"The Anti-Prom" ~ 3x22

Synopsis: Dawson, Joey and Andie organise their own unique prom when they learn that Jack has been the victim of homophobic discrimination over his choice of prom date. Dawson asks Joey to be his date to the group's anti-prom, but misleads Joey into believing that the night is about their renewed friendship, hiding the fact that he wants to win her back. Pacey attends the prom with Andie on his arm, who has plans to make things happen between the two of them. Dawson and Andie are both upset when they see the chemistry between Joey and Pacey who share an intimate moment on the dance floor. Joey goes to visit Dawson the next day, and tells him she isn't ready to make decisions. Jen breaks up with Henry after he selfishly makes plans for an entire summer at football camp without considering her feelings. Gail responds to Mitch's doubts about her commitment to their relationship by proposing to him. He accepts, witnessed by Dawson and Joey from the doorway.

We would like to invite everyone to participate in our re-watch, be it first-time
viewer or long-time fan. This is our opportunity to relive the Dawson's Creek days and to
discuss our favorite moments, things we would like to change or maybe totally new
things we never noticed before. We will watch one episode every two weeks. Due to our different time-zones we decided to not name an exact
time and date, so everyone can decide for themselves when they watch the episode.
We will update this thread every second Friday, when we start a new episode, so all discussion
can take place in here too. Have Fun! :group_hug:

In my opinion this was a terrible episode.

Pacey did not shine......He took Andie to the prom under false pretense,, knowing that she still had feelings for him, and the first chance he had he dances with Joey.

I remember Andie standing there broken hearted with tears watching Pacey dancing with Joey. Then to top it off she forgave him.

To top it off when Dawson got upset, Joey ran after him which more or less foreshadowed season four; where all they did was fight over Dawson.

Personally I don't think it was "false pretenses". If anything he lied about his inviting Andie not being a "pity-ask", but he never claimed to want to take her for any other reason than "having the honor" of doing so. He never said "I want to go to the dance with you so we can rekindle our relationship." If Andie thought so, he didn't say anything to lead her to believe it. I know it sucked for her to see Pacey and Joey dancing together but, as Joey told Dawson, if they were there as friends, it shouldn't matter who Pacey dances with.

On the other hand, Dawson admitted to coming up with idea of the Alternative Prom not for Jack's sake, like he pretended to, but to rekindle his relationship with Joey. He also told Joey that the only reason he wanted to go to the prom with her was to honor the promise they made as two old friends. So if anyone was going throwing around false pretenses, it was Dawson.

I do agree with you about Joey considering Dawson's feelings and their friendship over Pacey's feelings and their relationship as foreshadowing Season 4. That was one thing I truly hated about Season 4. I get it though; at the time Joey and Dawson's co-dependency was so unhealthy. I'm glad Joey went to college and found the spine she lost during the summer between Season 2 and 3.

All of that aside, I loved this episode. Pacey and Joey's longing for each other was so heartbreaking to see. Then they were finally able to dance and we could see how much their relationship progressed since Four to Tango. They both finally looked alive and happy for the first time since making out in The Longest Day, and they were so comfortable in each other's arms... :sigh:

This episode is awesome for Pacey & Joey fans but as a Dawson & Joey fan I guess the only scene I really like is this one..........

Joey: Hey.

Dawson: Hey.

Joey: Um... I brought these back for you. They're so beautiful, I-- I'm not quite sure they're me, but... Really fun time wearing them. So, I'm not going to deny that when you kissed me last night... I felt something. Something that I wasn't expecting, and something that... Probably will always be there. I can't keep hurting people, Dawson, and I can't choose, so I'm telling you the same thing that I told Pacey. Please don't make me. I'm not ready, and I can't do it.

Dawson: Ok.

Joey: Ok?

Dawson: I'll wait. You can call me an eternal optimist, but I have faith. This whole year, I've been on this... Soul-searching journey... And I feel like I've finally come to the end. And what I found... Was you.
It basically proves that Joey always has romantic feelings for Dawson

Yes, yes, and more yes. I couldn't stand this episode. It reminded me once again that you don't do this to someone you care for. Supposed true love shouldn't be created by hurting others. What both Pacey and Joey did to Dawson is a shame and just wrong. Andie was heartbroken over all of this. Pacey manipulated two times... once with the prom and two actually having the audacity to go to Dawson's aunts knowing he wanted to be closer to Joey. Talk about doing it right under Dawson's nose. It's just wrong on every level.

