I use to hate that when I worked in a drug store. There is nothing more frustrating than having someone you know you are smarter than talking to you.

Now, when people start that garbage and I'm standing behind them in a line, I take the time to remind them that the cashier is there to help, that s/he is a person too and yelling/calling him or her stupid isn't helping anyone.

I need to learn how to shut up sometimes

For me all jobs are uselful, if I ever lost my job and can't find another one, I would have no problems going back to Mcdonald's for a while. It's better to earn money youself than to wait for someone to take care of you

There was, Jess.

Fort Hood is the name of the base. It's in Texas and is the largest Army installation in the US. I use to live across the street from the base's airfield and, if I recall correctly, I've actually seen the building where this all happened. It was breaking news this afternoon and I stopped dead in my tracks. I could not believe it.

I believe my brother's ex-wife, who is stationed out of Fort Hood, is already deployed to Iraq right now because they said that the 1st Cavalry is overseas (and she's 1st Cav, 4th ID) but no one knows for sure. I have a feeling she is fine because the odds of her being one of 12 people out of 45,000 who were killed today are slim. Still...the thought of knowing someone that could happen to turns your blood cold...

They were talking about putting the whole base, and the surrounding roadways, on lock down. All I can say about that is...what a mess. There are only a few major highways that lead in and out of the base and the city of Killeen (where the base is located) so locking that base down essentially locked the whole city down.

President Obama vocalized it perfectly when he said the idea of our soldiers being killed on a US base is absolutely horrifying.

I wonder of the shooter had some kind of mental illness, because from the yahoo article, it's saying that the shooter lost it when he found out he was going to be shipped overseas. It didn't say if it was his first time over seas or not.

My best friend and her husband just last week moved from Killeen, her husband is in the army and everyday he would go to that base. I'm so glad they left.

Those kind of killings are still very shocking to me

We (thankfully) don't have them here, mostly cause it's very difficult to get a weapon not because people are more sane

I think they shock everyone, Jess. If it had happened any other place, I would probably be a little less so but military bases in this country are no joking matter. They are like border patrol. I remember the first time I went on post at Fort Hood. They searched the car thoroughly. They even checked the storage space where the spare tire was. If you are a civilian coming on that base, you are getting searched at that main entrance every time you go through it until you are given a permanent pass to get on and off that base.

I believe I heard on one news channel that he was actually a psychiatrist (you may want to check that bit of information to make sure its correct). As I understand it, his opposition to the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, coupled with his anger/frustration at being deployed, is what set him off. Mental illness or not, that really does not justify killing 12 people, 1 of whom was a civilian. Don't get me wrong, I blame the military for not properly handling the mental health crisis that is going on within their ranks but this is reprehensible to me. I do not believe in the death penalty at all but when you willing kill 11 of your fellow soldiers without provocation, I lose all sympathy. Especially considering at least some of those fatalities were probably just kids.

I think the saddest part is that those people are not going to feel save in their own homes. And not just the soldiers on post but the people who walk the streets of Killeen and Harker Heights. They are not what you would call the safest looking neighborhoods but there was always a certain safety in the fact that the base was within earshot. Now...that's all gone.

Apparently he had mental problems as well, he was being picked at a lot because of his origins. For me it doesn't excuse anything.

It's kind of ironic that he was a psychiatrist, no? I still can't believe it happened. And all day long yesterday they were saying he was dead but it turns out he isn't even though he was shot multiple times.

And just now I turned on the news and there's been a shooting here in Orlando. A disgruntled employee I guess. So far, one person's dead, 5 injured.

It's crazy.

I don't think him having a mental illness is an excuse at all or the fact that he was "picked" on because of his religion. But it makes me wonder why he was even in the military if he disagreed with the war and wasn't happy? Did he not think there wasn't going to be some form of animosity towards him because of his religion, especially after 9/11? I wonder what made him stay so long. He couldn't get discharged or something?

We had an angry customer come in today at the bank complaining about his credit card and long story short he went home called the Bank of America customer service and told them that he was going to find the closest bank he lived near (which was us, since he had been there earlier) and he was going to, "shot us all and then punch us in the face."

.....I think I'm going to call out tomorrow

In situations like this, I usually make an attempt to see the perspective of the perpetrator (mostly because it's in my nature and human behavior is so multi-dimensional that I can never really lay blame at anyone's feet). This time, though, I have virtually no sympathy for the man. I recognize the potential plight of someone who is pushed to the edge like it appears that he was but I cannot reconcile taking it out on the people he did. The killing of any US troop makes me angry, and it is especially infuriating when another soldier does so.

Wait...was he going to shoot you prior to punching in the face? If so, that seems like a wasted effort to punch someone.

Sorry, it's not funny, I know, but that is just ridiculous thing to say. Doesn't the guy who made that call know that, technically, he could be arrested for saying what he said? I get frustrated with my bank too sometimes but threatening to shoot the bank employees isn't going to get anyone very far.

Ever since I got my job and has been reading the paper every single day, I've been less and less tolerant when it comes to people killing others

Reading all about murders and stuff kinda made me even more cynical when it comes to people

Maybe he got into the military to get a free education and thought that he wouldn't be called to Iraq or Afghanistan.

But he should know that the education is not really free. You pay them back by going to war and etc.
