Everwood – The Stories Left To Tell

Hi everyone! I think the thing that frustrates me the most about the cancellation of Everwood is that there were so many stories left to tell on this wonderful show. A lot of television shows run out of stories to tell, especially if a show focuses one particular group of characters, like say, teenagers in high school in a small town like Dawson’s Creek did. When the Dawson’s Creek characters graduated from high school and moved away from Capeside, something special was lost, and I feel that the show foundered in its two final seasons because it lost much of what made it special, so by the time the show was cancelled, it was well past its prime, and it really didn’t have a lot more stories to tell, and everyone was ready to move on from it, including the actors on the show.

With Everwood, however, there were still a lot more stories to tell, because this show never primarily focused on only the teenage characters, it focused on all of the characters, and it gave equal weight and equal time to some very interesting and diverse main characters. The show also solved the problem of “losing” the teenage characters once they graduated from high school by having them remain in Everwood and either have them go to college nearby, or get a job and still remain home. More importantly, however, the show still featured all of the adult characters and gave them stories of substance and depth, and to me, this show could have gone on indefinitely.

Therefore, I’d like to discuss the directions that this show could have taken next season and in subsequent seasons, so we can all still talk about our favorite show even though the idiots at The Completely Worthless Network cancelled it.

I’ll throw out a few ideas for storylines for next season, but feel free to add your own.

Ephram and Madison: We had read that Ephram was going to get a call from Madison at the end of the Season Finale if the show hadn’t been cancelled, and we wouldn’t have gotten an Ephram and Amy reunion at the end of the episode because of it. What I envision was that Madison was going to tell Ephram that she made a mistake in giving up their child for adoption, and that she wanted his help in trying to get their child back. I don’t think that Ephram would still have romantic feelings for Madison, but I think he would be torn about the possibility of maybe getting to play a role in his child’s life, and I could see him going to help Madison, which would complicate his relationship with Amy.

Harold and Rose: I could see Harold and Rose getting attached to Lily, and then having Cathy come back at the 11th hour saying that she was better now and that she wanted her baby back, and I could see a lot of drama coming from this story.

Andy and Nina: I could see a lot of conflict between Andy, Nina, and Sam, as we know how much Sam loved Jake, and I could see a lot of roadblocks to Andy and Nina getting married because of this.

I hope we can get some good discussions going, because I do feel that there were still a lot of stories left to tell on Everwood, and we have some great posters here to help tell those stories. Thanks!

Jerry> Amazing idea. I'd love to talk about all of those stories.

I think you hit it right with your ideas and I thought the same. The Ephram/Madison thing couldn't be romantic because it has been clearly stated the whole season that Ephram/Amy were still in love with each other.
But, Madison coming home with the baby would have been a real drama for E/A. Of course, Ephram would want to be a part of his child's life and the fact that Amy wouldn't be able to really be a part of it (as she isn't one of the parent) would be really hard for her.
Altough I love seing Ephram growing up and becoming a father, I'm not sure I would have liked to see it mess up with E/A. I don't know.

About Andy/Nina, I think that would have been really fun to see them becoming really involved. This would have been great comedy. I can imagine Andy being a little freaked about living with someone 24/7 after all this time. It would have been a little weird and funny.
Of course, there would have been issues with Sam and as you said, really great drama could have come up of it. I agree.

I think Season ( could have been about Delia also. She's almost the age Amy was when we first met her and I would have loved to see her become a teenager. and dealing with her own drama.

I love this idea, hope it is alright that I join in

Amy: I would have liked to see Amy's storyline with the womens studies major explored more. I have a feeling it was droped mid season when it was made known Everwood might not be picked up but I thought it had real potential.

Amdy/Nina/Sam/Delia family dinamic: I really think this could have been an intresting relationship to explore. Maybe Delia would start acting out, she would no longer be the youngest in the family, couple that with teenage hormones and something was is bound to happen.

Ephram and Madison: Madison returning with the baby, or in the process of getting the baby would certainly add stress to the Amy/Ephram relationship. At this point I don't think anything else could really cause trouble with E/A and every relationship needs to have something going on so I think Maddison would be the best choice

Excellent topic question you posed, Jerry.

