Season 1 Peyton was pretty cool.

Harry Potter

So, I'm taking this Children's Literature course right now, and we're supposed to read a Harry Potter book, and the prof suggested if you haven't read any of them, pick one of the first three because they're shorter and more self-contained, and I have no idea which one to pick, other than just maybe starting with the first, so I figured I'd ask here. So, out of the first three, which would you recommend, or which one did you like best? Or would you recommend just going with the first one?

I figured this was the place to ask since there's quite a few HP fanatics.

Just a reminder to Tos that CBC is starting their reruns of the show tomorrow at 8pm so I hope you have your DVR/TiVo set up to record it since you have class at that time

Ooh, thanks! I would have forgotten knowing my memory. I have no DVR or TIVO, but I do plan to have someone press the record button a bit before eight. Cheaper than that newfangled technology.

Get a chance to watch yet, Tos?

Buffy

Pick up season 1, Michelle?

Thoughts on 7x09-7x14:
Spoiler:
7x09: OMG SQUEE. One of my favourite quotes in the WORLD was paraphrased in this ep. Go Quentin Travers. "We are still masters of our fate, still captains of our souls."

7x10: Interesting about the three Potentials that came with Giles. That one that was talking about the sheets with Willow, sleeping arrangements or whatever.. that made me a little sad for Willow&Tara. Didn't Tara used to say Willow took a lot of the sheets? *struggles to remember*

So they're up against the First, huh? Interesting. Yep, things are starting to look interesting.

7x11: Woo, I know Vi! Anyway, this ep was pretty cool. Whoa to Eve not being Eve, but the First. And XWB communicating telepathically. Had they done that before?

7x12: It was good to see Millie again and she's a Potential, too. Neat. (I know that her name is Amanda here, but I know her as Millie Kentner from Freaks and Geeks.) Also, aww Xander. "The One Who Sees." Really really sweet and now I can understand this icon I saw on lj before.

7x13: Damn, that was good. Didn't like seeing "Warren," but it was awesome, the editing. I'm such a sucker for good editing. And Kennedy/Willow is growing on me. But is Kennedy supposed to be 15? I think one of the Potentials (Rona?) was saying something about them being 15 in the episode before. Um... Anyway, ugh, Amy was behind the hex? BOO, AMY! Not cool. Also, hee to the being worried Giles was the First and not remembering if he touched anything. I know it's no joking matter, but hehe to "Now wait a minute - you think I'm evil... if I bring a group of girls on a camping trip and don't touch them?"

7x14: Wow, so Spike doesn't have a chip anymore. But, I *so* called that reveal about Principal Wood's mum being the second Slayer that Spike killed. So awesome.

I'm a day behind because I didn't watch any Buffy yesterday and I'm still keeping with my only 2 a day thing. Hee.

Not yet. Might not be able to get to until early next week. But maybe I'll get an hour when I can do it. I'm kind of looking forward to it.

Speaking of exciting, YAY, YAY, YAY Tos is finally reading a Harry Potter book, aweeeeeeeesome!

Oh man this is awesome because I know you'll love this series and with your intelligent thoughts I already look forward to the future where we can discuss the books together.

Ok deciding on the book! Oh Tos it's a no brainer, you HAVE to go in order. HAVE TO. Everything builds on the other. You could not possibly get the most out of CoS (book 2) or PoA (book 3) without reading where the birth of Harry Potter begins: SS/PS (book 1). It's just a must. The first book might not be Rowlings most exciting book of the series per se (though every single one is simply mind blowing, outstanding, but between the first 3 books as far as all out fun and adventure I'd say book 3 PoA is all about that) but you literally could not read the others and fully experience it without going in order. You would probably even be downright lost and confused if you read CoS or PoA first. I mean you could read one of them purely for entertainment but if you want to thoroughly enjoy this series, you have to go with book 1 SS/PS. It would be like watching Everwood starting with season 2 and on, could you imagine how different that would be since season 1 is so vitally important to everything that goes on in this entire series? Not to mention with the Harry Potter series there's just so many facts that you have to inhale in order to comprehend the series as a whole. Every book begins where the previous one ends and we're talking MAJOR transition. I could babble on about why I vote book 1 SS/PS but I think you get the picture.

So yes my vote is book 1 SS/PS.

Also, I'm banking on the fact that you're going to love it so much, you'll instantly want to continue on and read the entire series so of course next you will pick up CoS after you're finished with SS/PS. LOL.

Absolutely Jerry! Looking forward to it!

Gaby & Alan, you both are right on about season 1 Peyton. For me, Peyton was the reason why I watched season 1 in its entirety. I adore her. Outstanding character brilliantly portrayed by Hilarie.

Speaking of One Tree Hill... Remember the finale and Lucas proposing marriage in Vegas to one of the three girls? That has been revealed in spoilers in case anyone's wondering. If anyone wants to talk about this go with a nice white box and we can discuss. I will say one thing about it and here's a warning:

Please don't read on if you don't want to know who it is:

Spoiler:
I called it and thankfully I was right. Weeeeeeeeeee I knew it was Peyton based on that entire episode. I'm happy! Brooke made zero sense and Lindsey, good Lord, no. Now as far as what happens after the proposal who knows, though I read that Chad/Hilarie have numerous scenes together in 601/602 so that might mean something. Even if Lucas was an idiot all season long I'm so very glad my prediction was correct and it's Peyton though the dude needs a major explanation regarding what we already know... that he was running from his love for Peyton because it was always her...

