Episode Discussion # 407- "You Had Me At Goodbye"

While Andy puts off going back to school after her close call at the Rave, she does find time to reestablish a new kind of friendship with Pacey. Joey doesn't mind because she's too preoccupied with the problem of having to decide who is to write her "the person who knows me best" essay for her college applications. Torn between the two men in her life, there seems to be no right answer. Jen, meanwhile, is feeling that no one knows her anymore. She's become a pariah even to her closest friends, especially Jack, since the episode with Andie has branded her as the responsible party.

When Andie gets the opportunity of a lifetime that includes not returning to Capeside High, however, the dynamics of these friendships are challenged and tested in a whole new way.

One of the saddest episodes of series because this is the one Andie left the show. I loved Andie and I think it's a damn shame professional writers could not come up with better storylines for her causing her to be written out. I knew after Joey found out about the person who knows you best it was gonna be Dawson. Even Gretchen knew. I can totally understand Dawson's hesitation to do it after all that happened but I did notice Joey looked disappointed when he came back saying he was not the right person anymore. I loved seeing Pacey/Andie hanging out. Since this was her last episode I liked seeing it even though it was just friendship. Once again I enjoyed Dawson's scenes with Mr. Brooks and for the first time I sensed a sadness to him when he talks about his brothers.

I thought Drue was slime not noble when he turned Jen in. Poor Jen had a lot coming down on her and I did not like how Jack was being so mean to her especially when she showed up at his door. I thought Andies dad was being supportive with his idea for her and I like how far he came since season 2. Andie speech at the end is just so sad and made me tear up. I love how she tells D,J,P how lucky they are to have friends they have known their whole life and telling Jack to stop being angry at Jen. I like at the end Dawson told Joey he never doubted how well he knew her and would like to do it for her. Andie/Pacey scene was nice telling him that he gave her the strength she has. I thought it was a nice thing that Andie put Pacey's arm around Dawson and I love that picture of the whole group. Good-bye Andie you were severely missed the rest of the series. Also this EP was dedicated to the late David Dukes and I dedicate this review to him as well.

I felt bad for Jen, but I could see where Jack was coming from. He wanted a scapegoat. I like that Andie said it wasn't Jen's fault

I really felt that, when the writers made the decision to have Andie cheat on Pacey, they effectively ruined the character. But they almost redeemed themselves with a great good-bye for her, and Meredith Monroe simply shone in this episode. The last scenes with the camera shots were great, and I particularly liked the choice of song "I will remember you". I think this episode really felt like a watershed: Dawsons always handled the "goodbyes" really well - whether it was pacey joey sailing into the sunset in True Love, dawson going to LA in Coda, Jen and Grams and Jack getting into the taxi in Joey Potter and the Capeside Redemption.

p.s. did you guys notice that the photo Dawson has on his desk in the series finale is the photo taken from this episode - only minus Jack and Andie!

Hey everyone!

I don't normally post, but I love reading what everyone thinks of the different episodes!

This is one of my favourite episodes just because everyone is together, and Andies speech is a perfect ending for her character... her and Pacey are really sweet together, you can tell that they will be there for each other always. And I love that Joey says that Pacey will be the person who knows her best in 10 years time... Awww Pacey and Joey are the best couple!! Don't mind Dawson in this episode either, and I generally do mind him in this series! (Sorry Dawson fans!)
Jen and Jack are great as well... I love that they are so close....

Anyway thats all I can think of to write at the moment!!

Take care
xxxx

Hey lulah Hope to see you post again soon.

I agree that Andie's speech was so beautiful and is what DC is all about - friendship. I love the little move she did to get Pacey and Dawson to stand together.

Andie: No, I am. (they stop and look at her) I'm leaving Capeside. And that's why I asked you all to come here tonight. To say goodbye and also, there's something I need to say to you guys. All of you, before I go. So Jen, Jack, please stay. (everyone sits, clockwise from Andie, Jack, Dawson, Joey, Pacey and Jen, in a circle. Andie stands and addresses everyone.) You know what, it shouldn't have taken a scheme to get you all here tonight. When my dad first made me the offer to take the rest of the year off, I sat down with my trust #2 and made my list of pros and cons. The pros were pretty obvious. Opportunity of a lifetime, right? Then came those nasty cons. You know what got top billing? You guys. The thought of leaving all my friends. I mean you guys are the one's who have supported and consoled and understood unconditionally. But look at us now. We are a mess. And let's talk about why, starting with last week's fiasco. Okay, enough with the blame Jen game. If I don't, you shouldn't. Yes, she had them. But I took them. It was my fault. And Pacey, Joey, Dawson - you guys are so lucky. Do you have any idea how rare it is to have friends that you've known your entire life? So please don't underestimate that. Because in the end you always go back to the people that were there in the beginning. And in the beginning, there was the three of you. And you two (Jack and Jen), you know what? This is just… it's really inexcusable. (To Jack) The biggest reason that was keeping me here was the thought that if I left, you wouldn't have a sister around. But then I realized you would. (to everyone) When I first met you, I didn't know much about love or friendship. And each of you taught me a lot about both. So maybe by my leaving, I can return the favor. Because the thought of it ending like this, the way things are right now… it's just… it's not how I want to remember us.

This is Meredith Monroe's episode. I was never a huge Andie fan, but she totally had *me* in this episode. Her speech was absolutely everything the show is about, and should be about. Meredith did an awesome job, and her send-off is really very touching and appropriate. The Andie character had a big impact on the characters at Capeside, and I like the way she demonstrates the interaction she has with each of them. With Pacey, they were first loves, and always will have that affection for each other and always will care for each other. With Jack, they have a strong sibling bond, and they are each other's life-lines. With Jen, she stood up for her and felt humbled by Jen's wisdom and experience.

Jen and Jack's rift was powerfully done, and Kerr Smith can really act anger well. I love them. I like that Andie mended the bond between them, and she acknowledged how much they meant to each other.

But yeah. I actually don't really have anything else to say about the other characters, because frankly, they weren't that important in this episode.

As an Andie's fan, I felt sad she was leaving. This episode was bittersweet. I was glad they redeemed her character, but it's a shame they did this only to send her off... As a P/An fan I wish the goodbye scene between her and Pacey would be more meaningful, because I don't think it was...
The song "I will remember you" was perfect for this episode...

Aside from that, it was great to see Jack/Jen making amends and Dawson/Joey rebuilding their friendship...

I cry every time I watch this episode. I just can't help it. When Andie first came on to the series I didn't really like her all that much, but when she left she was one of my favorite characters. Great speech, and I'm glad she tried to get everyone back together again.

One of the best episode in season 4. Andie was amzing in this last episode. I'll never forget her goodbye speech. Really a good episode. It just reminds me what a big mistake was getting rid of Meredith Monroe
