Beware of the following essay.
Lucas and Peyton gave each other the family the other was lacking. They both filled a whole that was missing in the other. Peyton had just lost the only mother she knew and instead of being a constant in his daughter's life, her father basically used work as an excuse to withdraw from the world. He left this young girl who was basically broken on the inside. She didn't care that Nathan treated her like a pile of crap because she thought she didn't deserve any better. Then along came lucas. Beautiful, Broody, Loving Lucas. A boy who should be a lot more messed up than he actually was but wasn't. He was capable of such great love and that was to Karen's credit. But, he was also lonely and a part of him was seeking that complete family unit. He wanted to save someone in a way that he could never save his mother. She had endured pain at Dan's hands and Lucas could never get past that anger. It's why I love season 4. That whole arc when he is seething at the very idea of his mother forgiving his father was so beautifully done. I especially enjoy that scene where he is just holding Peyton and he is at peace. She gave him peace, a sort of salve over his hidden pain. That is why when he thought she didn't believe in him or love him, it felt like the deepest of rejections. I believe on some level he never fully healed from his father's rejection and that carried over to his romantic relationships.
To the point of the longest diatribe I think I have ever written is that I believe that they healed each other. Together they found peace and that whole family unit that they both craved.
