Hmm... I niticed that there is a documentary of a very similar name in the media library of one of the big public TV stations here last night... I might have to check out if there's a connection (not sure how licensing these things works)

#OnThisDay in 2015, the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project launched an expedition along a “megatransect” beginning at the previously unsurveyed source lake of the Cuito River. After exploring the region for a few days, the team loaded into mekoros (traditonal canoes) and headed down the river to navigate and survey the length of the Cuito River from its source to the confluence with the Cubango River. From the confluence, the expedition passed through Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and across Botswana’s Okavango Delta all the way to Lake Xau in the Kalahari Desert—from “source to sand.” This scientific expedition traveled 2,414 km finishing 121 days later, and demonstrated the ecological connectivity across a vast wilderness of woodlands, rivers, grasslands and floodplains that spans four countries—Angola, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. While the Okavango Delta is protected within Botswana, the greater Okavango Basin, which includes the critical rivers and lakes that supply the delta, are not. These source waters in Angola are under increasing threats from deforestation, uncontrolled fire, the rising commercial bushmeat trade, and unchecked development. If these waters remain unprotected, the future of the Okavango Delta is at risk.

The team’s extensive research in the region will serve as the scientific foundation to establish one of the largest transboundary-protected areas in sub-Saharan Africa, safeguarding the water that over 1 million people, and the rich biodiversity, depend on. Key to accomplishing this will be to create a conservation economy for the communities that live in this landscape.
