Which is why I disliked Lindsey every second she was on the screen and Brooke for over half the series... deep down they both knew the deal... instead of facing the truth head on, they played the victim and sometimes (all the time if you're Lindsey) went with passive aggressive behavior. It was their way to deal with a reality they weren't interested in facing and accepting.

Lucas plays a large part in this of course. He shouldn't have been a running, scared little boy. But he was also an open book. He didn't manipulate Brooke and Lindsey. He never tried to go out of way to deny his love for Peyton. Not really. Brooke plainly knew and Lindsey read his books. He spelled it out through actions and words.
