Everwood UK Thread: Five days a week, baby!

Hi everyone.

Hopefully, somebody (or several people, actually) out there reading this will (a) live in the UK and (b) have noticed that Living TV has begun broadcasting season one of 'Everwood' (finally!) weekdays at 2.50pm (with a repeat on LivingTV+1 an hour later). Five episodes a week means we'll have finished the first year within four and a half weeks and, hopefully, season two will follow not long thereafter. However, for now the schedule runs as follows:

Thursday 20th: #103, 'The Kissing Bridge'
Friday 21st: #104, 'Deer God'
Monday 24th: #105, 'The Doctor Is In'
Tuesday 25th: #106, 'We Hold These Truths'
Wednesday 26th: #107, 'Till Death Do Us Part'
Thursday 27th: #108, 'Turf Wars'
Friday 28th: #109, 'Is There A Doctor In The House?'

Now, if anyone has managed to catch the first three eps, feel free to visit this thread and vent steam regarding how much you did (or didn't) enjoy them, or just post random thoughts... whatever, I'd just like to talk about the show with someone!

Oh and please keep this a spoiler-free thread. No details about future episodes, thanks!

Right, well, I love the concept of the show. Berlanti is an amazingly talented writer and is taking the sensible route, taking his time, unravelling the histories and stories of the Everwood populace slowly as the season begins to progress. Novel little touches such as Irv's narration and wonderfully befitting music ('Leader of the Band' is of particular note) really enhance my appreciation of the work as a whole and demonstrate and dedication and passion for the material that the producers and actors seem to have in spades.

Ephram is simply a fantastic character and one with which I can wholeheartedly empathise, vis a vis his outsider status (and, indeed, in his dysfunctional dynamic with his father which is getting better and better...) Gregory Smith is doing a fantastic job with everything he's given. I was particularly impressed with his piano-playing scene with Emily VanCamp in 'Friendly Fire' (who is also an extremely talented actress); eminently believable and genuinely tense, and most noteably with the altercation with Andy in the Pilot. His frustrated and aggressive delivery of his lines ('I wish you'd died instead of her') moves me every time I see it (and they do like recapping that sequence, don't they?!) and gives me faith in the promise of the programme.

What else do I love? A plethora of things. Harold Abbott is the ultimate foil, played to perfection, but Tom Amendes is sufficiently subtle in his portrayal to allow him to be likeable at the same time as being a self-righteous pain in the ass. The humour is pleasantly down to earth and the dynamic between the two doctors looks like one I could really enjoy. Delia's narrative is also wonderfully gentle and really entertaining as a result. I feel that Treat Williams has greatly improved over the course of the three episodes; his delivery, particularly in the Pilot, was a little hammy and seemed to pale in comparison to Gregory Smith's performance, but now he seems to be coming into his own. Cody McMains is also sufficiently surreal as Wendall to have greatly intrigued me, although I have yet to be entirely convinced by Chris Pratt's character. Bright seems too much the quintessential, archetypal jock for my liking; but there again, I did think Harold's character would be little more than a caricature when I first encountered him but I've been proven majorly wrong.

Okay, I think I've babbled for long enough. Hopefully, some fellow soul out there will be gagging to talk about this show as much as I am and will come across this thread... hopefully.

Hi

I'm so happy to see another person from the UK who watches it. I actually wasn't gonna watch it ( ) but my bro wanted me to record it and i got hooked .

I really hope season 2 will start soon after season 1 has finished.

Hey guys... yay, some fellow UK Everwood fans... Big DC Fan, how did you find the five episode run over the weekend?

I 'The Kissing Bridge'. Favourite episode so far, with a truly wonderful script by Rina Mimoun. A gentle exploration of some serious issues that avoids being heavy-handed or overly moralistic. Unlike countless movies and TV programmes I could mention, 'Everwood' doesn't seem to beat its audience around the head with the point until they're knocked senseless, and that is certainly a good thing.

Other random observations...

Although it seemed a little trite in conception, 'Deer God' managed to be a thoroughly enjoyable episode, particularly as regards the dynamic between Ephram and Andy. Gregory Smith just gets better and better, doesn't he? Fantastic actor with a long future ahead of him.

How wonderful is Harold? He gets all the best lines... 'Dr. Coco Puffs', lol!

The intro music has set up camp in my brain and refuses to leave. Not that I particularly want it to, of course, seeing as it's brill.

Ephram is exceedingly cute. That little mark on the corner of his mouth gets me every time.

Once again, my presumptions are proved entirely inaccurate. Enjoyed Bright very much in 'The Kissing Bridge'; lovely character development.

On 'The Kissing Bridge' again... how good was that teaser sequence? Lovely peace of narration and comic timing.

Roll on the next five!

Paul

I only managed to watch the first two episodes on Saturday. Liked them I was really busy with work on Sunday, so I was doing stuff and had the episodes on in the background. I've recorded them all, so between now and Saturday, will be sure to watch the three episodes from Sunday that I've kinda missed!

It's intense to watch five episodes a weekend, but the time schedule during the week isn't convenient for me, so catching it at the weekend means I can record without adverts

Bye for now,

As usual I found out that Everwood was on by accident. I had been wondering for ages whether we would eventually get it in the U.K.

