Which proves, in my opinion, that the whole second act of DC finale was rushed in the change from Dawson to Pacey as her endgame.

Would you guys have preferred to see the show end with Coda or Swan Song?

Swan Song, because the whole of Season 5 re-built Dawson and Joey's romance and centered them as the will they/won't they couple again.

Coda would have been too abrupt for an ending, and we weren't blessed with much D/Jo until those last few eps.

^ As much as I like Coda I'd have to agree. There was a long, romantic buildup in s5 that made the finale so worth it. That scene in Swan Song is one of my favorites and the show could've easily ended right there and I would've been happy.

Totally agree and that airport scene where Joey says "You're my past, present AND future" is just epic for them. I hate how the S6 finale retcons this.

the kiss scene at the end of S4 was pretty gratuitous/unnecessary to me and I could've done without it (I mean I understand the parallels/poeticness of it to the S1 finale which is nice but still) so I think you guys might be convincing me to be leaning more towards S5 but I like Coda sm also because of the Pacey/Dawson phone call scene and the Jen/Jack/Grams scene

I'm still gonna have to go with Coda

What do the rest of you guys think?

I don't remember a Dawson/Joey romance being built up too much in S5 but then again I haven't re-watched it in a while

Wow, I never thought of it that way I saw it as the writers making DJo realize that they had unresolved feelings for each other, and the possibility of that being taken away after high school made them finally act on it. Remember, Gretchen had told Dawson "you're still chasing after Joey, literally and metaphorically."

Swan Song, because it was majorly important for Joey confessing her undying love for Dawson, whereas Coda was slightly more rushed post-Graduation although it made sense for them to say goodbye that way.

Believe me, it was definitely built up in Season 5 Pacey even tells Joey "you guys deserve your shot [at being together]" and it all just flows into pace... Until Dawson's dad dies, and Dawson falls into grief. Then at the end of the season, he tells his father's gravestone "I wanna be with Joey, I love her." Then they have the great airport love confession and kiss, where everything sets in motion for them to come back together

okay I just looked at some episode summaries now and i'm remembering some stuff again

S5 had better buildup in terms of the DJo romance there was little to none dealing with the DJo romance in S4 and had more of a focus on them building up their friendship again

so that's why that kiss at the end of S4 felt forced to me and more like an afterthought whereas if you look at S1 it feels more earned

but then again that kiss at the end of S4 leads into the beginning of S5

I really love that screencap of the airport scene btw

s3 is the only season where I was almost convinced they were over each other. But s4 brought that all back again. They kind of danced around each other that entire season and there was so much time spent on building their friendship back up. So them kissing in the finale didn't feel out of the blue to me either. I think there were a lot of hints that it'd happen again eventually. They just took a break to be with other people that season but their bond was strong or maybe even stronger than before.

I think I like Swan Song a bit more because it was more thought out, on DJo and the writers part. There was more buildup to an adult romance there than we go at the end of s4, even if I still think Coda makes sense for DJo and their history. But in Swan Song, there's no question that that was a romantic scene. And I just liked that she was chasing him down for once.

Dawson definitely wasn't over Joey in S3. He's devastated when convincing Joey to go after Pacey in 'True Love'.
Also, Joey proved that she still had feelings for Dawson after he kissed her in the Prom episode and she literally said to him "When you kissed me, I felt something... Something I wasn't expecting and something that will probably always be there."

^ Yep, that's all very true. Joey spent at least half of s3 pining for Dawson and then Dawson did the same with her at the end of the season. And like you said, Joey still felt something when Dawson kissed her in Anti-Prom and she didn't try to stop him from kissing her. I think there was a definite hint at the end of that episode for an ultimate DJo endgame when Dawson said he still had faith in them and they Gail proposed to Mitch right after that.

All these incredible moments - yet, they feel so wasted when we know how it ended. I'll probably still be complaining about this on my death bed...
