On top of that, Jacob obviously enjoys a special bond with Ephram that Andy can‘t duplicate. Ephram and Delia waking up to the sweet smell of their Grandmother's home cooking had me remembering the endless times as a little girl waking up to the smell of my Grandmother's artistry in the kitchen.

I completely understand Amy's coldness towards Ephram. She is denying that the mine kiss meant anything which is why she is being cold and distant. If you are are pulling for Ephram/Amy, you are glad she is acting this way. If she acted like nothing was wrong and was totally friendly, it would mean she didn't have any romantic feelings for Ephram. Not to mention the fact that she's dealing with a boyfriend she envisioned spending the rest of her life with (yes, even this early on, fantasy or not) who had been in a coma for months and months and is now awake and doesn't know who she is. I'd say that's reason enough for her to have a lot of stress and tension rolling around inside her head. Oh, and she's also just a teenager having to deal with all of this too.

I basically cannot stand Jacob on any level in this episode. Every moment he mentioned Julia I felt for him. Anything else, I took issue. They also showed up entirely unannounced. I know if you are family, you should be able to show up at any moment. However, the entire thing just seemed so set up to me because he was on a huge mission. I understand his anger towards Andy, because it's massively true Andy neglected Julia and their children. However, Jacob came to Everwood with an agenda. The agenda part is what bothers me. He’s acting like a manipulative snake. Andy was sunk before he could even open up his mouth. Jacob wasn't going to open up his eyes to see how Andy had changed.

I also didn't like how Jacob played Ephram against Andy indirectly and sadly, Ephram took the bait. I mean, just the episode before this one, Ephram was buying Andy a gift for his anniversary, caring for his father a great deal. Suddenly, his maternal Grandparents come to town and Andy is the bad guy again. I don't really get it. Maybe Ephram was reminded of his mom and Andy's not so great actions in NY with his Grandparents there. I suppose this could be the situation and of course Ephram and Andy are not entirely patched up yet. However, I still found it weird that Jacob comes to town to make Andy look like a fool for the most part. Yes he uses his daughter's death to justify it and while I can mildly understand that, I still think he was too hard on Andy and never bothered to actually see that Andy had changed a great deal. I found it so out in left field that Ephram wanted to go back to NY. It was only because of Amy overall, yet it is made to seem like Ephram wanted away from Andy and with Jacob, instead. What? Just last episode Andy and Ephram were bonding. Ridiculous. They are not totally mended but to get to where it supposedly is in this episode is a bit too much for me to comprehend. It doesn’t add up.

The fight between Ephram and Andy when Ephram comes home drunk had me siding with Andy, too. The one thing I never liked in Season 1 was when Ephram would get mad, he'd always bring up Andy's mistakes in the past or just remind him of how he can rebel against him. Ephram was upset over Amy and he took it out on Andy. Not to mention, he should have realized he was in the wrong being escorted home by the police for drunk and disorderly conduct. That was certainly not Andy's fault. If I was ever brought home by police drunk, I would be mortified. Never would I talk back to my parents no matter what. I just felt for Andy a lot in this one. He was getting it from both Jacob and Ephram and truly didn’t deserve the bad treatment.

Edna/Nonny: That was classic. Both of them couldn't be more different. Edna, by the way, rocked with her truck. It was so awesome. But yes, they couldn't be more different, and sure, there was jealousy on Nonny's end, but it was great seeing them find a way to come together for Delia's sake. I really enjoyed this storyline. It also showed how Nonny sort of passed the torch to Edna. I loved the scene between Delia and Nonny while they were baking together. It was so adorable, especially since they talked about Julia.

Mrs. Hart was so horrible in this episode. Did this cold witch forget that it was Amy that even made the surgery happen? It was also Amy who took a four hour trip to Denver every weekend to visit her son. Certainly, Amy needed to back off a little but she was incredibly cruel and heartless saying those words to Amy. That said... Colin’s parents had every right telling Amy to leave. Honestly, it was so unhealthy for Amy to be there all by herself in the first place. She needed to get out of there for her own mental health.

The medical story was kind of annoying to me. Not only was it a way to make Andy look bad in the eyes of Jacob and Ephram for having to skip out on the fishing thing, but the Gastric Bypass stuff was so poorly executed. This is a serious surgery and not just something that you do without extensive thinking and testing. There are other ways to lose weight that do not put you as risk for surgical complications that should always be considered first. That guy saying he'd tried every diet is simply not enough. I bet he never had help with a diet from a medical facility working directly with a nutritionist. If surgery was the only option, Andy should have investigated every option thoroughly first, along with proper testing. He could even have an undiagnosed medical condition like thyroid disease causing him not to be able to lose weight. It was never checked which was really bizarre.

