[3x20] "The Longest Day" July 12th - July 18th

The Official Dawson's Creek Board Rewatch Thread

"The Longest Day" ~ 3x20

Synopsis: In a story reminiscent of the film Go, the day Pacey and Joey's relationship goes public is played out four times, each time revealing a little more of what happened. Capeside's newest couple struggle to tell Dawson about their relationship, but end up not needing to say anything after Jen unknowingly lets the cat out of the bag. Dawson is not the only one hurt by the relationship, as Andie also gets upset and sours her first date with Will. Dawson gives Joey an ultimatum; if she continues her relationship with Pacey, she will be subsequently ending their friendship. Joey is brokenhearted at losing either Dawson or Pacey, but reluctantly ends things with Pacey out of guilt.

We would like to invite everyone to participate in our re-watch, be it first-time
viewer or long-time fan. This is our opportunity to relive the Dawson's Creek days and to
discuss our favorite moments, things we would like to change or maybe totally new
things we never noticed before. We will watch one episode every two weeks. Due to our different time-zones we decided to not name an exact
time and date, so everyone can decide for themselves when they watch the episode.
We will update this thread every second Friday, when we start a new episode, so all discussion
can take place in here too. Have Fun!

There are a lot of great things about this episode. One of them being the closeness of Joey and Jen. It is when you really get a feel for their friendship.

I really liked Will in this episode too, but I have to apologize that I got frustrated with Dawson's tantrum.

I felt so sorry for Dawson and Andie. Pacey and Joey were sneaking around and weren't honest the second they got together. That was wrong, in my opinion. But then again, I still can't get over how this all happened in the first place. I would never, ever, fall for the love of my best friend's life. It is just not right and that's how I feel.

This episode is a prime example how much TPTB loved the triangle and milked it for all it was worth.

I really like when a story is told from different points of view, with the audience learning a little more each time. I forgot the name of this type of storytelling but the writers did a good job with it. It was a great build-up to the final Dawson Finds Out! scene everyone anticipates.

Dawson's tantrum was annoying but it was so typical. Then again, ever since Season One (after watching him and the way he spoke to, and dealt with, his parents and Jen, and even Pacey and Joey at times), whenever he gets angry I tend to dismiss him as stomping around like a spoiled child. Anyway there is so much history here that, in this case, I don't think it's wrong Pacey and Joey followed their hearts. One of several reasons is I don't think Dawson was Pacey's true friend. Multiple instances of Dawson insulting Pacey aside, in Season 2 Dawson even said flat out, "You need to go back to doing what you do best, which is to make me feel better about my life because yours is supposed to be worse." Some friend. Way to inspire selfless loyalty. But that's my opinion.

I felt bad, somewhat, for Andie, but she cheated on Pacey and she'd only been acquainted with Joey for a year. Joey was Pacey's friend for at least eight, so they actually owed her no explanations. I know it came as a blow for her to find out the way she did, but she was on a date with Pacey's old friend at the time, so I don't think there was too much she could say about it. Which is probably why when she confronted Pacey she seemed more sorry for him than for herself. That scene with Joey and Andie in the library (with Miss Fortune by Eagle Eye Cherry playing, I like that song!) was pretty good; the look on Joey's face when Andie mentioned Pacey was priceless. I liked Jen's scenes in this episode as well. Poor, underrated Jen. She was consistently a good friend to all of the characters.

I mentioned this on another thread, but I also loved that they played Dido's Thank You throughout this episode during the original run. I love that song and I loved this episode. It's definitely one of my favorites.

I don't think it's wrong that Pacey & Joey fell in love but I do think it's wrong they sneaked around. I can't condone that. Both knew Dawson wasn't going to react well and they still carried on. For me, that was unfair. And for me, it's why I don't blame Dawson for reacting the way he did. I don't like how he reacted but it's understandable for me.

I honestly think Dawson would have taken it better if Pacey and Joey had actually told him beforehand instead of finding it out from Jen. Now I think he'd still be pretty hurt and shocked but I also think he'd react better in the later episodes.

I do agree with you about Pacey and Joey telling him sooner. However, I still think he would have reacted badly, but like you said it probably would have made a difference later on.
