngelaiDanes 07-20-2006 07:06 AM

Season 1

I just have never seen better writing, acting, or chemistry on a tv show. :)

Season 3

Mostly because of the Ephram/Amy romantic relationship finally being explored. :in_love:

Season 4

I loved how Ephram and Amy slowly built up the trust and friendship again while realizing they were never going to be just friends (them sleeping together and Amy admitting he is her person). And then of course it all leading to the finale where Amy realized she wanted him again for good, that was incredibly wonderful. The best series finale ever. :D

Season 2

I loved Amy through all of it but Im with you Michelle the Ephram/Madison obsession/storyline makes me cringe and I hated Madison so it definitely ruined alot of season 2 for me. Its weird because I didnt mind Amy's attitude with Tommy (and to some extent Colin in season 1) because I know theyd never last, but I found EM sick and unhealthy considering the age difference, his obsession with her, and her knowing she couldnt get past the age difference and leading him on.

Exactly how I feel. So much so, I have nothing to add outside of saying this is precisely why I tolerated AC and AT but had zero, and I mean, ZERO tolerance for EM.

Amont 07-20-2006 02:22 PM

Rank the seasons.. well I haven't seen season 3 at all and also the ending of season 2. So that part is still a mystery for me.. but I guess I could participate and discuss (since I've nothing to do in my own unattended threads).
I'll just say what I think of each season.

Season 1.
The best thing about is that it's the very beginning and it's full of those magical moments we have grown to love and cherish so much. The list would be endless.
There's nothing to complain about season 1, everything is just so top-of-the-notch that you really get everything you desire.

Season 2.
One of the best things I'd pick from season 2 is the Bright/Ephram relationship. Previously they'd been quarreling and stuff, but now they're like brothers. Ephram/Madison. A definite no-no. Amy and Tommy.. a little more reasonable, but still nothing permanent, obviously. Just compare Tommy to Ephram in season 1. Hah, Tommy couldn't measure up to Ephram even in his dreams. He's just a come-and-go type of guy. Besides, a drug addict. Andy/Linda. The beginning was a bit childishly funny, but I understand their reasoning: to enjoy being happy together, not caring about her AIDS or whatever. Doesn't matter. It's just doing whatever makes you happy while you still can. And that they did. It was doomed from the start, but if I had to pick an expression to describe this relationship, I'd say it was what 'I was least against' or something like that. Linda's not a bad character. But whatever. On to season 3 now.

Season 3.
I've been too long a part of this community not to know what happens in season 3. Well, the main thing anyway. I know that Ephram/Amy are going to get together and then breakup because of Madison's child and that stuff. But I expect nothing less than magic from the beginning of season 3 when I once get there with my viewing. I know it's going to be grand and spectacular.

Season 4.

Well, what can I say. It was the first time I saw Hannah, but I know that she was already in season 3. When I get there I'll get to know her more, about her relations with other characters and her personality. But from what I saw in season 4, I liked her and the relationship she had with Bright. It was also nice to see Bright become a kind, caring young man and still maintain his absolutely wonderful sense of humour I've always liked so much. Then the long run to get back together for Ephram and Amy. Ephram's return to Everwood.. the aftermath, Amy dealing with this.. knowing that her 'one' is back, and is back because he loves her.. I loved this smooth progress towards getting back together for good, topping with the grand Ferris Wheel scene in the finale which served like a chocolate garnish on top of a really delicious vanilla ice cream. Just absolutely perfect and wonderful.
Reid was a cool character too. Unlike many, I didn't actually hate him and felt for him when he was stuck with his medschool thing and eventually when he tried to commit suicide. A cool character.
So far, I've to say that the ranking would go something like this:
season 1
season 4
season 3 [at least I can presume it's better, E/A, you know.. good stuff]
season 2

So that's what I think of this. Just now I was thinking of a way to express my disappointment in something, but I decided to spare you from all of that, so..
Gonna watch 'Unspoken Truth's now :P

Could not agree more, co-mod, with your ranking and comments! It's creepy sometimes how much we're on the same page!

