"I said it tastes. like. s**t."

BEST (FUNNY) DELIA MOMENT EVER.

I'll post more about the rest of the ep later. That's just always the first thing I think of.

I love that line as well and I always giggle everytime I remember Andy telling Linda, "Mmm. Who doesn't love a good millet?"

Heh, my very favorite moment of the episode is Ephram cracking up at Delia's remark. And then Andy's freakout, but Ephram's laughter is completely hilarious to me.

So glad to get to this episode, by the way, because I like it a lot better than the previous two, hee.

.
And then Andy sending everyone to their room and Linda having to remind him that she doesn't live there.

Hee! It's just such a hilarious scene all around. Poor Andy is just so mortified, Ephram's laughing his ass off, Delia's got the mad eyes on and Linda's trying so hard not to laugh. Love it.

As for the rest of the ep - Brittany gets to be the MeoW. Yippee. Every ep could use more Brittany. Or, you know, not.

Amy broke my heart so bad in this one. "Explain to me why you would help my friend get better and not your own daughter. Do you know how stupid I felt these past few months? Watching everyone around me move on, and here I am wondering what the hell's wrong with me? Why can't I? All along, there's been a reason, only you never told me about it. You just let me think that I was crazy." I just feel so awful for her here. (And a few eps later, when she steals the prescription pad and then Harold condescendingly says that he'll prescribe her the meds as though she's just being the biggest brat in the world, she just looks so sad and tired and defeated and I just want to knock him in the head.)

Love, love, love the ending where Delia has chosen her Hero. *sniiiiiifffffff*

Post O' Randomness!
  • “I’d like to run my own country someday. But not Israel, that one’s too hard.” Hee, this is an awesome Delia episode right off the bat.
  • Wow, with that “old soul” conversation, they weren’t even trying to pretend that they were doing anything but setting up an Ephram/Madison pairing, were they? (Though that info was released when the “season 2 preview” blurbs were published in TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly, prior to even the premiere, let alone Madison’s entrance, so it wasn’t exactly a state secret.)
  • Perhaps I’m a prude, but in what universe is Margaret Sanger an appropriate topic for a fourth-grader’s presentation? Dude. Though there is some hi-larious irony in Madison’s being the one to suggest the most prominent figure in the birth control movement. Heh.
  • Okay, and don’t pillory me for this, but I do like the “Welcome to the world of complex emotions” exchange. Mildly condescending, but Ephram’s “I’m tired” response is too cute.
  • Wow, way to make vegetarianism look as unappealing as possible, show. Jerks. But it gave us the immortal dinner scene, and for that, all is forgiven.
  • Whee! The beginning of Rose’s S2 awesome! Which will reach its apex in “Family Dynamics”! Of course, I think this is also the official beginning of a rousing season-long game of “What Firstborn Child?” It’s frankly kind of a marvel that Bright moseyed through the year as well as he did, heh.
  • This may be even more wildly unpopular than my comment about that Ephram/Madison exchange, but…I don’t think the Amy/Laynie scene regarding the antidepressant revelation is particularly well-written. It’s not the storyline itself or anything, just that that specific scene feels a little bit like one of those “chatty girlfriends” prescription drug commercials (which are…usually for BC, hee, bringing it all back to Madison and Margaret Sanger), what with Laynie outlining the ways in which the meds have helped her. Just a bit clunky, and it really only stands out because the rest of the episode’s writing is so strong.
  • Hey! It's Dream Colin! I forgot about this sequence. *Makes note to possibly clip ep for that current music video I have underway about the younger set and their losses*
  • And I really have nothing to contribute regarding the reveal of Delia's hero. It's just...simple, and logical, and perfect. Did anyone else, back upon seeing the ep for the first time, guess that she might choose Julia? Because I really didn't think of that, and felt rather silly for not guessing it, but at the same time not expecting it gave the scene that much more emotional impact.

(I guess I did have something to contribute on that last point, hee.)

I love the moment where Delia's in the lounge suggesting possible heroes to Madison & Ephram and when she mentions Mandy Moore, both Ephram & Madison go "No way!" or words to that effect! I also love the already mentioned "I'd like to run my own country one day. But not Israel, that one's too hard." as it showcases some of Delia's personality (she's always been quite bossy, wanting Arnie to be her slave, for example) and sounds very realistic for a 10 year-old. I too was floored by the reveal that Julia is Delia's hero, as I wasn't expecting it, but really should have been, 'cause Julia was incredible and Delia clearly adored her. I'm fairly sure I cried when Delia was telling her class about her mother. Also awww to Ephram & Andy being there and the looks on their faces.
The dinner table scene is hysterical too! I love Marcia Cross as Linda too, she's just so bright, warm and delightful. Kudos to her acting skills as she's completely different as Bree Van De Kamp in Desperate Housewives.

Oh I never expected Julia as the hero either, and in fact didn't catch on until the look on Andy's face as it dawned on him gave it away. Then I dissolved into tears.

(Interesting random fact - Delia mentioned that Julia always wore pearl earrings. Orthodox Jews don't consider pearls precious because oysters aren't kosher. Not that I'd really expect GB to pay that much attention to something like that, heh.)

Oh it's definitely not just you, the scene clunked about as loudly as the Ring when Frodo dropped it on the floor. I almost wish Laynie had given Amy some of them to try out for herself, or something, to make that scene feel like more than a Tonight's episode brought to you by Zoloft! moment. Even if Laynie had just let it slip that Harold prescribed them instead of being all "Want to see the bottle?" it would have flowed better. Bah.

Very interesting -- I actually never gave that any thought even knowing that oysters aren't kosher. But then, it's hard to say how observant Julia was, so possibly not an issue (makes me want to start up conversation in the Religion on Everwood thread again, though!).

And yeah, any of your alternate suggestions would have worked better for the Amy/Laynie scene. It was just so unnecessarily expository.

Wasn't Zoloft one of the Everwood sponsors? I guess they really wanted that scene to be a commercial.
It's the same as when Ephram drinks a bottle of water on the show. He holds the bottle for several minutes before he actually takes a drink, and turns the bottle every which way so that everyone can see what kind of water it is! (another sponsor!)

You know, I bet it was. Oh, gosh, I hated when the show went all product placement on us. Hannah and Amy's Mercury Milan(!!!) gushfest makes me die a little inside every time I watch the otherwise lovely "Lost and Found."

I was wondering if we could think up any of the other characters' heroes. Who would Ephram's hero be, for example? Would anyone else choose their parents? Would Julia be Ephram's too? Would any of the Abbott kids choose Harold or Rose? Or Edna? Would anyone possibly have a sillier hero than Brittany?

I'm clearly in a discussion question mood this afternoon, heh.

I will have to give this some further thought when I have more time to, but just offhand, I sort of think Harold might be Bright's. Maybe not in S2, but thinking of their exchange in "Fate Accomplis," where Bright expresses such admiration for Harold's work and even brings up the EMT idea as a way in which he can emulate his father (even though he doesn't explicitly put it that way), it seems plausible. It goes rather nicely with Harold's own admiration for Bright as eventually expressed (instead of being cut and only released on the DVDs, heh) in "All the Lonely People."
