this is one of my favorite scenes from season 4. Joey stands up to Dawson when they are reading the book and tells him that Pacey is not the villain he wants him to be and Dawson is not so wonderful as he thinks he is. Dawson wants Pacey to be the bad guy, but Joey doesn't see things as black and white as Dawson. It even goes back to the season 2 finale when Joey says she sees gray

Joey: I didn't think it was very realistic. I mean, Valentine is this cardboard cut out hero and Protius is unfairly painted as a villain. I just think these scenerios are actually a lot more complicated. (Dawson, who sits one seat over from Joey's, 'chortles'.)

Teacher: Mr. Leery, do I sense an opposing viewpoint in your little chortle?

Dawson: No. No, it was nothing.

Teacher: Please, please, elaborate.

Dawson: Well, umm, I don't think it's a story about a girl coming between two guys. I think it's about the friendship between the two guys.

Joey: Which fails when the girl comes between them.

Dawson: It fails because one friend betrays the other. I mean, Protius is a lousy friend.

Joey: Valentine isn't such a great guy. I mean, he's so fixated on his honor that he totally loses sight of everything else around him.

Dawson: He was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice; he gave up the girl he loved. You think that's a bad thing?

Joey: I think nothing about this topic is black and white, Dawson.

I have to say how frustrating it is to hear Dawson say that it was about the friendship between the two guys, when in S3 he gave up on his friendship with Pacey as soon as he thought he might lose Joey. Like Joey said, he was fixated (this is what his obsession with Joey does to him) and it caused him to lose sight of everything else (his friendship with Pacey).

Totally agree about Dawson in 403. As if what he did was noble. "Your free, you can do whatever you want." He wasn't being noble, he was just letting her out of his prison clutches. Totally agree with Joey. That's the part i was talking about, her sticking up for Pacey and their relationship.