Love shouldn't be about having to severely hurt others in order to be with someone. I could never imagine dating someone I knew my best friend loved dearly. I would feel so guilty. I would never go there.

I honestly disliked everything about this episode.

Exactly. There was not a moment throughout seasons 3 and 4 that indicated she was over Dawson. The entire PJ relationship was tarnished because Joey couldn't get over Dawson and Pacey knew it.

Which is why by the time Promicide rolled around he was fed up with Joey and he decisively broke it off.

Pacey knew Andie still had feelings for him. I have no problem with Pacey taking Andie to the prom, but where the problem was is that as soon as Andie turned her back he was dancing with Joey and making goo goo eyes at her. What the Pacey of old would have done and what he should have done was when Joey asked him to dance; Pacey should have replied. I'm here with Andie and he should have asked Andie if it was ok to dance with joey.

Every time I heard her say why can't we just go back and be like we used to, I wanted to throw a beer bottle through the screen. She is supposed to be intelligent, But here she is, and I'm sure she knew Dawson had major problems with Pacey at the time and as soon as Dawson turns his back she runs to Pacey for a dance. Is she so stupid as to think Dawson was not going to react?

So instead of seeing this so called beautiful scene I see two deceitful people who really don't care about anyone but themselves.......And true to form Joey goes running after Dawson leaving Pacey standing there. Which is what she basically did all of season four. Joey was also guilty of lying to herself. She was still clearly in love with Dawson while playing games with Pacey.

Pacey apologized to Andie after the dance. The reason he apologized was the only reason he wanted to go to the dance was to be around Joey.

I feel sorry for Pacey because his True Love was actually the girl he was apologizing to.

To which Andie would have replied, "Sure go ahead," because unlike Dawson she isn't a manipulator, and because she cares about Pacey she wanted him to be happy no matter what. I also don't think it was "as soon as Andie turned her back", it was "as soon as Joey asked him." I like Andie, but the fact of the matter is she cheated on Pacey. I know I certainly would never not live my life because I'm too afraid to hurt the feelings of my ex who cheated on me. Screw that.

Which goes back to my comment about Dawson being the one throwing around false pretenses. Yet it's all Joey's fault because Joey should have known that when he insisted they go as friends to the prom he suggested throwing in response to Jack being discriminated against, he really meant, "let's go to the prom I decided to throw for the sole purpose of rekindling a romantic relationship you clearly don't want"? Right.

So instead of seeing this so called beautiful scene I see two deceitful people who really don't care about anyone but themselves...
And my opinion basically comes down to this: At a certain point, Joey had to ask herself a question - Will I allow myself to be selfish in order to be happy with the love of my life, or will I be miserable in order to satisfy the selfish needs of my so-called best friend? I recently realized that life is too short to continue sacrificing myself, my needs, or my happiness in order to make happy those who are too selfish to deserve or reciprocate my sacrifices. But, yet again, Joey chose to sacrifice her happiness until Dawson himself admitted he was being selfish and "released" her from her misery.

Look, I'm not trying to argue or change your mind. I know that's impossible. And no matter how many times we go back and forth and talk about Joey's "true" feelings and the "real" reason why Kevin wrote the finale the way he did, we have to take the story for what it is. I got the ending I wanted, so Anti-P/J sentiment really doesn't bother me. I just don't like such blatant unfairness. Even with the understanding that people tend to give a pass to those they like, and vilify those they don't, this is just ridiculous. If Pacey is wrong for asking Andie to the prom, and Joey is wrong for not taking Dawson at his word, Dawson is absolutely wrong for lying to Joey and despicable for pretending that he was only throwing the prom for Jack's sake. At least he himself admitted he might have been wrong, even if he didn't take responsibility for the repercussions. And I can't stand when men blame women for their wrongdoings. I love Pacey, but the only time he acted like a jerk at a prom was during Promicide. I understand why he was upset, but he didn't have to embarrass her. But I guess I'll save my comments about it for when we get up to that episode.
