Everwood Reboot/Revival Discussion Thread

Hey everyone!

I figured this bit of news deserved its own thread
.

Quote:

Reboots and revivals are the trend du jour, and you’ve got more than a few popular titles in your library. We’ve talked before about “Everwood.” Is that closer to becoming reality? Are there other other series that you would want to reboot or revive?

Berlanti: Definitely of all of them, “Everwood” is the one that has a special song in my heart. I think it’s about schedules and finances and budget and if we can get a budget to a place, I think that there’s a real shot that that could come back. I think we just have to figure out what would be the best way to do it, but there’s nothing firm in place yet.

The rest: Greg Berlanti on Setting the Series Record, Netflix, Everwood Reunion – Variety
I love when Berlanti says that Everwood has a special song in his heart. I can hear that same song. I think people like EVC agree and of course, he's speaking for the entire fandom!!!!!

This:

"The prospect of an Everwood revival has progressed from “pipe dream” to “realistic possibility.” In a new interview with our sister pub Variety, Greg Berlanti — who created the beloved WB drama — suggested that a reunion project is becoming more a question of when than if.

Berlanti: “I think it’s about schedules and finances and budget and, if we can get a budget to a [workable] place, I think that there’s a real shot that that could come back,” he said. “I think we just have to figure out what would be the best way to do it. But there’s nothing firm in place yet.”

‘Everwood’ Revival: Will There Be a Season 5? Emily VanCamp, Chris Pratt | TVLine
Isn't this incredible?!!!!

What amazing news even it's still speculation.

Thoughts?

If it happens, how would you want it constructed?

The Crow 05-16-2018 03:07 PM

I'd like to see a reunion movie. He's right that schedules are crazy, especially for Chris Pratt, but the love of the project seems to be there, so I could see it happening. I'd definitely watch if it did happen.

Question, would you want a reunion if only part of the people came back? Like, if there was no Bright or no Andy or whoever?

Would you watch a reboot? I don't think I would. I can't imagine them catching lightning in a bottle twice.

So great seeing you post about Everwood. It reminds me of years ago when we went back and forth.

Yes, the first thing I thought of was Chris. I have no doubt Chris would be willing to participate but his schedule will be tricky. Emily also has The Resident and I think it's moving to Fall so she's going to be a bit busy too. Treat has Chesapeake Shores but that schedule is very different and more open for sure thankfully. I am not sure about the others.

Very good question about the reunion with only part of the cast or not... I am not sure what to think. Well, I probably would, lol, IF the writing was there and I believe it would be. Like, I wouldn't want to find out Andy died or something. But Bright could be out of state or out of the country doing something. Andy, it would be a little more difficult though.

I would be open to a movie or a season 5 depending on the construction. I have too much faith in Berlanti but then again you're right, Alan... Everwood was so perfect... would we risk the reboot not living up to our expectations? You make a good point.

It's such fantastic news, but I don't believe it will work if not everyone is involved. What would be the point then?

Great topic Michelle.

To be honest, I’d have mixed feelings about Everwood coming back. Part of me would absolutely love it because it was by far the greatest television show that I’ve ever watched in my life, but it aired at a certain point in time and it featured a group of actors who were either just starting out or who were well established and putting their talent into a truly unique show, and it might be hard to recapture that magic. Chris Pratt is a major star now so I couldn’t see him being involved with an Everwood reboot unless he played a small cameo role like Melissa McCarthy did with the reboot of Gilmore Girls, and I’m not sure how available some of the other actors would be.

With that being said however, I’d love to see this cast, or the majority of this cast, work together again because they played off each other so well and there were so many stories left to tell on Everwood, so if an Everwood reboot ever came to fruition, I would definitely tune in.

You summed up pretty much how I feel. I was thinking of Melissa McCarthy when thinking of Chris. I am sure that is about how much we’d get from Chris. Maybe a little more but I can’t see him available for a big chunk of time. But the good news is while Bright was a strong secondary character, he wasn’t one of the four major characters either.

