Episode Discussion: Ep #316- "A Mountain Town"

Feeling conflicted over the recent turn of events and not willing to jeopardize Ephram's (Gregory Smith) Julliard audition, an angst-filled Amy (Emily VanCamp) tells Ephram that he should take Andy (Treat Williams) to New York instead of her. In New York, Andy struggles with memories of his former life and the desire to tell Ephram the truth about Madison (Sarah Lancaster). Fate plays a hand when Ephram runs into Madison in Manhattan and they make plans to see each other, causing Andy to take matters into his own hands.

Debra Mooney, John Beasley, Vivien Cardone, Chris Pratt, Stephanie Niznik, Merrilyn Gann and Tom Amandes also star. Michael Green wrote the episode directed by Michael Schultz.

YAY for Michael Green, the season 1 vet, writing this episode. I love this guy as he gave us some outstanding season 1 episodes. Probably my favorite episode, ever.. Is There a Doctor in the House? That episode was perfection. One of the best exchanges between E/A, ever...

Amy: I thought New York had everything?
Ephram: Just about.

And the intense looks between them after that exchange melted my heart. OMG, that was incredible stuff. That entire episode was all about beauty. Not just with E/A.. With all the other storylines, also.

He also wrote Deer God, Snow Job, The Miracle of Everwood as well as had a part in the fabulous, Home.

I was comforted whenever hearing that Green was writing #316 because he has proven to be an outstanding writer and is definitely one of the season one vets. This gives me hope that with his knowledge, he wrote this episode while staying true to what Everwood is all about as he will be guided by his season 1 roots.

I'm not really a fan of Madison or M/E or that whole storyline, but I'm looking forward to this ep. Mainly because I'm sure it will be superbly written.

Once again, I'm not a spoiler reader, but it seems obvious from the trailer and the episode description that Ephram is going to encounter Madison and big things relative to Babygate and Julliard are going to happen. Having had three years to think about how to play out the Julliard story and one year to imagine how to create the "big moment" of Babygate, the writers decide to have both plot lines hinge on a chance meeting in a city of twenty million people? Isn't that a little weak?
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the drama will be compelling, but the chances of someone visiting New York for a few days and bumping into a particular person, who they have no idea is within a thousand miles of there, have to be about a gazillion to one. I guess I expected more.
Maybe I'm just being crabby because I know I'm not going to like what happens Monday night. But, still......

LOL. Actually, if what I read is true, Sarah Lancaster had to be in NYC for something else work related, and that's the main reason why they decided to have all this take place in NYC. In all actuality, they are lucky to have Sarah available for whenever they needed her, so I bet they were willing to accomodate her, as they should have.

Cannot wait for the episode!

Wilpen - I wanted to tell you this, but forgot. I like that your the mod here, but I know you love E/A ... but, what I like about you is you know that it isn't the "E/A show", you appreciate the show for everything it is. And that's rare on FF these days, with shows like OTH and them all obsessed with Nathan/Haley and having that affect them watching the show. What's great about Everwood is, even if E/A broke up ... you'd still watch. There not the only reason to tune in, they're one of many.

ALLSTAR, thanks so much for your very kind words. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I think Everwood is in such a unique class of its own because if you genuinely love the show, you end up caring about every character, no matter what transpires with them. You just grow to love the characters so much, that you really have no choice. I mean, for as much as I dislike Andy right now, I still care about the guy. I still yearn to have him get back on track. I would never give up on Andy because I care. The more he does these insanely dense things, the more I crave for him to see the light. Instead of loathing him and giving up, I do the opposite because I want Andy to change. Because I care about Andy. And you're right.. With E/A.. I can't say that I will be shouting out YAY's while seeing these two break up, which, lets face it, they are bound to break up once, probably even more than once, before the show ends.. I will be saddened, but there is no way I could ever ditch this show.. Even with E/M.. Sure, I don't ship E/M, but quite honestly, whenever they broke up, I cried! I really did. I appreciated what they had and enjoyed their time together. Even though I prefer Ephram with Amy, I still saw many outstanding things in E/M that I enjoyed. Back to E/A.. E/A are a big part of why I love Everwood, but certainly not anywhere close to being the only part of why I love this fabulous show. This show is beyond multi-dimensional. In a class of its own.. Berlanti & Co. made you fall in love with this show in its entirety.. Through thick and thin, you are devoted. That's all about creating something special.

Exactly. Like I said ... it's very rare these days to see a show being watched for "the show" and not the "it couple".

ALLSTAR.. I forgot to mention that one of the main reasons I have basically given up on OTH and barely watch now, is because of the shallowness of that show. It got so over the top that I honestly found myself more frustrated by the lack of depth than really enjoying it. I barely tune in anymore.

The O.C. can be quite trashy and off the wall, but at least from time to time they throw signs of depth and continuity in it. Certainly not anywhere near Everwood's quality, but just that minimal amount, even if it happens infrequently, is enough to keep me tuned in.

Wilpen - I'm actually enjoying OTH more then The OC this year ... but I see your point. But, these shows can't even hold a candle to Everwood. This show is like ... what Treat Williams said on the S1 dvd ... a Norman Rockwell painting come to life. He said something like ... how people waited for Charles Dickens novels, is how we wait for episodes. And it's true. Were amazed each week (with the exception of ... Everwood Confidential, )

Sidenote: Wilpen when you copy the ep descriptions, you always keep it as is, and theres the "trailer" and no link. It's cute.

I'm hoping that Green will keep the goodness of the show in this episode. I'm really curious to see the effect/affect that having the episode and events transpire in New York will have. And what could haunt Andy that would have something to do with Ephram and the baby issue? Do you think it has to do with being close to Julia and he wonders what she would have done or do you think he also has a secret in his past? As scared and dreading the revelation of the baby, i'm also looking forward to this episode.

ALLSTAR.. You're absolutely right.. These shows cannot hold a candle to Everwood.. Not even close. LOL about Everwood Confidential. I think Berlanti needed to create that one to show that he was at least human.

LOL about the trailer/linkage. I didn't even notice that! I have been in such a habitual mode of pasting it over here, and doing it the same way each time, that I never noticed. Hey, I just might continue on with my unique way, anyway.

Maria.. I think it could either way with Andy.. But something tells me that Julia could have something to do with why he wants to tell Ephram. Being back in The City and having the memories all come flooding back to him, I bet he wants to do right by Julia and that would be to make things right with Ephram and come clean about everything.

i don't think people are giving up OTH just because Nathan/Haley broke up, but they're upset with the whole show. The only thing i liked about this show since season 2 was Nathan/Haley, and since they screwed that up, they have nothing left. While Everwood have a lot more to offer besides E/A.
