I read in a couple of places, now long gone, the original ending of the series was going to be some thing like this:

Dawson and Joey were to get married. Pacey and Andie were going off to dinner after the hospital scene, not as a couple, but as friends with the potential to rekindle their romance.

I have also read that the reason Pacey and Andie were going to dinner as friends, because they didn't want people to feel as if Andie was a consolation prize for Pacey. When I read that, I couldn't believe it. Pacey winding up with Andie would be hitting the jackpot, not a consolation prize.

One of the big reasons KW changed his original idea was the unavailability of Meredith Monroe, who was filming some thing else and could only give him one day. He needed her to be available for 2 or 3 weeks, as she was going to play a integral part in the series finale.

Also I think the network and Stupin wanted a PJ finish, and pushed him in that direction.

Ugh, KW really seemed to be the brains and common sense for a majority of the show

I get not having the actress but it’s clear the others had their favorites

Very true, I think they discussed this in the commentary for the finale. How he originally planned on Pacey and Andie to end up together. It's sad to think how they were meant to be...

I wonder a lot about how the show would have turned out if Kevin didn't leave the show at the end of Season 2. The fact that when he returned for the Season 4 finale and made sure to give Pacey/Andie a nice moment to end on, on top of the fact that he once again wanted them to have an ending together in the Season 6 finale... He really wanted them to end up together.
