He really is.

I actually think he ended up more popular than intended. I remember Rowling even stating that Snape does a few good things but at the heart of Snape he still isn't pure goodness. Don't remember her exact wording. But she was trying to say Snape isn't this perfect Wizard. He had his faults, he liked the Dark Side for a long while and any selflessness he had was due to loving Lily. In general, he didn't have pure light (had some shades of gray and dark, a bit more than the norm) inside of him.

That is true, but I think that's partly down to the movies erasing a lot of his worst moments

Ohhhh that's an excellent point about movie viewers. At least book viewers knew better but imagine just movie only viewers. They never got the real Snape on their screen.

Then again, movie only watchers never got to know the real Hermione, Ron, and HG and RHr romantic relationships. They also got a weird version of HHr too.

It's fine to just talk movies but to claim the movies cover and represent the books is ridiculous. Rowling has stated (in different ways) many times not to go there.