Season one:

THE best full season on television history. It was magical. Not in a lame way, but it had that element of a fairy tale kind of. I loved Colin's journey from getting a new chance at life to death, I loved watching Ephram get used to Everwood, I loved Andy getting used to being a father and I just plain loved Harold. I can't say enough about this season. I watch it again and again and again and I can't stop. I need rehab for this bloody show. :)

Season four:

Oh, I'll just list the things I loved: Ephram becoming a frickin' man; I was so proud of him, how he grew and how he could forgive Andy and bond with him. Andy and Ephram's new relationship was what we were waiting for since season one and it was so well-written and amazing and probably one of my favourite things during the whole entire show. The dynamic between Andy and Eugene; seriously, that stuff was brilliant. Kyle and how Ephram helped him; I thought Steven R. McQueen grew as an actor on the show and he was one of my favourite guest stars with how his storyline did so much for Ephram. Irv's goodbye episode, the finale and how hot Amy looked. What? I can be shallow.

This is tough, since there is so much I liked and hated in season two and season three, but here's a rough rank without seeing either in too long

Season three:
I'll start with what I hate here: Amanda and Andy's storyline. Seriously, this made Andy SO unlikeable and their scenes were just a pain to watch. When you can't make a scene with Treat frickin' Williams work, you're doing something wrong. And it wasn't Anne Heche, it was just the situation and the writing. There's really only one thing I can remember hating from this season I just noticed, but it was so bad and it was for so long that it must count as, like, five things I hated.

I really really liked Hannah this season. She wasn't so great in season four, but she was funny and quirky and cute and different in season four. She was one of my favourite things about season three, but then there was Amy. Oh, this was the season that Amy really turned into one of my favourite characters. She had flashes in season one and two, but she matured and was just so likeable in season three. I mean, when she walked down those stairs for her graduation for Rose, man, I was more proud of her than any other character to that point. As much as I hated the baby storyline, I really loved the aftermath (which more has to do with season four and Ephram becoming a man, but I just wanted to mention this one scene). I just loved that scene on the rooftop where Ephram and Andy bond and it's so great, but you feel absolutely horrible, my stomach was seriously in knots, because of what was about to come. Wonderfully written in that way.

Season two:

Absolutely agreed with Amy's depression storyline. Great stuff after Colin's death. What else happened? I also liked Andy's guilt over Colin, especially in the season premiere. Liked Delia getting some things to do. I can't remember anything else vividly, but I think Harold and Rose's struggle to parent Amy was some great stuff? Hated Madison, hated Tommy. The finale almost got me to stop watching when Madison said she was pregnant.

Damn, I'm wordy tonight, but there you go. I really hope to watch season two and three again with a more open mind and an attention to really seeing the nuances in them, because I don't remember much of especially season two, so it could be completely different to what I remember.

stargirl10 07-20-2006 11:54 PM

Season 1

Seems like it's an unaminous choice! But how could you not love it!? i can watch these episodes over and over again. Love all the awesome E/A we have, love seeing ephram and andy bond over the season. There is more Edna this season which is great and also i really liked Colin and his storyline, plus his friendship with Ephram. The season finale was just brilliant. Brought everything together and left with a true cliff-hanger - lucky i got to watch season 2 straight away!

Season 2

I feel like i have to put this above 3 and 4 because i haven't seen all the eps of those seasons (missing about two from season 3 and the last eight from season 4). WHile i dislike the lack of E/A for the majority of the season, the last few episodes are E/A magic :) I also like the emergence of Ephram and Brights friendship, and i love the character of Linda. Madison - i could take her or leave her. I started to like her more towards the end when it became obvious that the relationship wasn't working; go figure! Maybe subconciously i started to like her because i knew she would soon be leaving :D And it goes without saying that the depression storyline was so realistic and perfect and well acted. Really gutsy move i think by the writers to make Amy take that pathway but so well done.

Season 4

Although i have yet to see it all, i think i prefer it already to season 3 - and thats without seeing the finale yet! The growth of ephram is heart-warming to witness.. and the gradual rekindling of the E/A relationship is fantastic. And the Ephram/Andy stuff is great. I like seeing more of Rose and Harold and a different side to Delia, she wasn't around much in season 3.

