Coming in at the eleventh hour as usual  but I finally watched this one tonight.

You know, there's times I wish I could go back and just tweak the writing a little bit to make stories make more sense and/or keep the characters in-character. This ep is one of them.

Rose was out of character (as has been discussed), Irv was out of character, and to some degree both Harold and Edna were as well. It bugs me because otherwise this is such a fantastic episode.

I'll start with Rose and Harold. I wish to goodness Harold would have explained to Rose that pink roses have always been her favorite, or that he knew that she loved that her father always gave her pink roses (since she's his "Rosebud") or that she one time expressed that imported Swiss chocolates were the one thing she always wanted from a guy on V-Day, or something to show that he gave her the gifts he did for a reason and not out of "thoughtless routine" as she implied. Because sometimes I think it's Rose that takes Harold for granted and not the other way around, and sometimes she needs to see that and not always be "right" about everything. Does that make sense?

I've been thinking about Irv's little prank and how it could possibly have been written to seem like something Irv would actually do (because...no. just no.) and the only thing I can come up with is if Edna had come out dressed for dinner in something especially fetching and he pretended to be all 'be still my heart' and in her fear over his health, she took it the wrong way and overreacted. Because Irv is just not that cruel, and neither is he so effing clueless that he wouldn't know that "joke" would upset Edna. I honestly don't know what they were thinking when they wrote that.

I know the Ephram/Amy angst can get really frustrating, but episodes like this one are what shows how strong of a couple they really are, especially for ones so young. It's like they're at the place right now where they both understand the depth of their feelings for each other, but that it's simply not the time to act on it and they're willing to wait. It's amazing that a couple of 16 year olds can have the maturity to make a decision like that, you know?

And again with the parallels - I think at this point Andy and Nina both realize there's a real attraction between the two of them, and they're both willing to push it to the back burner (perhaps indefinitely) because Nina is married and they're just not going to go there. They're still comfortable enough with each other to remain friends in spite of it, too, just like E/A.

I also really like that Ephram doesn't try to kid himself into thinking he feels things for Laynie that he knows he doesn't. She's just someone that he's willing to casually date and have a good time with, nothing more.

Gretchen still annoys me. I don't think that's going to change. Heh.

"Don't you see? My heart beats only for you." That will always be a bone-chilling line, with Irv lying in the snow. Lord a'mercy.

ETA - I forgot to say something about Colin. I really think his anger over the Ephram situation is because Amy has been lying to him up to this point and he knows it and he's tired of it. Because like he said, a month ago he didn't even "know" her and he wouldn't have been upset if she had just been honest with him. But now he does know her, and he likes her, and she's pretending to still be in love with him when they both know she isn't. I'd be tired of the games too, and I don't even have any head trauma to deal with.

You came in at the last moment but you certainly made a lasting impression. :D

I know, there really is no excuse for Irv no matter how you slice it. Having said that, he didn't do it because he's a mean prick, either, so no idea why the writers went there.

Rose/Harold were used just to engage in dialogue with the shrink. I really feel like this relationship is so strong and natural, it was the wrong relationship to throw into the fire to spin around in a heated way when that simply didn't make any kind of sense.

Totally agree about Ephram/Amy. You said it, the maturity they have at age 16 is unbelievable. They completely understand what is going on between them. They know it's okay to love each other right now but circumstances cannot allow them to be together in that way. However, they mean so much to each other, they will be friends because their connection wouldn't allow anything less. It is so beautiful. That ice skating scene at the end is precious.

Yes, Andy/Nina, same thing as far as understanding their romantic feelings but knowing it has to be friendship right now. Berlanti was so consistent creating a perfectly placed parallel between Ephram/Amy & Andy/Nina. I loved it. This was his subtle way of showing that they were getting the ending, stay tuned but until then, I will give both pairings beautiful moments as I build their relationships in the meantime. He was fabulous with this.

LOL About Colin not knowing who Amy was but then suddenly liking her. I mean, I am the biggest Amy fan on the planet but outside of her looks, was it her paranoia and intensity while he's trying to heal that attracted her to him? He's not that shallow to only like her for her looks yet I cannot see why he would suddenly fall for her given her scattered behavior up until this point. I guess her loyalty and dedication is something. That makes sense.