I couldn't agree more, there were tons of stories left untold on this show. Certainly we can imagine what can and did happen, but as far as seeing it play out on the screen, sadly, we won't have that opportunity. I firmly believe this show could have gone an at least another couple of seasons and it wouldn't miss beat. That was the beauty of this show.. It was like no other. It remained strong and with high quality from start to finish, never once did it slack off.

This show was all about the true meaning of an ensemble cast. This show played off of the main characters of Andy/Ephram/Amy/Harold, but the supporting characters connected right to them in such a beautiful way where everything just flowed so nicely and it gave a wholesome feel. That was the thing with this show, it was unified, it never felt choppy or disconnected. It was always "a story" first and foremost.

What I find absolutely amazing is comparing this show to others with regards to what happens whenever a young character goes off the college.. Think Creek, Gilmore Girls, for instance. Both shows seemed to lose a little something once this took place. Gilmore Girls maybe not as much but even so, whether I personally liked it (which I pretty much did for the most part), it isn't a coincidence that season 4 Gilmore Girls to many was the weakest season out of them all.. Well, of course, before season 6 certainly took over that spot.

But with Everwood there wasn't even a change in the show whenever they went to college or Ephram moved! You never felt one thing that was missing. This show was so incredibly amazing, there was not one variation from season 3 to season 4. How phenomenal is that? Blows me away.

Okay, getting into a bit of the storylines and what might have happened:

Ephram and Madison: First off, I would have been extremely pissed off if we would have received that cliffhanger finale where Madison was calling Ephram and not because I feel like she would be coming back for a romance with Ephram or anything ridiculous like that. It's because of the knowledge that the Ferris Wheel was probably a no go and the EA reunion was probably a no go as well.

Having said that, if we would have gotten this cliffhanger, I also believe that Madison would be coming back to possibly get the baby back and needing Ephram's help to do so, since she lied on the adoption papers and pretty much lost all of her rights as a result. So my guess is she would need Ephram's help. There is simply no way in any scenario that I believe Berlanti would EVER have revisted an EM romance. That ship had sailed. Ephram telling Amy at the end of season 3 that seeing Madison was like seeing a cousin pretty much sums up how Ephram now views Madison. And even giving Madison a bit of credit (did I say that?) I guarantee that she has moved on as well. It was NEVER going to be about romance for EM. A fork was securely put in that.. It would have been about the baby and Madison needing Ephram's help as a result. Of course they probably would play up this situation causing some drama for EA. No doubt about it. But as far as Madison coming back ultimately causing permanent damage to EA? No way. Drama, yes, but serious complications, no.

Harold and Rose: I could certainly see Cathy coming back and wanting Lily back which would have put Harold/Rose in a tailspin. This story had drama written all over it.

Andy and Nina: I really and truly wish we could have seen the merging of the two families and how this would have affected the individual players within the family. You were certainly already seeing Sam sort of rebellious and wanting Jake in the finale, my guess is due to Sam constantly losing his "father figure" he would have had a difficult time trusting Andy as being the "end all father" and thus, Sam would almost rebel, essentially rejecting Andy before Andy had a chance to reject him.

I also think for as much as Delia and Ephram already love Nina, a small part of them would feel the loss of Julia all the more whenever imagining how things could have been had Julia lived. I think Delia might initially resent that Nina is not Julia and maybe that could have caused some minor problems as well.

Ephram and Amy: I think that ulimately these two, as everyone already knows, were heading towards hitting the milestones together such as eventual marriage, children (after college) and it would have been fascinating to see how both families slowly come to realize more and more that they will eventually merge together as a result. And to really fast forward into the future, how amazing would it be to see Andy/Harold on Ephram/Amy's wedding day officially becoming family? Or Andy/Harold waiting to see their first Grandchild together? That would have been spectacular.

Great responses everyone, and thanks. Michelle, I agree that a small part of Ephram and Delia would still feel the loss of Julia, and I could especially see Delia possibly resenting Nina at times as she goes through her teenage years, but I do feel that Nina would have been a good stepmother for both Ephram and Delia.

We saw Delia just as she turned 13, and I think that there could have been a lot of interesting (and humorous) stories to tell as she started getting interested in boys and dating, and I could definitely see Andy freaking out while Delia went out on her first date, and Delia being embarrassed when she would have her date meet Andy and Ephram. I could see Amy acting like a big sister to Delia and giving her advice (as long as she stays away from that Kosher wine ) and I would have enjoyed watching Delia grow up and become a young woman.