Season 3

It's hard to put this last because i did like this season - specifically because of Amy, her character was just brilliant this season. Amy's best season i think, she's just so lovable! And i like Bright becoming a character in his own right and Hannah was a good addition in the most part. But i hated Amanda and Andy; more than any other relationship that has been on the show and that ruined a lot of it for me. Plus the ever-present "baby revelation" put a bit of a downer on it; i felt like i couldn't enjoy the E/A goodness because it would soon be blown out of the water so to speak... i don't know. I find these episodes the hardest to rewatch; although sometimes i just fast-forward all the Andy stuff :)

Amont 07-21-2006 12:24 AM

ohmygod you haven't seen the season 4 finale?! :( you have to lay your eyes upon it the first chance you get!

This is tough for me. I know for sure that season 1 is my favorite. It was so heartwarming, ever episode was so interesting and kept me on my toes wanting more.

But between the other 3 seasons I really dont know because they all have their faults.

Like, season 2 sucked in terms of lack of E/A and the relationships we had there, but I thought a lot of the episodes were still amazing quality and I really loved seeing EA come together at the end. It still felt like everwood to me.

Season 3 is where some episodes started going off track imo and the madison baby thing was too sappy for the show but at the same time, I really loved seeing E/A together in a relationship. I disliked a lot of storylines but out was also a very entertaining season.

and season 4 had some really great moments and scenes, but it also felt a bit fillery to me at times and the lack of EA was very hard to take. So I just really am not sure.

I think I like season 3 slightly over season 4, and then season 4 slightly over season 2 but they ere all good.

 Nothing compares to season 1.

SO many people share your thoughts on season 2. Quality is still so good but lack of EA sucked. EVC knocked the depression storyline out of the park.

Totally hear you about season 3... not a coincidence that’s when Berlanti let Rina lead the charge. I think that’s why we feel the difference. You’re right though about EA... loved seeing them day to day romantically together. Madison/baby storyline was the dark cloud.

everwoodfan52 06-30-2018 05:46 PM

I agree that Season 1 is my favorite and Season 2 is my worst. Season 3 and 4 are tied with Season 3 having the edge.

jediwands 06-30-2018 05:53 PM

Season 2 having Madison and EM made the season flawed, lol.

Barrybgb 07-01-2018 08:54 AM

I think my ranking would be in order - 1, 2, 3 and 4. Now, you can probably re-arrange most and it would still be okay because every season had greatness and I don't dislike any season.

 That's so true. This show was just so good. Even a low moment is still a high moment for most shows. We were really lucky.

Alexa 07-01-2018 04:21 PM

YUP Madison honestly is what kills season 2 for me. It seems that most people agree that season 1 was the best, season 2 was the worst, and 3/4 were kinda tied, it just depends on what you like.

Now that I'm thinking of it, if it werent for EA I would probably like season 4 more beause I loved the ephram/andy bits and them getting along. i loved the complete LACK of madison around and that entire storyline. I loved to see E/A coming back in the end. I loved the kyle/ephram relationship as well... so now I'm not sure again. But i think season 3 just felt more cohesive and maybe in general the episodes were more interesting over all? IDK.

I agree that every season of the show was amazing though, I never wanted to quit watching like I have with some of my other shows lol. And with 4 seasons it definitely didnt drag on. It sucks we didnt get more, but honestly, it was a good amount of episodes.

 I just cringe when she shows up at the Brown residence. Yuck. I also hated when Amy showed up to see Ephram obviously lost and depressed... and Madison was basically making fun of her under her breath. Madison was gross, a horrible character.

The father-son moments we received in season 4 were so good. I really loved how they recovered after all the crap that went down at the end of season 3. Ephram/Kyle dynamic was really good. I loved seeing EA coming back together too.

