Episode Discussion Thread: Episode 301-"For Every Action..."

YAY! First Discussion thread of the new season!

From the WB.com

"For Every Action"
Ep. 301
Premieres Monday, September 13, 2004
9 PM EST/8 PM CT

Ephram (Gregory Smith) and Amy (Emily VanCamp) are reunited after a long summer spent apart while Ephram attended Julliard's summer program in New York... but Amy's euphoria is quickly replaced with paranoia after she notices Ephram acting distant. Meanwhile, Andy (Treat Williams) is plagued by guilt over whether he made the right decision concerning Madison's (Sarah Lancaster) pregnancy; and Dr. Abbott (Tom Amandes) befriends the town's newest citizen, Jake Hartman (Scott Wolf, Party of Five), who turns out to be a doctor from California looking to open a new practice in Everwood.
Debra Mooney, John Beasley, Vivien Cardone, Chris Pratt, Stephanie Niznik and Merrilyn Gann also star. Executive producer Rina Mimoun wrote the episode directed by David Petrarca.

I was very impressed with tonight's episode. The acting was amazing, and the plotlines were engrossing. The beginning with the voiceovers for the letters, e-mails, and phone messages was brilliant! I am surprised I haven't seen this sooner. I love that we got the chance to see what happened over the summer. And the song "The Only Living Boy in NY", just perfect. Andy is really shining over everyone else, with the midst of everything going on, he actually took a contrived and overdone polot, and is making it work. I also appreciated conflist between Amy and Ephram in the first episode, and there relationship on the rocks, for the reason before. Ephram's passion is music, and it still is. Unfortuanetly that means Amy is not his passion. Very tragic. Delia shined as well, expressing her frustration over Ephram's attitude. She missed him, he came back, and now she feels pushed away. Also, Scott Wolf was great. I can't wait to see how he settles in, he is a very likeable character. And calling him Hal, that was classic. He is like Andy, from "The Pilot". I loved it. Overrall, I am enhralled and impressed with this season's beginning, and I can only hope the rest of the year is just as captivating. Brava!

And might I add, I loved the new credits. Very creative.

I had really mixed feelings about this episode, as Andy’s guilt about hiding Madison’s pregnancy haunted him and once again threatened his tenuous relationship with his son, and Ephram shut out everyone because his dream of finding success at Julliard fell apart.

I thought it was amusing watching Harold redecorate Andy’s office, but I thought it was wrong for Andy to blow up at Harold like he did, but he obviously had a lot on his mind, as Madison’s letter and the harsh words he received from her roommate deeply disturbed him, and I feel that this whole Madison situation is like a ticking time bomb ready to explode. I can understand why Andy chose to hide the truth from Ephram, but like he himself said, when you try to bury the truth, it has a way of digging itself up, and I expect nothing but misery for everyone involved when Ephram finds out the truth about Madison.

I thought that Ephram was wrong to shut everyone out, and although I could definitely understand his disappointment that his time at Julliard turned out to be a let down, as he apparently failed to make the grade in his summer session, I think that he should have reached out to the people who love and care about him instead of shutting them out, and it particularly chagrined me that he shut Amy out, because she’s the girl of his dreams, and I hope that Greg Berlanti doesn’t make Ephram and Amy into another Dawson and Joey.

Bright, as always, was a hoot, and I especially enjoyed his conversation with Amy.

I could understand Harold’s reluctance to lease his old office, because that office did hold a lot of memories for him, but like Andy told him, your memories do stay with you, whether you move across the street or across the country. I thought it was amusing that Harold unwittingly rented his old office to another doctor, and it’ll be interesting to see how Andy and Harold will react to having competition.

It was amusing to see Delia burn her baseball caps as she begins to become a young lady, but I was particularly stung by Ephram’s callous treatment of her, and I was glad that she called him on it, because like she said, she was waiting for him to come home too.

Overall, I was glad to see the start of a new season of Everwood, but this episode seemed rather gloomy and a little disappointing.

I was so mad at Ephram for telling Amy he needed time. HE JUST came back from NYC. He had 10 weeks of time. I know he was upset, but that's when you need your friends/family the most.

I thought for sure that letter he was holding was from Madison. If he was so upset about failing, think about how he will act when he finds out about the baby.

I loved Scott Wolf. He's such a doll. I laughed when he poured all that sugar in his coffee.

Jerry D- I agree. I hope Amy/Ephram don't turn into Dawson/Joey.

I loved Delia buring her hats. I felt sorry for her when Ephram yelled at her. Poor thing.

