2021-2023 Everwood Rewatch: Episode 1.10 - Is There a Doctor in the House?
 

I watched the episode yesterday. I couldn’t wait. :lol:

I love Andy's epiphany about pop tarts really just being cookies.

Repeating what I said in 1.9, Jacob is annoying and entirely out of line. I can't believe Ephram is dumb enough to go along with it either. How rude of Jacob to come into Andy's home, attempting to take Ephram back to NYC with them. He strolls into the kitchen, Andy's kitchen, in front of his very own granddaughter who is witnessing all of this, all excited that Ephram's old school will take him back. It is absolutely ridiculous. Just like Ephram and Madison put Delia through unnecessary stress and tension in Season 2, in Season 1 her very own brother and grandfather are doing the same thing during these back-to-back episodes. The poor girl loses her mom, has to adjust in a new environment, sees her father and brother fighting all the time while grieving, wasn’t this enough? I guess not since her brother and grandfather needed to upset her even more. Seriously, poor Delia.

Edna not loving her birthday is hilarious. Everwood is perfection balancing drama and comedy.

It is very telling how Andy runs to Nina when he has issues. More and more, you see these two growing closer. I love the slow burn.

Bright loving SpongeBob makes me like Bright so much. LOL.

Harold getting a kick out of the birthday party for Edna is hilarious.

Ephram really bothered me in this episode concerning Andy. I don't like how Ephram interrupts Andy when he was trying to talk to him before the party about NYC. Ephram was rude and disrespectful. This goes beyond being a teen as if it’s an excuse. That is your father. You do not talk through him or dictate when you discuss something, Ephram. You are the boy, not a wise, mature adult. I don't like this at all. It makes me cringe. Andy is far from a perfect father but Andy is going through internal hell over Ephram possibly going back to NYC. Deep down Ephram understands this, yet he is still a disrespectful brat to him before the party.

Delia is so cute answering the door for the Abbott's and her crush on Bright is adorable.

Amy tries so hard to make up with Ephram and he won't bite right away. So cute how much she cares. I love Ephram/Amy tension. I love it, I eat it up. Great moments when there's tension in this episode. So much chemistry flying around everywhere. I’ve never seen better chemistry between a pairing... Greg and Emily, wins the award easily.

I have always found this episode to be "the episode" for the two main romantic pairings, Ephram/Amy & Andy/Nina. Notice what goes on with the two pairings at the party... huge, enormous, massive parallel taking place. You have both pairings fully acting like, well, "pairings" and you see it plain as day. Berlanti made such a special point of making it clear in this very episode these were his two pairings and they were ending up together. Thank you, Berlanti, for reassuring the audience that they would be endgame.

I am just astounded over Jacob and Ruth thinking it would be okay to bring Ephram back to NYC. They both have rocks for brains. Yes, the best plan is ripping Ephram away from his father and sister. What about Delia again? Are they not thinking of how much pain she'd be in if she wasn't living with her brother? This situation is so dumb, it really is. Jacob and Ruth are wrong and annoying, Ephram is ridiculous for even threatening to leave, especially since he's only upset over the girl he is falling in love with in Amy. Crazy, stupid situation.

Oh Ephram, you are not cool in this episode at all. You fight and yell and carry on, ruining a party. Andy wanted to talk about NYC before the party but Ephram dictated it would not happen and now during the party when Andy wisely said they would talk about things when Ephram has calmed down, Ephram only gets more heated up and causes drama and loudness in front of everyone. The only good thing about this moment was Berlanti making it a point to show the Andy/Ephram fight with Nina/Amy looking at them at the same time next to each other near the stairs. Once again, Berlanti was showing in bright colors that there's an Ephram/Amy and Andy/Nina romantic endgame parallel. Delia finding out during the fight that her brother might be leaving was not fun, though. I will say it again, poor Delia.

I love Andy and Harold working together figuring out the Bright situation.

Delia telling Ephram he's not too big, he fits in Everwood was so adorable and so wise. Amazing how the little girl who shouldn't know anything knows absolutely everything.

Andy/Nina are remarkable. Nina, you are so good for Andy. They are so great for each other. I love when Nina tells him he's being an idiot. Nina's speech about there lacking dignity in being a parent is precious. Stephanie knocked this scene out of the park.

