Yeah. I asked this why again? Because you stimulated my mind based on your cute, "So tell me about Halloween" at which time I was my sarcastic self responding with, "What's to tell, it's tonight?" Heh. Of course following this conversation my brain got rolling with the thoughts, wondering about it in a deeper sense since it's what I do.

ETA: So in reading the site further the specific origin is Ireland:

Quote:
In Ireland, where Halloween originated, the day is still celebrated much as it is in the United States.
Also, the fireworks bit in Canada and possibly where it comes from... in England they did go with fireworks way back in the day so I wonder if it's an English/Canadian connection with the fireworks.

Even if I might sound like a freak now... I'm watching someting called "Halloweentown II: Halloweentown High" right now... because it mainly stars Peak County High School.... and Colin's father... and one of Amy's friends... oh, I miss Everwood...

Alex, the most talented vidder in the entire world... LOL. Did I butter you up enough? I was kidding about only going out if Michelle was... well sort of. But I have been good! You have to admit!

I also love the information on Halloween! I had no clue about Ireland or anything about this holiday minus LOVING IT! I went to a party last night and got a little too drunk for my liking since I have a killer headache at the moment but it was fun at the time so no complaints overall.

Lol. Erin, your teasing Alex might be a dead end so...

Sorry about your hangover. Where did you go last night? I know there were three parties that I deliberately avoided so I am wondering if you went to 1 out of the 3 that I didn't attend. Lol.

I realized this but in a delayed manner.

LOL! Definitely one you deliberately avoided because some of your friends were there, hee. Carrie's place. It got pretty insane with the quarter playing since we were not using beer, we were using straight vodka. Most of your friends did not participate, it was more my crew. We watched the hockey game and Greg, who is quite taken by you shouted out, "Where's Michelle! We would watch hockey together!" He seemed sad you were gone since you two would have been the only ones not drinking and he finds you absolutely fantastic because of your hockey love for a girl that is rarrrrrrrrrrre as can be.

As the maybe ONLY British person here I can tell you that we do not do fireworks on Halloween.

I'm going to reveal my age now, I'm the wrong side of 30 and when we were children no one really did Halloween. We didn't trick or treat and it wasn't really celebrated.

But we seem to have been invaded by the American enthusiasm for it and it is a really big deal. We have parties and children trick or treat but usually with an adult in tow for safety

My two boys are 6 and 3 so they don't go trick or treating but dress up (wizards this year) and they take cauldrons filled with chocolates and sweets to the door. People seem to make a huge effort although these days costumes are readily available in our supermarkets (that place you get food from) We have gone from our supermarkets just providing food into mini Walmarts where you can get lots of things.

Halloween is still only celebrated by those with children so you decorate your house to indicate you are happy for someone dressed as the devil to ring your doorbell. There are still those who turn all the lights out and hide in the dark.

Fireworks wise, we wait until Bonfire Night on 5th November and let loose! They have increased the firework buying age to alleviate the teens buying them and we are only allowed to set them off until a certain time which is extended on Bonfire Night, New Year and Chinese New Year.

Clearly being British we can only tolerate whooping and fun in small doses, it messes with our constitutions if we are too happy

Here endeth the British take on Halloween

Good God you guys played quarters with straight vodka? No wonder you're with a hangover!

Yes, I know Greg, yes he is the only sane one who likes hockey and hates booze. JK!

Though he does hate liquor about as much as I do which is pretty cool, heh.

ETA: sparklestar, on the site it said the Brits used to do fireworks but we're talking a longgggg time ago and maybe it's not accurate, but the time period they were talking about was the time period without televisions, Lol, not in the present. Thanks for your post! Very interesting!

Yes, the vodka was insanity, I have to say.

Greg wanted his hockey partner there last night, indeed!

I also had no idea the influence that Americans would have on England regarding Halloween. That's very interesting. I would think it would be the other way around but I was wrong.

And perhaps as an extension of the Brits getting the Americans' love of Halloween or just straight from the Americans, New Zealand has also recently adopted a love for Halloween. Well, love might be a bit extreme.

Really, dude? Very interesting. Alex and I were just talking about this about an hour ago and why the American influence is so large. I am naive about it is what we have decided because I don't see it! I'm with Erin... it's something I don't totally understand but I think Alex's explanations have helped the cause, heh.

What do they do in New Zealand?

Believe it or not..though the years I have had students who are forbidden to participate in any Halloween activities which include movies (sometimes we watch movies like "Hokus Pokus"), wearing any costumes, etc. Their parents are religious(not sure which religion) and believe all of this hoopla is Pagan and related to the Devil.

Erin, I believe any guy who is a hockey fan is completely fascinated by Michelle because you hit it... she's a rare breed to be this intense about the game of hockey and it's a guys dream.

I also think it's ridiculous that some are against Halloween. Wow. I don't remotely understand that. How do you handle that as educators, Betty?

I think the American influence has come from Sky tv (satelite TV) which has become the norm in the UK.

Previously we had 4 TV chanels (I know weep for me) when I was a kid in the 1980's we got another chanel in the mid 80's, whoooo hoooo. Then in the early 90's we got Sky TV which had The Simpsons etc.

Over the past decade we have been deluged with American TV shows (Everwood being one) and I don't know how it works in the rest of the world but we are forced to pay a TV license that covers 2 channels BBC1 and BBC2 as they have NO ADVERTS (does everyone else call them commercials?) whether we want the chanels or not.

The TV license money doesn't pay enough for them to make many quality programs, there are some. So to compete the other chanels with adverts import lots like Greys Anatomy, Lost, Flashforward, Everwood, Veronica Mars, Friends, The Simpsons etc so I think we have been influenced by all of this especially our children.

Can't drag mine away from Ben 10!

They pretty much do what sparklestar has said, Michelle. NZ is very much like the British in a lot of ways

Also, yeah, I've heard of some kids not being allowed to partake in Halloween. For instance, I think my cousins don't let their children celebrate Halloween though I think it is so they won't eat candy. Not sure if it is more than that, but I certainly have heard of that happening.

The wheel that squeaks usually gets its way. We had a real wishy washy Principal who when reading the parents letters (I think there were 2!!) forbade us from showing any movies.
So, usually the way educators handle stuff like this is to cow tow to parents.
