Pacey/Joey are still well remembered in the media, and I think that speaks to how well-loved the pairing was/is. I think it's interesting that they are still used as an example of well-received love story, and of course the Pacey/Joey/Dawson love triangle is basically a classic now

When the WB series began, it was clear that this was Dawson and Joey’s story. Even though Pacey showed a temporary interest in Joey in one episode, the early seasons of Dawson’s Creek established Dawson and Joey as the show’s soulmates, the endgame. Then season 3 came along. The introduction of the Dawson/Joey/Pacey love triangle turned out to be much more than an attempt to re-energize the show, which it did, much like Dan/Blair has done for Gossip Girl. The chemistry between Pacey and Joey fundamentally shifted the show’s endgame. Dawson and Joey ending up together was no longer a predestined ending. Heck, Dawson was being completely dwarfed by Joey/Pacey.

Yesterday I was rewatching a lot of PJO clips from the end of S3. Best build up ever

The angst and passion at the end of the season is seriously the show's best.
