This is why Season 3 is so problematic to me. Such incredible dialogue here, foreshadowing their epic reunion to come after Andie gets better, and we were duped out of that, all of it thrown away for a terrible off-screen fling that completely went against everything Andie was. I never bought that she would cheat on him. They were totally committed to each other. The illness had brought them even closer together. The whole relationship had matured Pacey to the point where he broke down in tears in front of his abusive father and Andie's love for Pacey had actually re-ignited Pacey's father's love for him.

That was a really strong scene and Josh knocked it out of the park with his performance in it.

I know what you mean about the illness bringing them closer together. The funny thing about mental illness is it's unpredictable and can make people do things that appear out of character like when Andie stole the PSAT or when she embellished the story about Rob. The writers made Andie cheat on Pacey, but it didn't mean she didn't love him or want to be with him. She regretted it immediately after it happened, it's just unfortunate that it happened at all.

I think they did try to attribute Andie's fling to her illness making her act OOC but the problem is that a lot of viewers didn't see it that way. They only saw it in black and white - she cheated on Pacey, a man who loved her very much and stuck by her when things turned rough. When people see things that bluntly, they don't want to hear excuses for cheating behavior.

I agree with you that Andie clearly regretted it, but it was clear that the writers were using this as a way for Pacey to never feel the same way about her again (so that when he moves towards Joey, the audience will accept it) and for me, it all felt very unfair and contrived. It was basically character assassination for Andie.

I applaud the show for portraying a character dealing with mental illness so realistically but the way they character assassinated Andie was very cruel for both the character and the fans

I don't understand how they can go from portraying Andie's mental illness (and Pacey's support to her through it all) so incredibly well in Season 2, to screwing up their relationship so carelessly in Season 3.


That said, it was another case of staff changes. Note the various different writers by that point. I think they just wanted to go down a completely different route and act as if Pacey hadn't cared all that much for Andie (when we all know that wasn't true.)

A hater of the blonde highlights, I guess? It's pathetic And honestly, I liked his hair that way. It was an interesting change.


He probably had it that way because he'd just finished filming Cruel Intentions, so they worked it into DC as a character trait of Pacey's, trying to impress girls.