I feel like Emily, Greg, Treat, and Tom are the core four and any reunion/reboot/revival has to run through them. If any of those four were severely restricted as far as availability then it would be tough to make it work.

Like I said, I have all the faith in the world in Greg Berlanti. I can’t see him moving forward with this unless it’s high quality. Everwood is a part of his heart. He would proceed with great attention to detail and care.

They're definitely the core four and I'd also add in Rose. I could see a story where the baby they adopted is now a teenager and it would be intriguing, and funny to see an older Harold having to deal with raising a teenager once again.

If the actress who played Rose, Merrilyn Gann, wasn't available, another storyline would involve Harold being a widower trying to raise that girl they adopted, (they could say that Rose's cancer came back and she passed away from it) and it could mirror what Andy went through when he was a widower raising two children.

What was good about this show is that it gave equal time to the adults and the teenagers, so there are still a lot of stories that could be explored with all of the characters being older than when we last saw them.

I also think that Greg Berlanti would put his heart into an Everwood reboot and it could be fantastic.

That would be very interesting. Depending on how far they go into the future, we could also see Edna and Harold without Irv and Rose. Edna and Harold always had a complex relationship.

Yes, I think after the core four then we're talking Rose, Nina, Edna, Bright, and Delia. It would be fantastic if they were all available but I think there's room to work without one or two of them as well.

I loved this so much. Everwood was a balanced show. It wasn't that typical teen show where the teens ruled the storylines and the adults followed (I am looking at you, Dawson's Creek). There was a nice balance. You cared about the adults and teens on Everwood because there really wasn't a separation. We had direct interaction all around. It was perfect.

 He really would. In my recent Flash write up a couple days ago, I even commented on how Berlanti constructs The Flash in Everwood-like fashion... the perfect blend of comedy/drama... that unique way Berlanti could write a really sad storyline but include that quirky comedy side-by-side to balance things out. The Flash goes there too... even the music on The Flash reminds me of Everwood. Not to mention the construction of Barry and Iris, the famous comic-canon pairing. Berlanti makes sure this is his Ephram/Amy-like pairing that he treats with care, emotional connection always ruling everything they do.

Berlanti misses Everwood and there's no doubt his heart never left the show. He would put his heart and soul into a revival or reboot, I have no doubt.

Sorry, but We Don't Need an Everwood Revival

Hollywood has seen a number of reboots, revivals and remakes since Netflix's Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life jump-started pop culture's latest obsession with nostalgia, and now another beloved WB series seems to be inching toward a revival.

In a new interview with Variety, uber-producer Greg Berlanti, who recently set a new record with 14 series on the air, said the possibility of a revival of his coming-of-age drama Everwood is becoming more and more likely.

"I think it's about schedules and finances and budget, and if we can get a budget to a [workable] place, I think that there's a real shot that that could come back," he told the magazine. "I think we just have to figure out what would be the best way to do it. But there's nothing firm in place yet."

Let us stop you right there, Greg. Even though there's still nothing set in stone, and as much as we truly love Everwood — it helped us get through the hell that was 2017, after all — is a revival really necessary?

Everwood follows Andy Brown (Treat Williams), a brilliant surgeon but largely absent father who packs up his life in New York and moves his two children, Ephram and Delia (Gregory Smith and Vivien Cardone), to a small town in Colorado following the sudden death of his wife (Brenda Strong). But the drama is the product of a very specific time and place. Premiering in 2002 and running four seasons, the show was earnest and heartfelt in a way that was common for TV in the days of The WB but now is rarely seen as shows have to fight for survival in a crowded television landscape that continues to evolve. While the prospect of a wistful, feel-good series like Everwood returning certainly sounds appealing in 2018, there are a number of issues that arise.

First and foremost, unlike, say, Veronica Mars, which was canceled without a proper ending and later revived as a crowdfunded feature film in 2013, Everwood had an emotionally fulfilling series finale in which everything came full circle and all the show's loose ends were tied up.

