Everwood Fans who are Dawson/Joey & Pacey/Andie Fans of Dawson's Creek #27: No, everyone doesn't hate Dawson. The Ratings Don't Lie!

This is an appreciation thread for Everwood fans who are also Dawson/Joey & Pacey/Andie fans. For those who shipped these pairings, the series once had such great promise, but ended up being one of the most disappointing series to date. TPTB enjoyed manipulating the heart and soul of the old school (seasons 1/2) Dawson's Creek audience, who embraced the premise and the main pairings of the show; Dawson/Joey and Pacey/Andie fans. The first two seasons defined Dawson's Creek. Season 3 came along and the show simply wasn't the same anymore. New showrunner who essentially mocked the premise, destroyed the main pairings, and was basically just fine with dropping the quality in order to make the series his own. We know the drill. Discussing our main pairings, as well frustrations over storylines, writing, TPTB, fandom in general, is all welcome here.

Note: This is not a debate thread with other ships. This thread is strictly for Dawson/Joey & Pacey/Andie fans to appreciate the pairings and discuss aspects of the show, both good and bad. This thread was originally created to celebrate friendships between a couple of regulars on the Everwood board who, back in the day, posted on the Dawson's Creek board and encountered some terrible fan wars and not so great moments. We wanted a safe place to discuss our thoughts here on the Everwood board. That is how this thread was created. Jerry D, our amazing Administrator, and my very good friend, came up with the idea and the rest is history. For those of you who ship other pairings and don't agree with the content of this thread, of course there's the Dawson's Creek board and other threads scattered throughout Fan Forum perfectly designed for you.

Thanks!

Alternate S5 & S6 : He made a solemn promise he would come and visit her. Hell, he even jotted it down in indelible black ink onto the crisp pages of her brand new journal while wearing a big toothy grin on his face, but regardless, it had been months since Pacey had made any contact with Andie. Andie forced herself not to overthink it and chalked it up to life getting in the way, but the smallest embers inside of her heart that yearned for him still despite everything that happened between them started to prickle at the back of her head. Although once the orientation process at Harvard was over and the real work began, Andie’s thoughts of Pacey Witter were sidelined in order to make room for the mountains and mountains of schoolwork she was receiving on a daily basis.

That was until, out of the blue, Pacey literally came sailing back into her life looking tanned, well rested, and even more gorgeous. Andie vowed to never let herself fall back in love with Pacey, she made an ironclad pledge to herself to never stray back into that hornet’s nest, but his soft, warm gaze pointed in her direction had Andie convinced his heart was remembering the way it used to love her.

She was one hundred percent correct in her assumptions.

The laughter between them settled into a deep warmth and easiness, and they talked well into the wee hours of the night and gradually, the intimacy they once coveted as a couple so long ago had returned to their bodies in triplicate. It started with Pacey’s hand brushing up against hers when she handed him a magazine from a convenience store shelf, which then evolved into their hugs becoming longer and more needy each time they touched. Soon enough, Pacey did the unthinkable, and asked Andie a question she never thought she’d hear again in her life from him…

Pacey Witter had asked her out on a date.

At first, they had both agreed to not invest too much of themselves into the date, stating an urge to take things as slow as they could in order to protect themselves from any harmful fallout, but Pacey and Andie’s mutually intense bedroom eyes that screamed “make love to me.” seemed to tell another story altogether. The immense pain of potentially opening up old wounds over how their relationship crumbled in the past fell to the wayside as Pacey and Andie ended up having passionate, raw, soul searing sex in Andie’s shower. Every single iota of mistrust, devastating heartbreak, and bad memories in their past circled its way down the drain.

And as Andie sat by her vanity, drying her hair and watching Pacey getting ready for bed, she smiled to herself. At long last, she finally felt like she could breathe again.

Tony, do you have a breakdown of the ratings? Would love to see the change in overall numbers.

Thanks for the new thread Michelle.

Dawson's Creek was one of the first shows to use The Internet as a marketing tool. The company that produced the show, Columbia TriStar Television, Inc., had a website devoted to the show and something called Dawson's Desktop, which was pretty advanced for its time, where you could click on various icons on Dawson's "Computer Desktop" and find different things, like his interests, his thoughts about Jen and Joey etc., and every week they would continue the story from the week before. Later, they added other Desktops, like Joey's Desktop, Jen's Desktop, Pacey's Desktop, etc., but I didn't bother with the other Desktops as I became more cynical about the show.

The point I'm trying to make was that the show's popularity on The Internet was both a blessing and a curse, because Stupin relied on Internet Polls to find out what storylines and couples were popular, and the Pacey and Joey fans would rig those Internet Polls to make Pacey and Joey seem a lot more popular than they really were.

When I started moderating the Dawson's Creek board here at Fan Forum in 1999, most of the posters were Dawson and Joey fans, but later on, the board was basically invaded by Pacey and Joey fans, and they were a lot more aggressive and meaner than the Dawson and Joey fans, so a lot of the Dawson and Joey fans stopped posting here, and the board became very difficult for me to moderate, and the Pacey and Joey fans actively campaigned to get me removed as a moderator, which didn't happen, but it left a bad taste in my mouth and I no longer post on the Dawson's Creek board here. I stopped moderating that board and this board when I became the Site Administrator in 2003.