It was difficult to find some good pictures for this episode. Maybe that's because to many, it could be the weakest episode of the series. lol

You make a very good point though. At that point Amy wasn't doing much to be the great girlfriend that she had the potential to be. And Colin still didn't have the old memories of her to base his feelings on. Interesting.

I know, seriously! Amy was literally like the anti-great girlfriend. So with that, along with zero old memories, he was better off going for Ephram romantically since he was much nicer/patient with him.

Seriously, poor Colin if you think about it... he inexplicably falls back in love (or like) with Amy without having much to go on yet she is into Ephram. Then he doesn't have much time left on earth to live. That is sad. :( Though of course, the trio of Amy/Colin/Bright did have their time together just like how it was in childhood before he passed. Still, such a heartbreaking story.

Everwood Confidential

Since this episode is my least favorite of the entire series I thought I'd quickly watch and then post my thoughts quickly:

Good moments:

1. When Harold found out at the end that his dad loved him.

2. Ephram's date with Laynie until Ephram turns all weird and not so nice.

3. Andy and Harold talking about parenting. The story of Harold making Bright cry at least four times is hilarious. Flashback on one would have rocked.

In this episode, we see bratty Ephram come out again... I hate that Andy has to apologize for not letting Ephram go to a bar at 15 without a chaperone. Why is that even in play? Andy can be wrong but he's not here. Ephram really does turn into a brat since he throws things back in Andy's face. He goes with the trust and not wanting him to be happy. It is immature and repetitive. It also reminds me of Ephram not listening to Andy a year later when Andy tries to stop Ephram and Madison considering the legality and just knowing it was a recipe for disaster. If Ephram would have actually listened to his father instead of throwing a two year old fit about Andy not wanting him to be happy, he not only would have avoided two fights that made him look stupid, but he wouldn't have impregnated Madison either.

So I can and will continue to hate Madison but Ephram is entirely responsible for why bad things happen. He should have listened to his father, period. He didn't go there. We see what happened and his poor choices affected everyone involved. I can also get mad at Andy for his behavior at the end of season 2 and 3, but again, who caused all of this to take place? Ephram. Andy tried to stop it and Ephram simply wouldn't listen to him. Yes, we can hear the song and dance about teens not listening to parents but in most cases, we are talking about teens complaining of wanting to stay out later, not wanting to get into a bar at 15 or dating someone who produced jailbait and then impregnating this woman.

Anyway, this is why I am a huge fan of Andy Brown. He tried, he really tried.

The biggest thing to come out of this episode is the following dialogue:

Quote:

LAYNIE: He could be a pro.

EPHRAM: I am a pro.

LAYNIE: I'm having a good time, Ephram. [beat] I just, I don't know. Yet the other day when I saw Amy, I thought you maybe liked her or something.

EPHRAM: Oh, Amy and I? Oh no. We're totally just friends. I mean, we hung out a bit. But we talked about your brother a lot. It was all Colin all the time. I tried to get her to diversify but no luck.

LAYNIE: It's so ironic.

EPHRAM: What's that?

LAYNIE: Her being so devoted to him when he was going to break up with her.

[Laynie looks to see Ephram's reaction.]

EPHRAM: Wh-What are you talking about?

LAYNIE: Well, I mean, he was thinking about it at least. He told me a few days before the accident. He liked her but not as much as she liked him.

EPHRAM: Did you tell Colin that when he came home?

LAYNIE: Well, I didn't have the heart. Now I don't have to. He's fallen in love with her. And this time, it's pretty equal.

EPHRAM: So Amy has no idea?

LAYNIE: Well, no.

EPHRAM: None?

LAYNIE: No.

EPHRAM: You cannot tell her. You cannot tell her.

LAYNIE: Why would I tell her? I'm not an idiot.

EPHRAM: Well, I, I didn't mean it like that. I just...

LAYNIE: I know what you meant.

[Silence. Ephram puts his hand to his forehead like he can't believe he just did what he did.]
Finding this out about Colin breaking up with her before the accident was very interesting. I think it further promoted Amy's fantasy about her and Colin thinking they were this big thing when they really were not. They were a childhood romance that was destined to end sooner or later. The accident, IMO, prolonged the inevitable and of course there was his unfortunate death but I really think this bit of news was to show that Amy's dedication to Colin, while noble, did not necessarily stack up to what the true reality of their relationship was pre-accident. It can be debated as to what Amy/Colin developed after the accident and before his death... was it real? Or was it based on a lie because of what we found out in this very episode regarding Colin having plans to break up with her?

