Despite frequent interactions between humans and Mantas, there is still a lot we do not know about them.
Manta rays are extremely intelligent — with the largest brain-to-body-mass ratio of any fish — and are thought to be able to recognize individual divers. The chance of an interaction with these gentle and magnificent creatures attract people from all corners of the world , where they can provide an economic lifeline to local communities if sustainably managed.
However, in the last decade, their populations have plummeted globally. Conservation International is working to protect key manta ray populations in Asia-Pacific to ensure they are valued and conserved. Through innovative technology such as satellite tagging, and forging strong partnerships with communities, government and other stakeholders, the understanding and value of these highly mobile animals is growing, helping to spawn globally significant protection efforts.

Since the 1930s, communities in Northern Baja and Southern San Diego County have experienced extreme water contamination — leading to staph infections, hepatitis, flesh-eating bacteria, and more. There has been little-to-no action by responsible agencies, both in the U.S. and in Mexico. This problem will only get worse, unless we work together towards a shared solution. Into the Okavango a @natgeo documentary by director @neilgelinas premiered this day last year at Tribeca, and now it’s available on numerous platforms across the globe. Of course, it depends on where you are, but it’s available in most regions for iTunes, Amazon, GooglePlay, Hulu, and the NatGeo TV app. Surprisingly, we’ve been getting an incredible response from in-flight movies as well. United, Emirates, Air France, etc 🙌🏻
The DVD can be purchased off Amazon or the #NatGeo online store.