I still can’t get over what Pacey and Joey fans attempted to do to you. Those vile idiots. They didn’t win their sick attempt, however.

You said it... in 1999, most posters were Dawson/Joey fans (and I’m assuming Pacey/Andie fans). There you go. This was the representation of the regular non-Internet viewer too. Thus, why the ratings were much higher. Pacey/Joey fans trickled on in eventually when the new Dawson’s Creek show got started and the series was essentially destroyed for the most part.

I think I might pull my hair out if I see anyone generalize that Pacey/Joey fans were or even are the majority. They never were and even now the ratings tell us many of the real fans stopped watching.

I never knew about Dawson’s Desktop until this very moment. Interesting. Yes, the Internet really affected this show, both good and bad. Sadly, it seems more bad.

OK, here it is. I need to explain the drop from season one to season two.

Most series will have a drop from season one to season two. Season one was written as a limited mini-series.

In season one you had a complete story. The trials and tribulations of a group of teens in a small town. The worldly girl from NYC pitted against the girl next door for the affections of a good but naive boy who had expectations that were unworldly. So for many the story was over at the end of season one.

Rankings

Season Timeslot Network Number of episodes Season premiere Season finale TV seasons Rank Viewers
(in millions)
1 Tuesday 9/8c The WB 13 January 20, 1998 May 19, 1998 1997–1998 #121[31] 6.6[31]
2 Wednesday 8/7c 22 October 7, 1998 May 26, 1999 1998–1999 #119[32] 5.4[32]
3 23 September 29, 1999 May 24, 2000 1999–2000 #122 4.0
4 23 October 4, 2000 May 23, 2001 2000–2001 #120 4.1
5 23 October 10, 2001 May 15, 2002 2001–2002 #134[33] 3.9[33]
6 24 October 2, 2002 May 14, 2003 2002–2003 #134 4.0

You can see after the season two drop the viewership of the series remained constant.

Actually the drop from season one to season three is 2.6 million viewers per episode.

Thanks Tony!

Yes, Season One was written as a Mini-Series that was already filmed before the first episode aired, which is why it's superior to all the other seasons, although if we didn't have Season Two, we wouldn't have gotten Pacey and Andie. If I had to do it again, I would have stopped watching the show at the end of Season Two, because once Kevin Williamson left, the show went down the tubes.

Thanks!

Yes, the drop between Seasons 1 and 2 makes sense.

The drop between Seasons 2 and 3 is telling... the biggest drop that never recovered. It might have remained steady in the drop but that's just because those that accepted the terrible quality and entire change of the series stuck around. Many of the regular views who watched the first two seasons bailed.

For me the series doesn't exist past season two.

For me the series was a wrap after a full season 1 plus Pacey/Andy only scenes in season 2. So it’s not even a full two seasons for me. It’s season 1 and some added scenes.

That's exactly how I feel. The only part of Season Two that I liked was Pacey and Andie. I hated the Dawson and Joey parts of it.

Time for another Joey Potter comment.

From Amanda June 10th 2012

Quote:
To me Joey potter was the most arrogant imperfect person n the entire show. First she’s “inlove” with her whole life friend Dawson then after he finally came around.. The bitch dumps him for no reason at all, then they get back together then she dumps him again because poor Dawson found out her dad was drug dealing again? How the fudge is that Dawson’s fault? Then she falls for pacey.. She spends the WHOLE relationship in this weird “I feel sorry for Dawson” stage, which got on my nerves because pacey worshipped her and loved her in a normal love kinda way and she didnt seem to care, everything was just about Dawson and Dawson’s feelings.. She had sex with pacey and she didnt want to tell Dawson because in one way or another she still hoped her and Dawson would end up together and totally pushed away pacey with all her stupid judgments thinking she was perfect and deserved everything.. Then after they broke up she totally seemed fine.. And he was supposed to be”the love of her life” okay nice way to handle it.. She went straight to Dawson and kissed him? And spent season 5 whining about her relationship with him. Like there’s a difference between friendship and love.. She doesn’t seem to comprehend that -.- its like she always had hope for the two of them to re unite and never let Dawson be with anyone else. She was selfish, she spent the entire series confused and hurting everyone who loved her.. Then after pacey started going out with her best friend in $easoN 5 Aubrey or w.e her name was.. Its like she was oblivious to the fact that pacey was the love of her life.. Joey Potter was the worst character I’ve ever seen in any television show
I think this is a very good analogy.

Man, that person is so dead on about Joey. The best comment I ever saw about Joey was from Sars at the new defunct Television Without Pity in her review of Future Tense:

Quote:
She is, in short, the most disgustingly passive, bitchy, self-obsessed example of womanhood available on broadcast television. I loathe everything about her, not least her revolting sense of entitlement which has, against all odds, exceeded even Dawson's. God, I ****ing hate her.

I would have been fine with a season 1 only mini-series. From start to finish, it was high quality. Of course, no Pacey/Andie. But then again, they were destroyed not long after so it’s tough for me to even enjoy what they had knowing what happens next.

Getting both my favorite couples in there the finale of 2 was a cliffhanger. The series ends after two seasons, series finale summing up/playing off of the content... going into the future 10 years, explaining the missing years, showing them coming back together for good as adults.
