Was Dawson missing something?
I've been thinking about it for some time now, but I just caught a repeat of the very last ep and was wondering what you guys thought about something. For me I always felt that Dawson should have ended the show finding love. Not so much in Joey, but I was hoping for them to show maybe Dawson running into Gretchen, and us getting a feeling that this could be Dawson's "true love" Or if not Gretchen then someone else. I know Dawson was suppose to be finally living his dream, but I just felt like something was missing. Did you guys feel this way?
Sorry if it was already talk about. __________________

Yes Dawson was missing something alright in the finale.
Joey Potter. But yes I wish Dawson was romantically filled as well. __________________

I think it would have felt forced for them to have Dawson running into Gretchen. I loved Dawson and Gretchen. But, if they had just introduced her back in it would have been weird and made the story not so much about the love triagle and Joey finally choosing.
Plus, Dawson's romantic life was never a prominent issue except for with the leading ladies and Gretchen (which was showing that he was moving on from Joey or something like that). And now I've lost my trian of thought...so I'm leaving it there. __________________

IMO he wasn't missing anything. He had his dream job and had reconciled with his 2 best friends. The only thing I felt that was missing was Jen being alive.

Since I was never really an avid Dawson fan I cant say I was 100% in tune with his character or that I really saw anything missing but I dnt really see how he couldve ended with anyone romantically and it wouldve been good. After all Joey didnt really seem intersted at all in anything but nostalgic friendship in the end and there were really no other female love interests for Dawson. I also dont feel like its necessary for a man to have found the love of his life at 25, I think it happens very rarely and it seemed to have happened for another two characters to Dawson finding his "thing" in his career seemed great and I got the feeling that he'd find love later on in life. I think a lot of people felt love was missing from Dawsons life simply because thats what they wanted for him, unfortunately, thats not what the writer felt was important to the character.

i think it made things realistic...it would have been really bad if all characters ended up with someone and 'lived happily ever after'...the ending was pretty simple and i think dawson's happy...wherever he is...and maybe he did find that someone...we just didn't need to see it...somehow...we just know...

Well since Dawson's character was always portrayed as sort of a "hopeless romantic", and his early movies even reflected this, I will answer with a resounding YES. Not necessarily with Joey, but with someone by the finale at age 25. It just made no sense that this successful, attractive, romantic guy had no serious love-interest/relationship. Even if it was breifly "inferred" in the beginning of the finale that he was seeing someone, if it were serious he would have certainly taken her to his mother's wedding(ESPECIALLY considering Dawson thought Joey was not going to be there).

Yes Dawson was missing something. Dawson's romantic relationships was one of the things I enjoyed about this character and something I could relate to and I think it's sad it was not part of the finale. Dawson was a guy who has supposedly been obsessed with happy ROMANTIC endings forever so why can’t he have one himself in the end?

I guess he is considered a hopless romantic, but he was not in a romantic relationship more than he was in one. He dated Jen for a few episodes in season one, he dated Joey for a few episodes in season two, twice, he didn't date anyone in season three, he had a pretty long relationship with Gretchen in season four, but turns out he was wishing she were someone else during most of it so not sure if that even counts, in season 5 he had another few episodes with Jen, then in season 6 the one night stand with Joey, and then the on again off again thing with Natasha. So it's not like he was a character that was mostly always half of a couple, so him ending up not being in relationship didn't seem out of place to me. If they had shown him never alone during the six years and then have him end up alone, I would say that he was missing something, but since he was mostly single during the six years, ending up single was just normal.

BUt remember in that scene it wasnt only inferred that he'd been seeing someone, that scene was about Dawson cancelling his date with her...AGAIN! And then talking about how busy his job kept him. SO obviusly it wasnt that serious and obviously he really didnt have room for romance in his life at that point. TO be honest, thats not so unrelistic for a successful 25 year old. I know people like to hold onto the "hopeless romantic" stigma of Dawson Leery but if you tkae a look at some of the later seasons I think that dropped off a bit. I recall Dawson saying early on that he'd never sleep with someone he didnt love and think about it...I dotn think Dawson LOVED anyone he actually slept with. Not Jen since that didnt last long and he admitted later on that he still loved Joey. Certainly not Natasha since that was pretty much based on sex andboth admitted later that they didnt love each other. Probably Joey at the time but funnily enough, that ended up a one night stand because of Natasha...that situation was not so romantic if you ask me. And then there was one night stand number two, Amy the film critic, who Dawson seemed to ave zero attachment too. So no, I dont get the hopeless romantic vibe from late series Dawson, I think a lot of that died with Mitch, but I did start to see the career driven Hollywood guy though. |

I agree Sugz. A lot of Dawson's preconceived notions left after Mitch died. I don't think he was ever the same after that, not that he would be after losing a parent. It made him realize that things don't always turn out the way you think they will. He began living in reality more then he ever did after that.

will I have to admit I didn't watch mush after the 2nd ep of season 5, but I did turn in for the last ep just to see how it ended for all the character. So I guess because I only watch 1-4 I still show Dawson as the hopeless romantic that he was.
I do agree alot of people don't find "the one" at 25, but then again this is a TV show. If anyone I thought I would have seen being with someone was Dawson, but thats me. __________________

I don't feel that Dawson was missing anything. Just because he was the lead character, did not necessarily mean, he has to get the girl or find True Love, especially at 25. He is still young and can be single, play the field a while, enjoy is job and life, without having to worry what would be with Joey, because that book ended and was closed and she moved on and this time, it was for good. So I think it wasn't exactly Dawson being alone, it was actually the beginning of Dawson being free. So I felt it ended right, except for Jen dying as well, cause that storyline was so non-believeable for me, but anyways....

Yeah, I did feel like Dawson was missing something in the finale, but then again, there's still plenty of time to find "the one."