I would have liked to have seen Ephram pursue his dream of becoming a piano teacher, and I would have liked to have seen him interact with other students like he interacted with Kyle, and I would have enjoyed seeing him play the piano, period.

I would have liked to have seen Amy continue her education and see where Women’s Studies would lead her, and I would have liked to have seen her be in a solid romantic relationship with Ephram.

I would have liked to have seen Bright and Hannah going to Colorado A & M, and I would have liked to have seen them continue their friendship, but I still feel that they were mismatched as a romantic couple.

I think that some great drama could have played out with the Harold/Rose adoption story, and I could see Harold talking to Andy about what was going on, and maybe coming to him for advice.

I also would have liked to have seen Andy and Nina adjusting to living together, and I also would have liked to have seen Edna adjusting to living with Harold and Rose.

Sigh. So many great stories left untold.

Great thread topic, Jerry! I can't wait to see the different things people come up with!

I will have to come back with my thoughts later, but this one I TOTALLY agree on. In fact, i really wish they had spent the past few episodes, or past earlier seasons, working on somethign of an Andy/Sam relationship. I forsee rough patches between them....

There really were so many stories left untold..

I think one of my biggest regrets is not knowing what Ephram/Amy/Bright ultimately ended up doing for a living. Yes, it was inferred that Ephram teaching piano was his calling but this early on in life, he could have changed his mind and gone in a different direction in piano all together. Amy, well I was thorougly frustrated that they cut out the womens studies storyline because there was so much potential there. I want to know what Amy ends up getting her college degree in! This will always be something that I will always want to know. The sky's the limit for what she could do. I wanted to see it materialize. Or what about Bright? He mentioned to Hannah that before he got to A&M he was going to figure out what he wanted to do.. I wonder just what he would end up doing? Something in healthcare or maybe teaching physical education? Maybe ending up being a high school football and basketball coach?

Yeah, I feel like we really got the raw end of the stick not knowing what they all ended up ultimately doing for a living. And there were multiple storylines that could have been constructed leading up to their discovery of this.

I will always be curious what Andy ended up doing with his career as well. He started to get back into surgery a bit and then it was sort of a closed subject. I would have liked to have seen him get back into surgery again. Maybe not 100% where his life would be dedicated to it, but still doing it in some fashion. Not that he wasn't a great family doctor because he was. It's just that we saw how his passion for surgery has always been there on some level so I think he would have enjoyed getting back into it.

I really like all your thoughts on Andy/Nina/Delia/Sam. That's the most interesting thing to me for some reason. I mean, it was always Andy/Ephram that I loved watching, but the dynamic of the Andy/Nina relationship right now is just so interesting. I've brought it up before, but I just adore how they're engaged without going on a date, without much kissing, without any sexual contact. They're simply friends and neighbours and that is so interesting to me, to see how they would deal with that aspect. How do they move from that to a couple living under the same roof? That's a major step in their relationship. They suddenly have to rush from being apart and just friends to waking up in the same house, if not the same bed. In a matter of days! That's just insane to me, lol.

Absolutely, buffyannAlex . I imagine a lot of comedy too. Especially Andy trying to be the perfect husband after his mistakes with Julia. I guess Jake tried to do something similar in a way, but I could see it annoying Nina. Especially with Andy famously clumsily messing things up.

Sam is just a really sad story right now. Going from Carl, who he missed so much all the time that it screwed him up. To losing Jake the way he has, gosh, poor kid. Now it's Andy and Nina that have to pick up the pieces. How does Andy deal with a kid that's not going to like him because he wants Jake? Especially when he wants to possibly do the things with him at a younger age that he missed with Ephram as a kid? That's a tough battle right there.

And Edna was a character that left off in an interesting way in the finale. Under the Abbott house, with a baby. But just Debra and Harold under the same roof! Oh the comedy opportunities. But I would love to see Debra trying to deal with Irv's death more. When she broke down at the end of that episode, forget the title at the moment, but I don't think I'll ever get over that. I think Harold could really help her with that. He never got over his Dad's death and resented her, at least for a while, for not mourning. I don't think she'll move on from Irv to someone else, so now there's that mourning that she has never done before. It's a whole new thing. Veddy interesting. Of course, knowing the CW's want for the young demo, that probably would've been kept to a few scenes anyway. Bah.

