That's true, it's just sad is all. Even a show like Gilmore Girls, that type of flavor is gone, too.

Reality TV crap has taken over the small screen as well.

Sadly I blame all the people that watch them . If no one was watching them, they won't have that big ratings and the producers won't make them in a bull.

I get that people want to do something that is successful. It's human need. I guess we are the weirdos that don't like the mainstream things.

You are absolutely correct, the dummies that watch the nonsense are the blame. If a consumer didn't exist, a product wouldn't be available. absolutely.

You're right. I honestly feel like Berlanti has neglected his gift in a way, I know that sounds insane but I really feel this way. He should remember his dedicated fans along with the high quality he produced. He should get back to that a little bit. I consider him like an artist, a creator. Right now, he's trying different things but not what makes him whole, not in the area that makes him shine, where his natural talent is showcased. The weirdos of this world need him to get back to his art. LOL

Yeah we are victims of the capitalism. In this world the consumer is the major factor. They produce what is watched.

You have no idea how many Europeans blame Americans when some show that they liked gets cancelled due to low rating. Obviously not all are to blame, but there is some truth in this.

The thing is that the artists usually want also some recognition of their work. They want someone to appreciate it and with mainstream is far easier. It really pains when you do something out of your heart and want to give the public some message and they don't care.

Look Everwood is awesome show and we all saw it. We understood why he did it and we got what he wanted to say. I gotta be honest and say that I don't know any one (in my country) that have watched this show. It's like yes it has message but he can't even make an impact to someone.

Not to mention that even if he does that type of show, the networks won't like it, because they think like business men, not like artists. They care about the rating.

Sad story.

The problem with reality tv is: It's cheap. Or even if it costs some money, it's a lot less than fictional tv series. And if only 1/3 of the viewers of a series would watch, it works for the producers I guess. In Germany, there are so many scripted reality shows, all day long and there are new formats every week or month. It doesn't make sense to watch the US shows on tv anyway, because the really good ones are shown very late or get cancelled soon.

Good points from you. I think Greg now is older and knows better how the business works. He needs a hit from time to time (with Arrow he has a small one - and a big one if you look at CW's usual stuff) and Parenthood wouldn't be in its 4th season (and even a 5th is more than possible) if it wasn't on NBC. And with the fast cancelling of shows, it's super tough.

Great points, you guys.

I mean, just look at how the CW didn't like Everwood. They literally took a show that was already dead in 7th Heaven in favor or taking on Everwood because they knew 7th Heaven was on its last leg and would be done after that final season versus Everwood where they knew might get viewers (according to their expectations) but they hated the flavor of Everwood. Thus, they chucked it. So sad and pathetic.

That's a great point about reality TV being cheap. Networks make a fortune off of that crap.

Why are US shows aired in Europe at bad times?

The great Charles Durning (Eugene Brown), has passed away from natural causes at the age of 89. This saddens me. He was a great character actor. He was always watchable in everything, even if the show or movie wasn't up to snuff. I have seen him in movies and shows my entire life. One of the greats IMO.

In Germany, there are us shows not only in the evening or at prime time like on US networks, they are on every day sometimes in the afternoon or prime time or later, but some really good shows don't get recognition and viewers, commercials and German dubs (horrible, though the quality itself is really good, it's the voices and the different language). DVDs are way better, especially when you don't like to make an appointment to watch a show on this day at this particular time.

Oh, I totally forgot! I honestly can't really remember Charles being on Everwood, he appeared on two episodes within the last 5 episodes of Everwood. I saw that sad news and remembered him as Tommy Gavin's father on Rescue Me. I went through his filmography, I at least have seen him on O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Sting, but don't remember him or maybe I did but don't remember that.

Barry, thanks for the news. Awe, that 's too bad.

LOL Matt, when did Everwood air? Do the ratings matter much in Europe pertaining to American shows?

It saddens me that the man (Charles Durning) passed away...but I hate to say that I didn't enjoy his character (Eugene) on Everwood. I know I'm in the minority here.

Not sure. In the afternoon I think. Ratings do matter. That's why the tv shows that air during the week are mostly the big us hits, CSI stuff and crime stuff and TBBT and stuff like that. But I don't watch TV anymore and care for US ratings more.

Betty, I was kind of indifferent. Why didn't you enjoy his character?

That makes sense. Are the US shows dubbed?

I could not warm up to his nasty personality, and I couldn't stand listening to his voice. I guess I'm not that crazy about the actor. I didn't like him in Rescue Me, either.

Got it.

Wow, he was quite accomplished: Charles Durning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles played Tommy Gavin's father on Rescue Me. What do you espect from that? He did a good job playing that character, so it doesn't matter if you like him or not - and the father wasn't likeable.

Yes, all the stuff on free time is. There are some shows were you could chose between German and English, but only a few at best. Pay tv channels have both I think. It sucks.
