@savethechildren is running new programs in New Mexico, helping migrant families and children recover from their harrowing journeys and sending them onto their sponsor families with fresh clothes, medicine, clean bodies, full bellies, toys and a lot of love.
•The majority of these people are families fleeing violence in the Northern Triangle.
•Families walk around 20 days to get to the US. A dangerous journey. One mom carried her paraplegic 13 year old daughter on her back for 17 days of walking.
•They enter our country looking for asylum— are detained at the border while US Customs vets their claims. Asylum seekers are up 600% this year.
•Families are released from detention to wait for their asylum court dates. Families are allowed to stay in the country while they wait if they are with their sponsors— usually family members already living in America.
•These people: No money. No baths. Need medical care. Need sleep. Need food. Need to organize travel. Children have been scared and on the move all of this time.
•This is where #SaveTheChildren comes in.
•The town of Deming, NM is pouring out money, time, goods, heart, opening homes, because they see these families as real people. They are running a shelter to help families after they’ve been released from detention.
•No politics allowed. Person to person.
•Save the Children is there to help with child friendly spaces, expertise in humanitarian crises. Trained volunteers. Child protection services.
•Parents ask how much it costs for their children to join in the play. They cannot believe we are there just to make life better.
•While we play with their children, parents watch with huge smiles— the first time their children have acted like kids in a long long long time. Or they fall into the deepest sleep— they are exhausted.
•With help, parents arrange travel onto their sponsor family.
•Families only stay 1-3 days but it’s enough to give them a clean, fresh, healthy, calm start on the next leg of their journeys.
•7000 people have been helped in the last 6 weeks.