Ooooh, that's a great though, Wilpen. I was always thinking that Delia would be okay with Nina moving in with what she said about Andy and Nina getting together close to the end of season three. But there's a difference between wanting it and actually seeing it and I think we would see problems with Nina and Delia. The Julia aspect, and also maybe how Nina and Delia have grown apart over the season? That was the whole Jake stuff that did that, and now that that's over and Nina's in the house, I think Nina would want to try and make a new bond with Delia, and Delia might not like how much Nina would be trying to get back into her life. Delia wants to be more independent, as we've seen the past two seasons, and Nina could be a roadblock there.

Yeah...I was thinking Everwood's future today. So there's some rambling thoughts.

Great thread and great thoughts, everyone.

Yeah, for sure, I completely agree with you. Thing is, I feel like Berlanti was putting in the inference that Andy/Nina fell in love so deeply even without sharing the physical intimacy that usual goes hand in hand with that, you know? It makes their emotional connection all the more powerful to me. They fell in love being best friends from a distance, if you will. They pined for each other and yearned to be together at different times more strongly than others during this entire series off and on if you think about it but the beauty of AN is that they still remained friends throughout everything that was going on around them. Their friendship was always in place and functioning as they were falling in love with each other from a distance. I love it, it shows how powerful their connection and feelings truly were for each other. They "just knew" once they could finally be together romantically in every sense of the word, it would work out perfectly and that's the point I think Berlanti was trying to make in the end with AN. We all know they will work out because their emotional connection was so convincing and the physical element that will now be integrated between them will be so natural and make their entire picture complete.

Yeah, there was a ton of potential storyline here. Sam would have to battle through these things, no doubt about it. It would have been nice to see it all take place on the screen.

Oh man this would have been so comedic. LOL

I think it would have been touching and hilarious at the same time. I really feel disappointed that we missed out on seeing this unfold, that's too bad. But I am so happy that Edna and Harold finally were at a place where they weren't afraid to express that they care about each other and as we saw, they finally feel comfortable being in a real mother/son relationship.

Yep, this had such huge potential, I'm so sorry we weren't able to see this. For as much as we all know Delia loves and respects Nina, Julia would have to enter Delia's thoughts as well and as a result, cause some very dramatic and conflicting situations. It would have been so great to see.

Argh. I typed up a bunch of stuff, but then accidentally pressed the back button and it all disappeared when it came back. Here we go again.

Wow. Great thoughts. I had never really thought about it quite that way, but it's very true. Huh. I'm going to have to rewatch some of their scenes with that perspective.

And yeah, I totally agree that it would work out for them. I think that's something I really would've liked to have seen as well. I don't think, other than Rose/Harold, that we saw a relationship that we knew would be together until the rest of the show. We knew Amy/Ephram would get together in the end, for sure. Others, I can't really think of what I thought about them, lol. But, yeah, there won't be any annoying "suspense" about will they/won't they break up, or some annoying triangles or anything like that. They'll have problems, but they'll stay together becuase this is "it" for them.

I explained that much better the first time. Or worse, I don't know.

Absolutely. Although, I think some awkwardness about old habits would be hilarious. But, yeah, that's another parental journey that has been great to watch. They would've had a great bond that I would love to see. Harold is SUCH a great Dad, but I don't think he had all that much of a chance to be a son ever, and it'd be really great to see.

Totally. in many ways, they already acted as a couple for a long time, they're already dealt with their issues like trust. They pratically leaved together for 4 years, Nina taking care of Delia and all. So now, only little daily issues could come between them. They're already married in their mind.

That's such an interesting thought. Absolutely. That would have been very interesting to see them develop this relationship. Afterall, they never add a really chance to do it, apart from work.

I would have liked to see Bright and Hannah and see what would happen with that relationship. If Hannah wantted to give him a second chance or what. Because the WB was so bad with saying when Everwood was on I was able to catch more of this relationship then I did the AE one.
I also would have liked to see what would happen with NA after they get engaged.
I didn't know this show as well as some of you guys but it was very obvious to me this show could have kept going longer and not run out of ideas. Unlike some shows that keep going cause of ratings and end up stinking because of it.
