Maybe, we'll see - I'm on a Twitter/K-pop fandom "detox" since the beginning of the week, and I'm pretty happy with it Just music, no news (that's still hard for me), but most importantly no BS

Sort of? I was reflecting on how I could have fallen down the rabbit hole this weekend actually. I think it started with my obsessive need to find out as much as I possibly can about any new thing I'm starting to get interested in I initially just wanted to find out more about the group/behind the scenes stuff about e.g. music show wins and the only way to get translations of current stuff etc. was on Twitter (translators on tumblr apparently gave up in 2016 and IG was/is just so chaotic and inconvenient to search through - all the Mamamoo tags contain(ed) spam for every dang k-pop group out there) and in contrast to DC who conveniently has one translating and news account, Mamamoo has translations and news spread between about 5-15 different accounts and some are specific to just one member (no, there's no just Solar news/translation account), so if you want to know as much as you can, you're kinda automatically "involved in Moo stan twitter".
When everything is new and too much to process you don't realise all the hypocrisy, bias and misinformation just yet. I feel like the Blue;S boycott should have been my wake-up call (and the few Solar fans on Twitter have pointed out a lot of the stuff that made me turn away now back then already - they are just so few and get drowned out by the majority opinion), but that was also the first time I was actually "there" for a comeback and then there were live-streams/tweets for their concerts and fan-meetings and just a lot of Mamamoo schedules/performances providing content that was a lot of fun and super exciting (and getting the latest scoop is exhilarating in its own right as well)

I just got reminded more and more often over the last few months, why I'm personally not on "social media" in the first place: Primarily, I'm allergic to the "discourse" there and can't deal with idiots who have their brains only for decoration. I know I'm a terrible know-it-all, but facts matter to me, congruency between one's opinion and one's actual behaviour, correct presentation and a differentiation between reality and fantasy matter to me - particularly when there's real people involved and not fictional characters - and none of this is happening anywhere right now and obviously also not in the fandom. And I know it's irrational and useless, but it makes me furious, I can't help it (yet)!

There was always one big account who spread mistranslations or (get this!) fanfic headcanon or just a general tweet that fit their annoying "Moonsun is real/Solar is such a dumb meme/Moonbyul has been through so much how could they make her choose between rap and not being in a group, but now she's the best vocalist out there writes all the songs/lol Hwasa hates cute stuff/poor Wheein is the most vulnerable person on earth pack her in cotton wool the poor baby you don't even know about how hard anxiety/flu/a twisted ankle is, but it makes her an even better artist() narrative and people routinely just accepted that as fact and kept retweeting. And that stupid ****ing boycott of Solar's collab over a false rumour that the oh so "progressive and intelligent" fandom that likes to stress how much they support all the members equally didn't even bother to clear up or question was basically just the culmination of these "little" things, the cherry on top the hypocrisy sundae if you will. It made me incredibly sad, even if I'm not even "personally involved" in any of this mess

I'm also very prone to falling into the "don't miss anything" and "get emotionally involved" traps that these sites have perfected, that's why it was so hard to finally admit to myself that "being in the know" does not outweigh the negativity anymore. I was tempted to look up the translation for Solarsido today, but then I just went to papago and got the gist of it myself - and surprise, it was enough to satisfy my curiosity and the subs were up a few hours later! Better late than never I guess!