Oh, the perfect Ephram and Amy scene outside in the snow. Notice how the scenes go... Andy/Nina scene with Nina helping Andy, followed by the Ephram/Amy scene with Amy helping Ephram. Berlanti was genius showing us the two endgame pairings in such a distinct way.

The Ephram/Amy snow scene is just gorgeous. Amy is so kind, loving and caring. She even asks Ephram if she is allowed to sit next to him and notice Ephram quickly tries to wipe the snow so Amy wouldn’t get wet. Amy telling Ephram of course she would have an opinion about him leaving in such a blunt way was profound. See, here Ephram admits to Amy this is why he wanted to go home to NYC... Amy. This scene is crystal clear for Ephram, it was all about Amy. You see that in 1.9 but you really see it 100% in 1.10 during this snow scene. He is upset over her and says as much in this scene. I love how comforting and reassuring Amy is with Ephram. She apologized to him. Also, notice how she mentions Colin and then in the very next breath, she nervously asks Ephram if he's really going to go back to NYC. This is showing how her mind transitions from Colin to Ephram. She knows deep down Colin is the past, Ephram is her present and future. I love how she tells Ephram that Evewood has really good snow. Her pitch to keep him in Everwood, awe. Their intense eye contact... incredible. Chemistry is flying everywhere. They are so cute. What a pairing and love story.

I love how Andy demands to talk to Jacob. Finally. It's about time he yells at that annoying idiot. Jacob is such an ass. He tells Andy he's only a half a person? What a prick.

Poor Bright. I love seeing his father and grandmother so concerned.

Adorable Amy/Delia scene. Amy seriously rocks in this episode. She's saving, comforting Ephram, comforting his sister who is scared and worried. This scene between Amy and Delia is just beautiful. I love how honest Delia is when Amy's asks her if she is okay and she says she doesn't know. This shows how much Delia immediately trusts Amy. I love it. I love them.

Harold telling Bright that story while Andy operates is so adorable. Harold stroking his hair is so touching.

Andy's speech to Ephram (Nina wrote it) is amazing. It is so perfect. So, so perfect.

Edna/Bright/Delia in the hospital = adorable.

The famous scene... Amy takes off Ephram's ear thingys. I love how she spins around in the chair acting like she didn't do it. So, so cute. There's Amy apologizing to Ephram once again. More adorable. Amy is so excited when Ephram tells her he is staying. I love it.

The eye contact, the amazing eye contact. Look at how Amy just lingers looking at Ephram after he says that line. She is gazing at him, she knows he's staying for her, for them, she loves it so much.

To me... the snow in this episode was SPIRITUAL and essentially represented Julia.

Snow is everywhere in this episode... snow was Julia in this episode. Snow also represents love, togetherness, enduring, with peace and security. Man, I love Everwood.

It’s all about the little things:

- Irv hiding behind his newspaper when Edna was storming around the diner.

- Bright: Just reach in there and shake the velociraptor right in her cage!

- Nina: On a scale of one to ten, how do you like your honesty? Because I want to tell you I think you're an idiot, and I'm not sure how much to sugarcoat it.

- "You're huge" starts Delia's cute crush on Bright.

Foreshadowing

Andy telling Bright during his surgery he’d love to hear more about his Aunt Linda. THIS early on, Berlanti had Season 2 Linda in place. It blows me away.

Last Thoughts

This is a classic episode. Acting is superb, chemistry is flowing. Storylines and characters/certain pairings were flowing together as one. We also get to see a ton of rarely seen pairings. Amy and Delia, Bright and Edna, Harold and Rose even saying anything to Delia, Andy and Bright, along with the Abbott’s entering the Brown house for the very first time.

Does Ruth really believe that silence is approval? That Andy isn't mad? Or is she in on it with her husband? I have to believe it's the latter, because she should know that Andy likes to talk, and his silence isn't approval in anyway whatsoever. I think the scene between her and Andy in the kitchen makes it clear that she had ulterior motives with Ephram with that story.

Jacob's BS about Ephram seeing through Andy, seeing that he has no substance, is so not true. I wanted to punch Jacob in the face during his irritating screen presence.

I mentioned I had some issues with Ephram in this one. It’s kind of interesting that Andy’s ability as a father is always in question. Well, what about Ephram’s ability to be a decent brother and son? He doesn't give his dad a chance and his sister always witnesses his angry outbursts and threats of leaving. Ephram needs to take some responsibility for his bad behavior too.