Totally. Just don't go looking at stuff you shouldn't know about until you get there

I'd say it's the richly developed characters, honestly. Quality is amazing, but the characters are so well developed as well. An excellent combination. Something Whedon seems to have in common with Berlanti, I'd say.

Sweetness. I'm glad you won't wait as long as I did. 'Cause I owned season 1 for 14 months before starting to watch it. Hee.

And this is where you stop reading, Michelle. Some thoughts regarding 7x15 and 7x16:
Spoiler:
7x15 had Buffy going in another dimension and learned more about the first Slayer. That's always good times. I'm getting a bit suspicious of Principal Wood, er, Robin. Buffy let him in way too easy after finding out he was the son of a Slayer. The Chloe hanging from the ceiling creeped me out. I liked the Anya and Spike time.

7x16, Andrew was the Storyteller. It's always fun times with an unreliable narrator. Heh to the Willow and Kennedy makeout, but Andrew focusing on some handiwork Xander did. Aw, tears saved the day.

I posted the above on TWOP and then had to dash. After I came back, I wrote this:
I was just over on the season 5 thread on TWOP, reading the JerseyGirl review that was reposted and wow. While I remembered that the second Slayer was African American and thus totally saw the Spike killed Robin's mom reveal coming, I totally forgot about Spike taking her coat. This makes more sense out of this conversation:

PRINCIPAL WOOD: Nice coat. Where'd you get it?
SPIKE: (walks by Wood without looking at him or stopping) New York.

(And I suppose one drawback of not having previouslies on the DVDs. 'Cause in order to pull that quote, I looked at the transcript, which includes the previouslies. And apparently, that scene was included there.)

Also, gah. Something I didn't include in my post earlier: Faith is on the main menu for disc 5. I guess she'll be introduced in on one of the episodes in this disc. It's a good thing I've seen Angel season 4 already, I guess. (By the way, if I haven't mentioned, but I cover the part of the screen that includes the spoilery images when I'm on the menu for a specific episode -- I've done this since the end of season 6 because I was getting tired of being spoiled for things like Anya/Spike -- and the bottom of the screen for the first few minutes following the opening credits, so I'm not spoiled on guest stars. There are some they choose to reveal, but I'd rather not know. In fact, that's how I found out about Faith being on Angel season 4. I had been covering the episode menu, but not the guest star credits following opening credits.)

Oh me, too. It's the only season I own on DVD and even though I watched season 2 and liked some aspects of it (*cough*Breyton kissing*cough* and Sprague Grayden), I don't own it on DVD.

Well-said. I think it's what the two of them do best and why they're my two favourite writers/creators/whatever-you-wanna-call-'ems and why I at least try everything they do. I watch tv for great characters and these two, even crazyBerlanti, always always always deliver.

By the way, Berlanti was a fan of Buffy too, so yet another Everwood fan as a Buffy fan.

My best advice while watching the sets is to not look at the episode menus if at all possible because they are bad about spoiling the episode for you...and don't watch any of the interviews or listen to the commentaries unless you don't mind being spoiled, because they sometimes spoil things a couple of seasons ahead of time.

Lost

I got season 3 last Sunday, and I just finished watching it last night. I'm a bit upset at the Lost crew though...I mean, Expose', the Nikki and Paulo episode deserves a commentary, but the awesome season finale doesn't? What were they smoking when they made that decision?

Yeah totally. That's why I've been covering the screen when watching them on my laptop recently. Blows. Once the main menu for the disc spoiled me as well.

Thoughts on 7x17 to 7x20:
Spoiler:
I loved the flashbacks of 7x17. Spike is my second favourite character after Willow and I just love getting to see more of his old life. And okay, ugh, Andrew got on my nerves with an indirect diss of my girl Fred. I really liked the running theme of mothers throughout this episode.

7x18 brought Faith back to me, so awesome. Plus this episode had Nathan Fillion. And Rachel Bilson. (Where might I know the other Dream Potential though? Hmmm. -- Found out later it was Maya from Heroes.) Also, the Xander speech about Buffy was awesome.

7x19 was sad. The Andrew and Spike scene was pretty funny about the onion blossoms. Caleb is still creepy as **** and I hate him. The scene at the hospital with Xander and Willow was so very sad. Oh Andrew writing "breakup sex" on the board gave me the giggles. Kicking Buffy out was understandable, but really sad. Her scene with Faith at the end almost broke my heart in a way. Oh and heh to Nerf Herder playing at the Bronze. Just found out it was NH when I was looking at the transcript.

7x20, hm five Potentials on the main disc menu. *tries not to see too much into it* On the episode menu, I pulled away the thing that was covering the screen too early, but all I saw was the Bringer and not the intimate Spuffy moment. Speaking of the Spuffy moment, I'm glad I finally got to that. I had seen it in icons on Livejournal before. Very telling that the two of them are just laying there when the rest of the montage has everyone else getting their sex on. The slitting of the Bringer's throat -- Holy *******, bananas. I sometimes forget Giles can be ****ing dark. Willow/Kennedy hotness -- Now I know there's a fanbase that hates them. But my god, it was hot.
Tomorrow I finish the series. Woeeeeeeeeeeee.

Spoiler:
The main reason I hate Willow/Kennedy is because I hate Kennedy. I hated her when they introduced her. I hated her when they were obviously trying to get me to like her, and I really hated her when she was jumping in when they kicked Buffy out of the house. In fact, I didn't like any of them very much when that happened. I loved how Spike tore into all of them...and I really liked the SPuffy moment we finally got. I too was glad that he just held her instead of getting their freak on like everyone else was.