One of my favorite parts of the episode was the scene between Bright and Ephram while they were fishing. The exchange was so awesome. Bright asking Ephram to go to the party was so great. I love how Bright told Ephram that for some reason he is the only one to make his sister smile. LOVE IT. This scene was just phenomenal. Foreshadowing of the magnificent Bright/Ephram friendship is in play, which is great to see.

Speaking of the party... yes, Ephram attends since nothing was going to stop him from being there for Amy. Yes, Amy said the "move on" words to Ephram but once again, Amy is running from their kiss in the mine. That is as crystal clear as the sun and the moon showing up each day. I keep wondering why Ephram had to bring up Colin on that party, he was there to cheer her up, not remind her about the fact that Colin does not remember her. Amy was fine until Ephram mentioned this. In a way, she actually was telling him the truth. There was no way in hell she could deal with their kiss and what it meant while taking on the Colin situation. It simply wasn't possible. I feel for both Ephram and Amy. As we see, they are connected, they have romantic feelings, but circumstances have prevented them from dealing with things head on right now. It is no one's fault. We do know there is a very big "to be continued" theme going on. I do have to say I liked how Ephram stuck it to her in the grocery store. LOL Nice line, Ephram, haha. See, I am an Ephram/Amy fan. They both can be incredibly sweet, they both can be incredibly immature in Season 1, but that's what makes their story so compelling. It is layered, flawed yet perfect at the same time.

My thoughts on the episode...

Nonnie and Grandpa! Yum...the smell of cinnamon! The kids are thrilled, but poor poor Andy...he's senses what's coming!! I guess he is used to being criticized by these two all those years...often (I'm sure) deserved.

Doesn't Nonnie know that Delia is not a girly-girl? I can't picture Delia ever wearing that dress...it just doesn't go with her baseball caps!

Edna is being a little condescending and judgmental toward Ruth. I can see a clash of personalities here.

Poor Bennie. He really cares for his dad, and his dad seems to be content with his situation and is only thinking of himself. Ben is desperate to fix his dad and Poor Andy would give anything to have a son who worries about him as much as Ben worries about his dad.
This was kind of an annoying storyline, but I guess they included it to make a point in comparison to Andy's situation.

Jacob has a lot to say to Andy in the form of criticism. I feel sorry for Andy, and yet I totally understand where Jacob is coming from. He desperately wants the best for his grandchildren and wants them to be happy. If saw my grandchild this miserable...I would probably do the same thing.

It was heartbreaking for Andy that Ephram jumped at the chance to go fishing with His grandpa after refusing Andy's invitation.

Mrs. Hart had a point. Colin should not be pushed and Amy was definitely pushing. But...the way she presented this to Amy was really mean and cruel. She didn't need to tell Amy that she was making it worse.

I loved the convo (aside from the insults) between Bright and Ephram. It was evident that Bright appreciates Ephram's influence on Amy's mood and realizes that Ephram is good for Amy. I believe that this was the beginning of a possible friendship between Bright and Ephram.

Andy was totally wrong forbidding Ephram from going to that party...especially since he knows that Ephram was not being very social and didn't really have a life in Everwood. Andy should have been more in tune with Ephram's needs. Jacob was.

Ruth...Stop being so pompous and stuffy! Sometimes you just have to give in!

Ephram and Amy at the party.....Ephram, you are talking too much! You are not helping!
Amy: "Maybe you should move on. "
That's definitely not what Ephram needed to hear.

Very sweet exchange between Ruth and Edna at the end of the evening.

Ephram had no right to be that mean and nasty to Andy after being brought home drunk by the cops. I really felt for Andy. How much can this guy take?

Challah bread French toast......the best!

When Andy heard that Ephram was thinking about moving back to NY it was like a kick in the gut. Andy looked so defeated....heartbreaking.

Yes. Beyond annoying. Why would Prime do this so soon? I was then going to watch it on HBO Max but realized we just dropped HBO about a week ago so that's a no go. I watched late last night on DVD but my DVD disc skipped a bit. Looks like I'm going to have to purchase another Season 1 copy.