I love the Ephram/Andy conversation in the kitchen. One of their best, and Treat's delivery showing Andy’s love for his son and his desperate need to have him stay with the family is pure brilliance.

Andy/Nina & Ephram/Amy endgame parallel is everything. :love:

What a classic Everwood episode.

Anything that talks about Snow is significant. Such a Spiritual episode. Just beautiful.

I finally got a chance to watch the episode!! One of the best episodes of the series...

My thoughts....


Jacob is just taking over Ephram's parenting....as if Andy is not even there. What nerve! :mad:

Edna...she so often irritates me. I don't care if she doesn't like that it's her Birthday...there is no reason for her to act like this. You're not in the army anymore, Edna. Stop bossing people around!

I love that Andy feels so comfortable visiting Nina. She's so good for him..and he for her.

I love the way that Bright teases Amy. "I'm Amy and I have perfect skin." :lol:

Harold, Ephram does not have Tuberculosis nor is he a future felon... Would you cut him some slack!?!

Ephram's grandparents do make him smile. I have to give them credit for that.

Here comes the Chunky snow!! :love:

Ephram.....talk to your dad. He's suffering!!

Bright really is sick. Believe him, Harold!

And he plays the piano. Can Jacob be any more perfect? :irked:

Delia is adorable! She's wearing her formal baseball cap. :lol: Love her first meeting with Bright...the Admiration begins! Enough for Delia to remove her baseball cap. LOL

I'd love to know where all these guests came from. lol

Poor Andy It's really tough watching how well your son bonds with his grandfather when he can't even talk to you. :(

I love watching Delia and Bright conversing. She's going to bring him tea. Sooooooooo Sweet.

I wonder why Bright doesn't care for Edna. Is it her manner and lack of sensitivity?

Come on, Ephram! Don't make a scene! Your dad has a right to talk to you. Ok...Ephram....now you need to stop talking!

Ephram: I miss having friends I can trust.
Amy felt that like a punch in the gut.

This is the first time Delia is hearing that Ephram is leaving. Seems to be a pattern, because the second time she hears news like this is the end of season 3. Poor Delia is always the last to know! :(

I'm not sure what Ephram is looking for here. Does he want Andy to make him stay or does he want Andy to let him go?

Irv is the only plow in this town?? Colorado has only one plow? Colorado???

Snow stuff....how the heck is Andy supposed to know this?? He does need an Everwood rule book.

Poor Delia...such an innocent in all of this. I wish Ephram would think about her more and not just himself. Delia is such a trouper and is always expected to roll with the punches.

Listen to Nina. She gives great advice. Andy is thinking about Ephram's happiness a little too much. He needs to give himself more credit as a parent and think of himself more.

One of my favorite scenes....the porch bench. :love: Amy has a lot of responsibility affecting Ephram's moods like that.She understands now that she needs to be more careful with them. It's so obvious that Amy does not want Ephram to leave..

Good...you're the parent, Andy. Put your foot down and tell Jacob how you feel....you have that right! What Jacob is saying is beyond cruel. Terrible. :mad:

Bright's appendix!! The look on Harold face...sheer panic realizing how serious his son's condition is and how serious the weather is. Such good acting.
Thank God Andy is there...injecting humor...calm...and skill. I love Andy's confidence. "I won't."

I love watching Delia and Amy bond...talking about boys and brothers. I love when Delia says to Amy: "He's the Best.".....followed by that reassuring smile.

If you're going to have an appendix attack you picked the right house! 2 surgeons....an MD....a nurse and a removable door!!

So considerate of Andy replacing Nina's cigarette. He's finally speaking his mind to Ephram and Ephram is actually listening!

Bright just wants Edna to be nicer....as we all do! Delia and Bright. :love:

Ephram: "You are without a doubt the strangest girl I have ever met. " Love it!
Amy: "You suck for leaving." Love it!

Amy is sooooooo happy that Ephram is staying....as we all are!!

Leave it to you to notice the spiritualism. Absolutely! The snow started when Julia was a child at the Everwood train station and ended with Amy and Ephram bonding on the porch swing. Julia orchestrated all of it. :love:

I thought that this was an emotionally powerful episode as long-festering resentments between Andy and the Father-In-Law who despised him came to a head. In this episode and the previous episode Jacob did everything he could to undermine Andy’s relationship with Ephram in an act of revenge for, in his mind, taking his daughter away from him and Ruth and neglecting her, and now he was threatening to take Ephram away from him completely. Emotions were really raw in this episode, but many of the characters said things that needed to be said, and the acting in this episode, as always, was first rate.