Because Berlanti and fellow executive producer Rina Mimoun didn't know if the series would make the jump to The CW when The WB merged with UPN in 2006, they filmed two different endings. The series sadly wasn't renewed, but the show ended with Ephram and Amy (Emily VanCamp) finally reuniting, Andy and Nina (Stephanie Niznik) becoming engaged, and Hannah (Sarah Drew) happily forgoing a full ride to Notre Dame in order to stay in Colorado near Amy and Bright (Chris Pratt). While it would certainly be fun to see what the Browns and the Abbotts are doing today, the series finale didn't exactly leave fans with the kinds of lingering questions that would warrant checking in. (And no, we don't care about what happened to Ephram's son with Madison.)

We also have to consider the possibility that the entire cast might not be back. Although VanCamp recently told TVLine that she would be interested in reprising her role should a revival happen, Chris Pratt, whose character Bright was initially a screwup but became one of the strongest parts of the show as the character matured, has a booming film career.

When the cast, along with Berlanti and Mimoun, reunited for the show's 15th anniversary last summer, Pratt was noticeably absent. In 2014, when they came together for a similar reunion at the Austin Television Festival, Pratt was again not present, though he did call into the panel to thank the fans for their continued support of the show. Honestly, it's hard to imagine an Everwood revival without Bright and his infectious enthusiasm or surprisingly heartfelt observations, so if Pratt's busy schedule can't accommodate filming the revival, a crucial piece of what made Everwood work could very well be missing altogether, and that would be unfortunate for everyone involved.

But perhaps the biggest issue surrounding a possible Everwood revival is the fact that it would contribute to Hollywood's pervasive culture of focusing on the past instead of looking at the future. Television, both as a business and as a product, has changed considerably in the 16 years since Everwood first premiered. Although the show holds a special place in the hearts of the people who grew up on The WB, what reason is there to bring it back? Is there anything left to say that hasn't already been said?

While it's true that ABC and NBC have seen success with Roseanne and Will & Grace, respectively, both shows often feel like old friends trying to recapture their glory days. Perhaps instead of trying to recreate the magic of what once was, we should give the next generation the opportunity to have their voices heard. Let's focus on giving young men and women coming-of-age series that reflect their actual upbringing instead of trying to relive our own. Otherwise, we run the risk of entering a world in which Ephram still wears long-sleeved shirts under his T-shirts and thinks it's acceptable.

Everwood is currently streaming on Hulu.

Yes, because there aren’t enough NEW shows being produced.... Come on, the percentage of shows that are reboots/revivals/rehashes is SO small compared to the amount of new series. And there’s no way that’s going to change. Does Everwood “need” a revival? No, there aren’t really any lingering answers we viewers were robbed of. But it’d be cool to see what’s going on with the family and town after all these years. I’ve been watching the first couple seasons (which I missed originally) on CW Seed and it’s a really special show — one that, like you say in the article, is different than everything else being put out there today. Surely there’s room for that?

Sorry, you don't speak for everyone TV Guide. It also seems to be that if 2017 was really all the "hell" you say, it'd be exactly why we need a show like Everwood back. I'd take it over pretty much anything broadcast on A&E today. Get rid of all the garbage Kardashian and TMZ shows, and bring back masterpieces like Everwood.

I completely agree with those two posters. Everwood show is different compared to what we are watching now. And it's not different in a bad way. So even for the purpose to see this type of show again revival makes sense.

Now do I think that it's possible? I am not sure. Greg is into directing these days, Emily has her own show, Chris is busy doing movies. I see the movie option more feasible than show revival to be honest. Unless they do something similar to what Gilmore Girls did - just few episodes to show us how the story progressed for those characters that we grew to love.

I could see a movie or the Gilmore Girls route.

That article did bring up some valid points, especially about Everwood being of a certain time and place, but I still feel that it could work. To be sure, some of the cast members may not come back, but if the key members of the cast came back, it could work.

Thanks for posting the article Michelle and thanks for posting two of the comments in response to that article.