We did get a good amount of episodes overall. At least we received full seasons, and not 13 or 16 per season. I guess at the end of the day the series concluded when it was meant to. Now we might get a reboot or reunion in the future. I’m all for it as long as the main dynamics do not change. If it will honor the show and our main characters, bring it on. Otherwise, the series finale was phenomenal and we can easily fill in the blanks on what happened next. We didn’t get to see Ephram and Amy married with children but we know it took place. :D

A lot dislike season 2 because of Madison but that doesn't bother me. It made for good drama and there was a lot of other great stuff going on. I don't know what it is about season 4 that always makes it last for me. I mean, it is still great, of course. I can't quite put my finger on it.

The quality of season 2 was so good. The lack of EA scenes wasn’t fun but due to Amy’s depression and the fact that Greg and Emily had so much chemistry, their characters couldn’t be around each other because it would have severely watered down both Tommy and Madison, lol. On any other network, EVC would have gotten an Emmy for Amy’s depression.

Season 4 had some great father-son moments but maybe too much Jake, not enough evolution for Andy/Nina, and Berlanti inserting in certain storylines just in case we didn’t receive a season 5 played a part. I believe the series being up in the air had a direct effect on how season 4 was constructed.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with all of that!

secretk 07-03-2018 10:17 AM

As usual I will be the weird one and rank them differently compared to others :lmao: .

So for me the seasons are:
  1. Season 1
I think we all agree on the fact that Season 1 is the best. I loved the introduction of all of the characters and watching them getting to know each other.
  2. Season 4
I love this season because the characters had matured and had changed for the better which for me was the main focus of Everwood after all. They all learnt important lessons and you kind of see the results for that in Season 4.
  3. Season 2
Between Season 2 and 3 I like more Season 2. Emily did awesome job with her depression arc and there were some (while just few) awesome moments between Ephram and Amy.
  4. Season 3
In theory this had to be a better season. Amy and Ephram were together and we could have gotten far better stories for them but we did not. I found them the most boring in this season. On top of this add Hannah that just did not fit in Everwood's storyline or Bright/Hannah who for me were not realistic. And let's not forget how we were forced to find Hannah/Amy as friends as cool when this was just not authentic.

Honestly, you are not really that weird and different with this ranking. There's A LOT of people who rank 1 and 4 first and in that order. Some people believe season 4 had season 1-like quality. I actually think season 4 at its best was absolutely a lot like season 1. Plus, like you said, maturity was a key in season 4. I LOVED Ephram so much in season 4. I think I loved Ephram the most in season 4. He matured so much and was just so chill and at peace. He wanted Amy back and that was basically his "anxiety" of the season but he got there and it all worked out. I loved the father/son moments in season 4. It was like we were seeing the payoff given everything Andy/Ephram had been through before this final season. I loved all the Ephram/Amy moments in season 3 but I agree there was something about season 3 that felt different. I really do believe it was because Rina was in control and she plastered Hannah on the screen in a blunt way. Whether you liked or disliked Hannah, you were going to see a lot of her! Totally agree about the Hannah/Amy friendship too. EVC shined in season 2 with the depression storyline and there was a lot of quality in that season overall.

I completely agree that Season 4 Ephram was the best. Maybe this is one of the reasons I rank Season 4 so high :).

This is true but for me who is not totally EA fan I loved that in Season 4 both Amy and Ephram were mature enough to know why they want to be back together. Also I loved the library scene and the Postcards one. It was so natural. Emily and Greg did an awesome job. This is what I wanted from Season 3 but I did not get.

Quote:

Agree  . I loved how the Ephram/Andy dynamic had changed from Season 1. It was no longer volatile. There was no drama or pissing off contests. Ephram accepted Andy as his father and was willing to take his advice. Andy finally saw that Epgram sometimes have important things to say to him and he learnt to take an advice from him too. Loved them the most in Season 4.

Most probably because for me Season 3 lacked the usual magic Everwood had and especially Amy/Ephram.

Oh hell yeah the quality of Season 2 is way better than Season 3. I did not find the story lines that compelling but the acting was top notch. And while Emily did great in her depression arc watching her was depressing. I mean she was that good but in the end Season 2 was too depressing for me :D.