I liked the opening scene with Andy, Jacob, and Ephram but the tension between all three of them was palpable as Jacob was basically disregarding Andy’s wishes to have a say in whether Ephram would go back to New York, and he acted like Ephram’s return to New York was a done deal and he purposely didn’t consult Andy and ask for his opinion.

It was hilarious to see Edna storm into the diner inspiring fear as Irv explained to Delia that Edna hated her approaching birthday, and it was so sweet that Delia wanted to throw a party for Edna with Ruth’s help.

I loved Nina and Andy’s interaction in this episode as she was a true friend to Andy and she showed a tough side to her character and she wasn’t afraid to tell Andy when he was wrong and that he was feeling sorry for himself and give him some sorely needed advice and “tough love” at just the right time.

I liked seeing Harold, Bright, and Amy’s interaction as Harold took delight at the prospect of his mother being miserable at her birthday party, and his resentment toward his mother as well as a desire to see all this happen at Andy’s house really manifested itself in an amusing way.

I loved seeing Ephram’s conversation with his grandmother as Ruth explained how both Andy and Jacob were stubborn and how they both wanted to drink each other under the table from the moment they met and Andy came over to their house to ask for Julia’s hand in marriage, and they had been competing with each other ever since.

Delia was absolutely adorable and so sweet as she acted as the hostess of Edna’s Birthday Party, and it was so cute to see how smitten she was with Bright when she met him for the first time as she took off her baseball cap and fussed with her hair. :love: I also loved it when she pleaded with Ephram to stay in Everwood telling him that he did fit in there, despite his explanation that he felt that Everwood didn’t fit him just like the sweaters she had outgrown didn’t fit her, and my heart broke for Delia when she asked Ephram why him and his father hated each other so much.

I loved seeing Jacob playing a Gershwin tune at the party (it was one of his Preludes) and I liked seeing the pride he had in his gifted grandson.

I liked Andy’s talk with Ruth, who was a lot kinder and more understanding than Jacob, but she did have a point that Ephram (at that point) really was miserable in Everwood and that him and Jacob got along great, and that a lot had been dumped on him before he could handle it, which really was true at that point, but of course we knew why Ephram was miserable, and it had more to do with Amy’s rejection of him than it did with him truly being unhappy in Everwood.

It was really difficult to watch the heated conversation that Andy and Ephram had in front of everyone as they both gave in to their anger and resentment and lashed out at each other, but I feel that Jacob had egged them both on and he helped give rise to that very heated conversation.

I loved Ephram and Amy’s conversation outside on the porch as she asked him why he didn’t tell her that he was thinking of leaving, and Ephram, wearing his heart on his sleeve, said like it or not, she tended to have an effect on his moods, which was so true, because he was so in love with her. I had tears in my eyes when he said “When you’re nice to me there’s nothing I can’t do and when you’re mad at me, it’s all I can think about,” and that she was in his head, and as we all knew, she was in his heart. :love: I loved it when Amy admitted that she didn’t have a history of being cautious with his feelings, and that she wanted him to stay, saying that Everwood had really good snow, but Ephram’s attempt to be humorous when he said “That’s your pitch?” seemed to be the wrong thing to say, and he looked hurt once again as he didn’t get the reaction that he had hoped for. I can so remember being totally infatuated with a girl when I was a little older than Ephram, and I hung on every word that she would say, so I could completely relate to how Ephram felt in that scene.

The confrontation between Andy and Jacob was so intense and heated, as years of resentment and dislike of each other came to a boiling point as Jacob said that Andy was only half a man and he took Julia away from him and Ruth and he neglected her, and it all promised to get worse until they were interrupted by Bright’s medical emergency.

I loved the confidence and presence of mind that Andy displayed as they discussed Bright’s situation as Jacob was unable to perform the emergency appendectomy that Bright required due to tremors in his hands, and Andy won the respect of both Harold and Jacob as he coolly took charge of the situation and performed the necessary surgery on Bright. I also loved it when Harold told Bright the story of how he had broken his arm when Linda had dared him to jump off their bunk bed pretending to be Superman, and he showed a tender and caring side to his character that we rarely saw, especially at that point in the show, and we also got to see his love and concern for Bright in that scene.