I was so happy to see next weeks preview. I breathed a sigh of relief when Ephram told Amy he needed her.

I can't wait for a brand new season.

i just watched the show and read everybodys thoughts about the show it is funny how everyone seems to like the same moments. i also loved when scott poured all that sugar into the coffee. i wonder if their will be a relationship between jake/scott and nina the way he looked at her?

i loved that scott wolf came to the show he looks like he will give a little comic relief just as bright/chris does also. i was a little disappointed they didn't give bright much of a storyline i hope in the coming episodes he will be more a top storyline instead of going on the backburner.

i was also thinking as everyone else said that hopefully amy and ephram wont become a dawson and joey thing i mean we have already waited two seasons which is more than dawson and joey.

if ephram does find out about madison being pregnant i really can't imagine how much that is going to affect him and amy i mean u already got the feeling he feels way overwhelmed with everything and to add a child that is really going to kill their relationship. although madison might have had an abortion though not sure if they would go that route though. i guess we will have to see.

overall i really enjoyed the episode but i definitely did not want it to end with ephram needing time (hmm where have we heard that before) lol. but the next episode gave me hope ok i am done now and thanx to whoever reads my post

I agree with you Jerry but sadly I think it may turn out to be a Dawson/Joey type thing with back and fourth will they/ wont they stuff. The Madison thing without question is a time bomb and when it comes out Andy is really going to have to deal with his actions and being someone who was not for his decision I expect Ephram to really explode when it comes out. I think Scott Wolf is going to be a good addition to Everwood. On a whole I thought tonight was alright but I really am just happy to see Everwood back.

Well as a former hard core dawson/joey fan I can firmly say this is not a case of duplication. They both want to be at that place of trying and giving it a go. Or at least I though that until tonight? The go find yourself and get all the anwsers plot is (thought this was a cheap excuse for Ephram's behaviour), well, very d/j, but beyond that you got nothing. I think what I enjoy most about a/e is that you get this feeling that every moment, every scene together or apart has a divine purpose. It's distinctive to their story as a couple or as individuals. With d/j I always felt like I was being had, like the writers were plotting against d/j, rather than trying to create the best possible story. I never felt like their stories outside of each other, except for a few cases, was half of what it could or should of been. I'm not looking for a/e to be together and happy till the shows end. I'm just looking to watch a story that continues to be entertaining and engaging, and so far that seems to be what I'm doing.

I may be out of the norm here, but I think it's going to take some getting used on the part of scott wolf. There was something about him that didn't quite fit in. As for the rest, kind of have to take Jerry's side that it seemed ho-hum. Plus I felt like something was off the whole time. Like it was lacking some of Everwood's tradtional beauty. I did like opening though. Thought that was well done.

I liked the episode, although I did miss the first 19 minutes including the new opening credits as well as the voiceover I wasnt sure if I'd missed anything pertinent I thought it was good the way they had Ephram being very shady and the audience as well as the characters wondering what was bothering him. I knew it had to be something other than Madison because he'd be way more distraught over something like that. I also thought that at the end of the episode we'd see his cell phone ring with Madisons name on it and have to wait until the next episode to see what happens but I have a feeling it will be a long time until Ephram finds out about this. Perhaps at the end of the season when Madison shows up with a 9 month old or the news that she aborted his baby, which I personally think will be the case, I cant see them giving Ephram a baby.

Im still mad at Andy for not telling Ephram, I always liked Andy but he really ticked me off in the finale last year and I definitely carried that into this premiere, I think Madisons roommate was right, he wasnt checking up on Madison solely to see that she was okay, it was to keep tabs on her. Does he not comprehend that this is his grandchild?

On to other things, Bright? Love him. Delia? Love her. Jake, Ill have to give some more time, I definitely, definitely see something happening with he and Nina although he does seem a LOT younger than I think his character is meant to be, he seems more of a frat boy to me than a doctor. But now there's 3 doctors in Everwood? And all on the same block? Isnt that kind of overkill? The space may have been perfect for Jake but dude, the location is sooooo wrong, you'd think he'd see that.

Ephram and Amy were cute in the beginning when they were cuddling, they seem to have a nice chemistry going and Amy seems back to the Amy I like, the less angsty one but I honestly dont see them being another Dawson and Joey, I think there are so many DC people on the Everwood staff that they'd have learned from that, ahem, train wreck. Plus I kind of like the way Amy reacted, she didnt act slighted, she was upset but calm and rational. Although I wouldve preferred Ephram to tell Amy his fears and then tell Amy that he wants her to tell him that everything will be fine and they'll work through it, I dont think she shouldve let him go without allaying his fears but Im sure itll all work out, they're "splitting" or taking time apart over legitimate things, nothing like Dawson and Joey in my opinion. I dont believe that the reason they're having problems is a cheap excuse for "trying to find yourself" at all, EPhram was worried that the amount of time it would take for him to practice would leave him with less than enough time to treat his girlfriend correctly which in the long run, could create a problem in itself with a much messier and painful outcome and EPhram cares far too much for Amy to let that happen. I think Ephram was being smart, plus its no biggie, because we all know Ephram and Amy will get their chance.