Okay, those my thoughts. Not the greatest episode. In fact, my least favorite of the series. It just didn't flow properly, and the future Madison pregnancy looms (while watching this from the beginning) because of Ephram's poor choices since he refuses to listen to his father. It is frustrating to watch an episode like this knowing that Andy tried really hard, he was the best father he could be and it simply wasn't enough because he wasn't listened to. I love Ephram but this is true in my mind so it's very frustrating. I understand that the bottom line is Ephram simply cannot trust his father. But why is that at this stage? What has Andy done in the episodes and moments leading up to this? Andy has done a 180. He has been great. They have come a long way. I do not understand why this strong lack of trust still lingers and is not at least 50% better. I am not saying they are perfect but they are certainly better than Ephram is portraying. They are not like they were at the beginning of the series. Ephram just goes back to that, and that is why he feels he rules over a bar decision and dating/impregnating Madison. Again, Andy tried.

I realized I came down on Ephram hard but anything that connects to Madisongate will do that to me. I also hate how Andy got the blame for so much in late season 2/3 when he tried so hard and wasn't listened to back in season 1 during this time period. I still love you, Ephram, I just wish you would have listened to Andy! LOL

I don't get the dislike for this episode. I thought it was hilarious. It has some great Andy/Harold moments. Their comic timing is just superb. Those two could star in a sitcom.

jediwands 06-12-2013 02:43 PM

It's great that you liked it! I am sure others feel exactly the same as you do.

An overwhelming majority disliked it but I think that's because we have been spoiled in that it's Everwood so we expect the very best all the time. 98% of the time we get the best. When that 2% happens, then everyone goes insane.

This episode followed one of the very best episodes of the series for many, so it had a lot to live up to as a result. I think that also played a part.

This episode also doesn't follow the same formula as the rest of the episodes before it. It was different. Amy was hardly in it and then Matt is another thing that people didn't really like since he was an unlikable character.

But then again, this episode gives an opportunity to show how great Tom and Treat are together. Also, going a different route from the previous episodes allowed us to take a breath before the heat really starts to sizzle during the rest of the episodes in season 1.

I like reading the description over on TWoP:
Quote:

"If It Weren't For You Meddling Kids!"

Everwood, Confidential - Treat and Patch Abbott solve the dumbest mystery this side of the Cartoon Network. Delia has the flu, but at least she's in the episode. Ephram has a mean piano teacher, and totally screws things up with Laynie. Bright is either on a long vacation or buried in someone's back yard, neither of which makes this episode better.
LOL.

I hated the way that this date ended. It had so much potential. Why did Ephram have to act so hyper about Laynie not saying anything to Amy about Colin wanting to break up with her?! How obvious could he have made it?!?

Agree totally!! Ephram was a brat!! Poor Andy is trying so hard to be a good protective parent. And the piano teacher! He was no help!?! I hated the look he gave Ephram...it was kind of like mocking Andy! He had some nerve interfering at all! :irked

This "romance" was definitely a fantasy. There was absolutely no depth to the two of them. Amy wanted so badly to play out this fantasy and to make it work. It really was hopeless.

It did have great Andy/Harold moments. I guess what made it not the best episode was the side story/mystery involving the old guy and the fact that many of the major beloved characters were not involved in the episode.

:( I know. I can't totally blame poor Ephram because his heart belongs to Amy no matter how much he tries to fight it. I just wish he would have done a better job of hiding it. lol I felt badly for Laynie.

I know! It sort of reminded me of when the Grandfather and Ephram went after Andy. At least Julia's dad has more of a right than stupid Matt. He is a prick.

I actually would have liked to see Colin and Amy break up. The one thing that I don't like about Amy is that when she gets a boyfriend, she forgets her family exist. It annoyed me very much to see her so disrespectful toward her parents.

Are you talking about this season or Season 2?

jediwands 06-13-2013 08:35 AM

Season 2 Amy had clinical depression so the disrespectful aspect I feel was entirely in line with what was going on with her.

Amy forgetting about everything else but her romantic partner is definitely something she would do, even with Eprham in season 3, and she said as much to him. I was glad to see her take the time at the end of season 3 while they were broken up to work on herself more. By season 4 this issue was taken care of.

Totally. That was a theme for her throughout the series.