I was flicking channels on Saturday and managed to catch virtually the beginning of the first episode on the Living + 1 channel. I then watched the second one and all the rest on Sunday. 2:50pm is a stupid time to show then in the week but at least they repeat them at the weekend.

I read good reviews by people on the internet that I know and respect from their opinions on other shows and so far I have been impressed by Everwood. It has a very different feel to most of the other shows that come out of the WB stable, it doesn't feel as rushed and I hope it continues in the same style.

Hey Big DC Fan! Yeah, I believe I am the same person actually... hermonifus, I used to be until I lost all web capabilities. Glad you enjoyed the first two episodes... trust me, it just keeps getting better and better.

Esmo - ITA. The show certainly does feel a lot slower in its pacing and I think I prefer my drama that way... gentle and reflective.

Oh and hello to Maria too, thanks for the welcome.

Okay, the following comments contain spoilers on #105 and #106, so for those who have yet to see them, turn away now...

'The Doctor Is In' was a good episode with some cracking scenes (loved the teaser sequence especially... hilarious, wonderful acting by Tom Amendes. Don't you just love the way he says 'with a masters in social work'? lol), but even it pales in comparison with 'We Hold These Truths'. What an outstanding 45 minutes of television. Beautiful script, beautiful acting and some truly beautiful music (highly impressed with the instrumental pieces). Loved the juxtaposition to the sound of 'Caught By The River'; 'twas a wonderfully woven piece of dual storytelling. Gregory and Emily blew me away yet again, in pretty much all of their scenes together, but especially in Amy's revelation regarding her fight with Colin. The two actors bring such a strong sense of realism to the programme and, on a lighter note, Ephram gets some extremely cute lines (the Twix thing particularly, and the various conversations over the travel games) that continually make me want to glomp the guy. Cudos also to Chris Pratt, whose delivery (and dialogue) was enough to bring a tear to my eye during and after his convo. with his dad. I really felt that this episode helped me care a whole ton more about both Colin and Bright's characters, and actually invest in the Amy/Colin relationship. That gorgeously picutresque and idyllic teaser sequence was of particular note in that regard.

Needless to say, I've been completely bowled over by this show. Let's hope the feeling continues...

Paul

Okay, is it a typo error, or am I right in saying that if you missed the whole week's worth of episodes, then you've only got 4 to catch up on, rather than 5 - as you've said #105 this Saturday, when in fact it should have been aired last Sunday

Below is how I thought it was going to be each weekend:

101 "Pilot Episode" - SAT 22 Nov
102 "The Great Doctor Brown" - SAT 22 Nov
103 "Friendly Fire" - SUN 23 Nov
104 "The Kissing Bridge" - SUN 23 Nov
105 "Deer God" - SUN 23 Nov
106 "The Doctor Is In" - SAT 29 Nov
107 "We Hold These Truths" - SAT 29 Nov
108 "Till Death Do Us Part" - SUN 30 Nov
109 "Turf Wars" - SUN 30 Nov
110 "Is There a Doctor in the House?" - SUN 30 Nov

7.29pm

PLEASE let me know asap about the repeat of #105 tomorrow, cos I'm recording them this weekend, and I won't know if #105 is on tomorrow or not, as I've not seen that episode. THANKS.

Hey-lo Big DC Fan.

Right, explanation time. Listing #105 as 'The Doctor Is In' is not a typo error; it's the confusing nature of American shows' debut seasons that's responsible! The episodes are listed as follows...

#100: 'Pilot'
#101: 'The Great Dr. Brown'
#102: 'Friendly Fire'
#103: 'The Kissing Bridge'
#104: 'Deer God'
#105: 'The Doctor Is In' ...etc.

Although the Pilot is technically episode one, it is not considered as such since it is an independent production, the strength of which bought the show a debut season. Thus, 'The Great Dr. Brown', despite being episode two of the show, is listed as #101 because, technically, it is season one's first episode. Confusing? Hell yeah, but it's a pattern repeated continuously across all US shows (see 'Dawson's Creek's first season for further evidence). So, consequently, the sixth episode is listed as the fifth; so 'The Doctor Is In' becomes #105.

Your listings for the weekend are right, it's just the numbers that complicate matters. Sadly, 'Deer God' will not be repeated tomorrow.

If you've missed the whole week's worth of episodes in any week, you do have five to catch up on, with two on the Sat and three on the Sun.

Hope this sorts out the mess!

Paul

PHEW! Thanks Paul for clearing that up for me! I sat up last night watching 2 more episodes, and will watch one now, so that I'm all up-to-date.

I was really worried that already, I've got confused with the episodes and that perhaps only 4 instead of 5 were aired this week!

Thanks again, I totally understand it now, just like DC 100 = Pilot Referring to DC was a good idea

Hi again,

Just wondered, I only catch "Everwood" on the weekends, but I was wondering after each episode during the week, do they show you a preview/trailer for the following days episode? In fact, have you seen any trailers for this show apart from the one I've seen on the weekend, where the local town ask Dr Brown if it's true that his services are free.

Bye for now,