I think thats pretty much it. A nice establishing episode with a lot of stories to be picked up on.

But did anyone else find it weird that Dr. Abbott wasnt at least a little concerned that his daughter was dating someone that knocked up his last girlfriend and had no clue about it?

Episode was well acted and written as usual. And I liked that they did away with the voice-over prologue and epilogue. Not sure it would have fit well with the episode.

1) I see a potential parallel between Andy and Ephraim. Andy was so obsessed with what he wanted to do that he pushed everyone away. Ephraim seems at risk of doing that with Amy, Delia, and his father. Andy compliments Ephraim for being as obsessive as he used to be but perhaps needs to warn him of the pitfalls.

2) That new rec room has more than just a piano with a computer, couch, and other amenities. Might even become his new impregnation room.

3) What I found most curious wasnt Andy's reaction to the Madison pregnancy but Harold's. He expressed very little alarm that the boyfriend of his daughter (who even after the birth control pills thing he probably still holds out hope is still a virgin) had gotten a girl pregnant.

His main concern was that she might be upset and from the preview that it would damage their "love" for each other. I'd think that he would want his daughter to know what happened so that she'd be entering the relationship with her eyes wide open. And that he'd want her to know now to avoid having her hurt even more later.

I understand Andy's motivation. He doesnt want his son to have to deal with the responsibilities of teenage pregnancy and it will given him time to get his life in order. I can understand Harold not spilling the news immediately since Andy did come to him as a friend. What I don't understnad is Harold not urging Andy to come clean for the sakes of Amy who will be REALLY devastated if Dr Vegas gets cancelled and Madison comes back to town with a baby.

4) Seeing Scott Wolf makes me nervous. I expect him to start lecturing everyone about the "lessons" he learned at AA. And for his brother to come out and moan, "I've got cancer!" And a sister that appears and whine, "Waaaaa!! Everyone is neglecting me!"

I definitely found that weird that Harold didn't seem concerned about that Kim, and I wouldn't be happy at all if my daughter was dating a guy who had knocked up his last girlfriend period!

Side note: It's great to see some familiar names from the Dawson's Creek board posting over here!

I know that things between Ephram and Amy arent running very smoothly right now but am I the only one who thinks that EPhram is being smart? Im surprised that people are saying that Ephram is using cheap excuses or becoming too self involved, he's trying to achieve his dream and he's afraid that while he does that he'll end up alienating someone he loves and he's trying to avoid that. I dont see what so cheap or self involved about that.

I'm glad this show is back on. This season looks like it will be another good one. I just hope they don't focus too much on the Madison pregancy thing, it might drag the show down too much.

I don't think that what Ephram did was cheap or self-involved, Kim, but I do feel that he was wrong to shut Amy out. Amy seems like a very understanding person, and I think that she would understand that he needs to concentrate on practicing, but I think that he can do that and still find time to be with her.

Raja, you made an excellent point when you said that Andy compliments Ephraim for being as obsessive as he used to be but perhaps needs to warn him of the pitfalls, because it's true. Andy's obsession with his profession cost him his family until tragedy intervened, and the same thing could definitely happen to Ephram.

pace and jo, I didn't know you watched Everwood. I really enjoyed this episode. I really like this show. I never watched the first season. I watched all of the second season. I agree that Ephram was just making excuses. He can have his piano thing and date Amy at the same time. I do agree that Harold was kind of nonchalant about Madison's pregnancy. I think Scott Wolf is good to look at, but I think he is an ok actor. I really don't know if he is going to click with the Everwood folks. Maybe, he will.

I'll third this! Not that I feel he was soley responsible for "knocking her up" (it takes two to tango, as the old saying goes), but it bothered me that Harold didn't even get huffed and puffed as he usually does. Isn't it a score in his direction to find something, a negative influence, a personal flaw in the Brown family? We say the way he reacted when he found out that Andy gave Amy the pill. I'm not trying to say Ephram deserves a bad wrap, because I believe if Ephram knew he would step up to the best of his abilities. I just think we saw a missing part of Harold's character.