I loved seeing the conversation between Amy and Delia as they compared notes over who had the worst brother, and it was sweet to see them bond like they did in that scene, and I wish that we had gotten to see more scenes between them like that over the years.

I loved the final conversation between Ephram and Andy as Andy spoke from his heart and he told him that when Julia died, Ephram was the only one who said that everything was going to be okay, and that he wanted him and needed him to stay, not just for Delia, but for him.

I loved Edna’s conversation with Bright as she showed how much she loved him in her own gruff way, and it was so sweet to see Delia come and visit Bright and she echoed what Edna had said when she told him that he had really scared them and not to do it again.

The final scene between Ephram and Amy was sweet, and I loved how she nervously told him that she had gotten into a fight with Colin and he ended up in a coma and she bitched at Bright and he had a burst appendix, and she had sort of needlessly bitten his head off the other night for no reason and she hadn’t said sorry yet and she didn’t want Ephram to end up in the hospital before he left, and he said that “You are, without a doubt, the strangest girl that I've ever met,” and Amy responded “I know. But you've been a good friend to me, despite it. You've been different,” and she really seemed happy when she told him that he was staying in Everwood, and when she said “I thought New York had everything,” and he responded “almost,” we all knew what he was talking about, and so did she. :love:

I loved the final scene between Andy and Jacob as Jacob had found a new respect for Andy and the man he had become, and I cried when he told Andy that Julia would like who he is now and then he related the story of how they had gotten stuck in the snow on a train in some town (not knowing that the town was, in fact, Everwood) and how Julia loved the place where they had stopped and she couldn’t stop talking about it, and Andy knew that he truly was honoring her wishes by moving to Everwood with Ephram and Delia.

Overall, I loved this episode and I feel that it was one of the best episodes of this season so far.

It plays out like a movie.

Andy had the patience of a saint. I’m shocked he didn’t kick him out after the first day. He tolerated such disrespect thrown his way.

I find it kind of funny but I know what you mean. At least she softened for both Bright and Delia.

Kind of shocked he never picked up on appendicitis during the first exam. It’s not a diagnosis that’s very difficult.

Lack of sensitivity. But the weird thing is Edna is sweet and kind to Amy and Delia. Not Bright initially.

Poor Andy, poor Delia and poor everyone having to witness it!

He wants him to beg him to stay basically. He’s flipping out here because Andy told him he’d be happier in NYC.

The bizarre thing is Ephram’s hurting over Amy, not Andy! Poor Andy had to endure pain and confusion once again.

I completely agree.

In fact, many characters not even involved in the main story said things that needed to be said. It was a main theme:

1. Ephram and Amy
2. Bright and Edna
3. Amy and Delia
4. Andy and Harold
5. Andy and Nina

Of course, the words exchanged between the entire Brown family too. There are many reasons why this episode was fabulous but this was a main reason. So many things were FINALLY exchanged between many characters. It felt therapeutic almost.

I love when Julia "stars" in episodes. Typically they are some of the best ones. She really did star in this episode. She pulled the Brown family together, and even apart (Jacob understanding he needed to back off).

I actually thought we'd see more of Jacob when they introduced the tremor. I thought it was opening up a future storyline. Maybe it was, and they couldn't get the actor to return. Who knows.

I agree. Julia's presence was definitely felt in this episode.

I thought that we would have seen Jacob and Ruth at The Unveiling and at Delia's Bet Mitzvah, but like I said previously, I think that they were just brought in to create drama (which they did) and having served that purpose, they were never heard from again. I wish that they had taken that route with Madison! :lol:

Jacob and Ruth (especially Jacob) were used to create drama and could be annoying, but I would have preferred seeing them from time-to-time over Madison’s mug in an irritating, lingering way. Jacob and Ruth were Ephram and Delia’s grandparents, Julia’s parents. It would have made sense seeing them occasionally. Madison came in to create instant drama and chaos. She was a short-term love interest for Ephram just like Tommy for Amy and Linda for Andy. Why on God’s green earth Berlanti decided to make Madison the exception and allow her to haunt the audience is the biggest mystery.

I'll never understand that either.

I checked out information on the actor who played Jacob, Mark Rydell, and he's had a long and distinguished career as an actor, a producer and a director. He also was an accomplished jazz pianist, so I'm sure that he did his own piano playing in this episode. The producers of Everwood really got top notch talent for this show.