It seems like it's never been easy to watch Everwood. Having it on Amazon was too good to be true!! You're right! Beyond annoying!

Exactly. It’s so annoying. The irony is one of the best series ever created (100% Berlanti’s very best) and it’s difficult to find. Yet so easy to find lower quality shows by comparison. It’s ridiculous.

I didn't like Jacob at all in this episode. I know in past watches I disliked him and tried to keep an open mind thinking I'd dislike him less and see the light more about his motivations during this watch but no dice. I think he had every intention of doing something about the Brown family living in Everwood. Ephram gave him the opening when he mentioned possibly moving back to New York. They show up unannounced and from the moment Jacob interacted with Andy he was condescending and sarcastic. Ephram was going to pick up on the way his Grandfather was treating his father and Ephram sided with his Grandfather. Ephram was perfectly fine with Andy in the past episode. In the past episode, Ephram's sensitive to the anniversary, buying Andy gifts. Now, all of a sudden, Ephram is miserable and wants to move back to NYC? I don't buy it. Ephram is pissed and hurt over the mine kiss that Amy refuses to discuss and face right now so once again he's taking it out on Andy. It sucks.

This was probably one of my least favorite episodes of this season so far, as Julia’s incredibly pushy and obnoxious parents made a surprise visit to see Andy and his family, much to Andy’s chagrin, and they both were harshly judgmental of the way that Andy was raising his family now that Julia was gone.

I didn’t like either Ruth or Jacob, and I could understand why Andy was really unhappy that they had showed up at their house unannounced. From the beginning of the episode to the end of it, they both grated on Andy’s nerves and they tried to interfere with how he was raising his children and Jacob seemed to delight in putting a wedge between Andy and Ephram.

Jacob was very passive-aggressive and mean as he made cutting remarks to Andy, and you could tell that Andy rightfully harbored a lot of resentment towards his In-Laws as they seemed out to prove that they could parent Ephram and Delia better than Andy could, and Jacob sought to undermine Andy at every turn.

I also didn’t like how Ruth looked down on Edna initially as some who was beneath her, and I’m glad that Edna held her own with her and eventually won Ruth’s grudging respect. I was glad that later in the episode that Ruth finally let down her guard with Edna as they both talked about Delia, and I could understand how Ruth was afraid that Delia would forget all about Julia since she lost her at such a young age, and I enjoyed the scene where Ruth told Delia a story about Julia when she was Delia’s age to keep Julia’s memory alive.

It was obvious that Ephram and Delia loved their grandparents and Jacob used that to his advantage throughout the episode, as he manipulated the situation so that he and Ephram could go on a fishing trip without Andy.

I liked the side story of how that boy Ben had so much love and concern for his father, who was morbidly obese but who didn’t want to do anything about it, and how Ben kept trying to convince Andy to convince his father Mike to have the gastric bypass surgery that could save his life, and I was touched when Andy told Mike that he wished that he had the kind of relationship with his son that Mike had with Ben.

I thought that Mrs. Hart was really cruel to Amy as she told her she was putting too much pressure on Colin and them and she ordered her to go home, and I liked seeing Bright’s concern for Amy as he told Ephram to got to the party that evening because he was the only one who could make his sister smile.

I didn’t like seeing how Jacob criticized everything that Andy did, but Andy did handle the situation with Ephram badly as he refused to let him go to the party, but Ephram was also at fault for not communicating with Andy and tell him why he really wanted to go. Once again, I felt like it was one step forward and two steps backward, as Ephram, hurt and rejected by Amy at the party when he told her that she should take a break from worrying about Colin and move on, and she told him that he should move on, harshly lashed out at Andy when he was brought home drunk by the Police. It seemed like every time Ephram and Andy made some progress in one episode their progress would be taken away in the next episode, and the estrangement between them was undoubtedly egged on by Jacob.

Like most young men (and I can relate) Ephram’s moods were based on how Amy treated him, and her rejection of him made him miserable and Jacob used that to his advantage to talk to him about moving back to New York with him and Ruth.

I thought it was so unfair for Jacob and Ephram to blindside Andy with the news that they were talking about the possibility of Ephram going to New York to live with them, and I hated how harshly judgmental Jacob was toward Andy this entire episode as he cruelly told him that a few months in the mountains didn’t make up for his neglect of Ephram all his life.

Overall, while this was an emotionally powerful episode, it just didn’t resonate with me like the other episodes did because of my intense dislike for Jacob and Ruth.
