The Craftsmanship of Orlando Bloom: Analyzing the Acting II (SPOILERS!)

Just in time for TROY, too.

Tired of hearing people merely fawn all over Orlando Bloom's incredibly hot body?

Neither am I.

But if you wanna do that and still discuss how well or badly Orli acts, if you appreciate him for his talent... then you've come to the right place.

Be aware that there are SPOILERS every now and then, so please warn about them and be warned.

In any case, in order to guide us in our discussion, here are some rules as established by Am/spikearrin.

1. No gushing unless it is related to how well Orlando acts.
2. No posting of pictures unless its to illustrate a certain facial expression you liked while he was acting a role.
3. Absolutely no guttery comments.
4. Be honest. But not the sort of honest where if Orlando read your post, hed want to sue you up the wazoo.

Keep in mind we're here to discuss Orlando's acting talent (or lack thereof, if such is your opinion) and not how hot he is. We have way too many threads on that.

Eagerly awaiting Troy over here... just want to see how Orlando handles a somewhat more complex character

Hey Im new to this thread.

Im looking forward to seeing Orli in Troy. Even though it does seem to be a bit like LOTR with all the action, but at least we will be able to see more of Orli's acting skills. In the trailers he seems to handle the role of Paris very well so Im sure he will do brilliantly in the whole film over all.

Sounds good so far...

hey just watched Troy at an advanced screening and I posted this at the Troy thread but wanted to share...

Spoilers!!
.

So I'm sure you've all heard that Orlando gets his "ass handed to him"--oh was it horrible to witness!! The hardest part to watch was just to see his character fall to this pathetic shadow of a prince (for me personally at least because I'm so used to him as the butt kicking Legolas). But he plays Paris as this extremely naive, love over logic guy, who's selfish and extremely pathetic. However, he also tries to do the honorable thing. I think the really wants to be the courageous, loyal, honorable guy to make everything okay again, but he struggles a lot with cowardice. You can really feel the love he has for his brother, and in the end I think he really just wants to be as good of a man as hector. He carries a lot of guilt in this movie and I think it, in part, drives him. For a while he sorta becomes a joke, but I think thats the point. Orlando does a fantastic job as the playboy prince who gets a crash course lesson in reality. He really didnt comprehend the massive ***** hole he just dug for himself and you want him to make it right again. You love him, you hate him, you laugh at him, you think him romantic, you pity him... but in the end I think you're just sad for him.
Well done.

That piece of news gives me great hope and joy that the film - and Paris' character - was done right.

At the middle of the movie, I was kind of asking myself why he took this character in the first place. Paris was just so spineless in this movie (at this point anyway) and I always thought of Paris as a musclebound idiot cum ladies' man. The real low point was during that battle with Menelaus...to cringe and grasp at your older brother's leg was just plain pathetic. But the character redeemed himself in the end. I think Orlando injected just the right amount of wimpiness and was able to pull off the guilt and the courage at the end. You just can't hate the guy for rendering that kind of performance.

You can take Orlando Bloom from the Legolas character, but you can't take Legolas out of Bloom It was good, loyal to the Iliad at least, even without Phoebus Apollo guiding the arrow.

I always thought he probably took it because it was as far away from the Legolas and Will Turner characters as possible, no matter which way you look at it Paris was not a hero

Thanks for your thoughts May

I'm gonna see Troy tomorrow so hopefully by this time tomorrow i will actually have something to contribute to the conversation

I saw it today...it was fantastic. But if I comment on what I really thought of Orli's acting in the movie, then I'd lose all the friends I don't even have at this board yet.

**SPOILER**

Paris was a spineless putz; he did try to do the right thing and take responsibility for his philandering, but he waited too late to grow a hero's conscience as far as I'm concerned. It was cool to see Leggers reborn in arrow-shooting form though. But then he kills The Brad...yes, yes, I know it had to happen, but...The Brad .

I don't think you can play likeable characters all the time. I mean, there's a role to be played in Paris, and someone has to do it. Maybe he was looking for a change - and to play any role at all in Troy is a great oppurtunity.
Thinking the roles he has to come, The Calcium Kid and Kingdom of Heaven will be good-guy roles. Haven I'm pretty sure he does something bad. I think it's healthy to spice things up a bit.

Ok i saw Troy yesterday but for some reason i wasn't able to get on the boards then

If you haven't seen Troy yet you should probably avoid my post

**SPOILERS BELOW**

I actually really enjoyed this movie and almost every performance in it. The only weak performances in it for me were Brad Pitts and Diane Krugers. Pitt tried hard but for me there just seemed to be something off about his performance and Kruger…well she looked beautiful but other than that I don’t really have anything to say about her.
Now onto Orlando…
He was Paris to me through and through. The only times that fell a bit flat were some of his scenes with Helen and maybe I am bias but I felt it was more to do with Krueger than him, he seemed to be giving lots and not receiving any in return and there was just no chemistry (just like PotC). The scene where he fought Menelaus (sp?), i don’t think I have ever seen anyone look so frightened in my life, his best moment in the movie by far and fantastic in general. I thought him and Eric Bana had a lot more chemistry on screen than him and Kruger. But once again there didn’t seem to be a lot for him to do besides being scared, looking damn cute and being a big wuss (which he did very well). I definitely thought he performed better in this than in PotC and the majority of the critics seemed to agree as well.

And i seem to be the only person in the entire world who didn't think of Legolas at the end during the bow and arrow bits

Anyone else got an opinion on him? It seems quiet in here

He probably did but it was more that I was seeing Paris at the time and not Orlando/Legolas and the character of Paris is about as far from Legolas as you can get. The only reason he did it was to save his cousin and even then he didn’t have the guts to go down and fight, he just shot from afar.
