No doubt Lindsay probably did have strong feelings for Lucas and in their Tree Hill bubble without Peyton and Brooke there, she could believe that Lucas was really in love with her because that's what he made her believe. But when Peyton came back and it turned everything into a different direction. Lucas couldn't deny that he was still in love with Peyton and that nothing else mattered. He couldn't deny his feelings no matter what lies he told Lindsay. What's really disgusting is that Lucas made it out like Peyton was just another ex girlfriend and she was the reason why he was so unhappy. Then to make matters worse, Lindsay put it out there like Peyton never mattered and she was just the third wheel hanging onto Lucas' every word like a little school girl. The whole story was just stupid after a couple of episodes in Season 5.

Yes, it does. I wonder if it's a case of Michaela McManus being signed for a certain number of episodes. As a result, the storyline dragged. This happened on Everwood with the character of Jake, played by Scott Wolf. Berlanti had Scott Wolf under contract for longer than necessary. Storyline-wise, you could feel it. He was in 36 episodes. Legit, he could have only been in half of those and it would have played out just fine on the screen. He was under contract, The WB probably wanted to get their money's worth, so he stayed for the full 36.
