Here the scene:

He sat up, taking her hand in his as he tried to form the words in his head he wanted, needed, to express to her. “I don’t want to have sex with you. Keira, I…” He tucked a lock of her silky hair behind her ear, his fingers sliding down the satiny strands and lingering on her neck. With his eyes on the place where their skin touched, he began his sentence, the bright hazel landing back on hers halfway through his confession. “I want to make love to you.”

Her breathing hitched in her throat, all forms of communication flying out the window as his eyes bore into hers still. Her silence had him rushing to continue, no longer worrying if this was too soon, or if he really felt the way he thought.

“Do you know I wait up at night for your call, just to hear the sound of your voice? And I don’t go out with the guys much anymore because I can’t stomach looking at another woman. I’ve tried to say this so many times; a few days ago on the phone… last night in an email… three weeks ago when you called me that morning from LA. But I… I didn’t want you to hear it that way. And maybe I waited because I wanted to be sure when you were here that I felt the same way, that the reason I wanted to tell you wasn’t just because I missed you more than I could stand, but I know it. Watching you now, I just… the pieces just fit.”

His palm rested to her cheek, and still she was rendered speechless by the words that flowed so effortlessly off his tongue, words she herself had been thinking of as well. “I love you, Keir. I love the way you laugh at things I tell you. I love how you look at every day as something new. I love the way I know exactly when your tears will start to fall. I love every little face you make, the way you bite your lip when you’re excited, the way you ramble when you’re nervous. I love how your hand just fits in mine, how you kiss me like you mean it. All of it, Keira. I love all of it... because I love all of you.”

Her bright, brown eyes began sparkling with moisture under his intense stare, his eyes wandering over every feature of her face as if memorizing the way she looked in that moment, and one tiny tear slipped past her lashes after she blinked, followed by another. She tried to speak, to voice her own emotions, but the only thing that came out was a soft cry, and he offered her a half smile repeating his declaration on a quiet whisper as he brushed her tears away with a feather-light touch and touched his forehead to hers. “I love you, Keira.”

She brought his hand to her lips, kissing his knuckles with the gentleness of a child. When she raised her eyes to his again, she smiled, and his heart melted. “You know, the day I left I almost told you, but I wasn’t sure. And I struggled with it for a while because, let’s face it, there’s not much to do but think,” she chuckled, closing her eyes briefly. “I even wrote a letter to you, trying to put down on paper the perfect way to tell you how I felt. Except… there isn’t a rehearsed way to say what’s in your heart, is there? All those nights I sat there with my pen and paper, writing down this well thought-out speech while I watched any game I could pick up on the satellite just to see you play, they don’t matter. Because the only perfect way I can tell you… is just to say it.” Sniffling back a fresh round of tears as two raced down her cheeks, her bottom lip trembling, she tilted her head to the side. “I love you, too.”
