[3x05] "Indian Summer" January 18th - January 24th

The Official Dawson's Creek Board Rewatch Thread

"Indian Summer" ~ 3x05

Synopsis: Dawson gets increasingly annoyed when Eve won't give him any details about her mysterious life. He and Pacey set out to find out more, but Dawson is knocked sideways when he discovers the shocking connection that Eve has to Jen. Joey's misgivings about her slimy boss, Rob, lead her to gatecrashing his date with Andie, but her goodwill backfires when Rob later fires her. Jack deceives Jen in his effort to set her up on a date with Henry, one of his team-mates.

We would like to invite everyone to participate in our re-watch, be it first-time
viewer or long-time fan. This is our opportunity to relive the Dawson's Creek days and to
discuss our favorite moments, things we would like to change or maybe totally new
things we never noticed before. We will watch one episode every two weeks. Due to our different time-zones we decided to not name an exact
time and date, so everyone can decide for themselves when they watch the episode.
We will update this thread every second Friday, when we start a new episode, so all discussion
can take place in here too. Have Fun!

Here is what I wrote about this episode at the time that it aired:

This show seemed to continue the pattern of setting situations up for future episodes, and it seemed fairly rife with foreshadowing. The “Film Noire” theme of the entire show was an interesting, if rather machinated, concept, as our hero Dawson Leery “investigates” his femme fatale setting him up for a “fall of epic proportions,” the mysterious, and always over the top, Eve. I liked Pacey’s comical but accurate explanation as to why Dawson, as a “true son of Spielberg,” couldn’t relate to the dark themes so inherent in the “Film Noire” genre, and that most men are not driven by the nobler aspirations that Dawson has in his views towards love and sex.

I really like the friendship between Jack and Jen. I feel that it’s very touching, genuine, and unforced. I really like the way that both these characters have grown through their friendship, and I also liked the fact that they were able to communicate with each other openly, honestly, and with a great deal of genuine affection and concern for one another. Their friendship is a refreshing development on the show, and much more convincing than the angst filled and often combative friendship of Dawson and Joey.

I think that Rob is a truly despicable creep, and that Andie is heading for a big fall. I really disliked Andie’s dismissive attitude towards Joey when she tried to warn her about Rob. Once again, Andie seems determine to push away anyone that cares about her, and Joey’s prediction that Rob’s libido will land him in deep trouble some day seems to portend some type of sexual assault involving Andie in the future.

It was good to see Deputy Doug back, and Pacey’s needling him about being gay was hilarious! I loved it! The expression on Dawson’s face as Pacey taunted Doug was just as funny as what Pacey was saying! Pacey had a good point that there are some women in a person’s life that will function as “day players,” making a brief entrance, but forever remaining an impenetrable mystery.

I think that Henry’s infatuation with Jen is rather touching, and quite realistic! I can remember being tongue tied in the presence of some girl I adored at that age! I thought the set up meeting between Henry and Jen was amusing, but she had every right to be angry that Jack contrived to set them up without consulting her first, but his heart was in the right place, and it was good to see Jen and Jack talk things out after this incident without the rancor that marked so many of Dawson and Joey’s “discussions.”

I thought that Dawson’s confrontation with Eve reflected that he is finally over his fascination with her, but her obvious ploy to gain his sympathy through her supposed search for her real mother continued her pattern of telling half truths and outright lies, and it represented yet another “act” on the part of this ridiculously contrived character. I got a kick out her reference to “Sweet Valley High” though! Obviously, we are all now at a loss as to what is true and what is false in the story she related to Dawson, particularly when Dawson saw the picture of Jen’s mother at the end of the show.

Overall, I found the show to be a letdown from last week’s show, but it seemed to serve its intended purpose of foreshadowing future events for our favorite residents of Capeside MA.

Nice.

Loved your episode review, Jerry! Did you used to review all the episodes as they aired and post them on way back when?

Rob is gross. I cant stand this dude and I don't really see the point of his character. Andie deserves better than him for sure. When she didn't take Joey's wanting that was annoying, but Joey needs to butt out and let Andie see for herself what kind of guy he is.

I think Jen was a little too harsh on Henry. And then later on Jack. Sure, she had a right to be annoyed that she was set up but she didnt need to get so mad at him.

Oh joy Eve is back. No thanks. She's a dreadful character and so useless. Her and Dawson do not connect at ALL and on top of that, they haven't progressed at all since her first episode. Why is she even interested in him?

This episode needed more Pacey in general, his SL's have been pretty non existent this season.

Wow this first half of the season is really weak so far. It feels like they really had no idea what to do in these episodes.

I think the only point to Rob was to show Joey moving onto a new part of her life and to show how strong she has become and handling a douche like Rob was part of that.

I thought Joey went a little too far by showing up at the movie theatre, the warning should have been enough.

Not a fan of Eve either, so those scenes were not great. I'm just glad they were Dawson scenes and not Pacey scenes because then I can just fast forward through them when I do my re-watches.

Of course whenever I see the title "Indian Summer" it really only makes me think of Pacey and this moment
