It says he didn't like promoting in general - not just for The Guardian. Although with the demise of that show he may have realized why promotion is necessary and therefore put aside his dislike of the process when it came time to promote The Mentalist.

I think the biggest factor is that the show makes people look at things they don't usually like to look at - how the legal system is skewed against minorities and the poor; just how bad it can be to be poor and without resources; how quickly people can go from scraping by to out on the street; how children in the system can often be abused by the system that is supposed to protect them. Oddly the one thing it didn't seem to treat with much honesty was Nick's addiction. It was entirely too easy for him to maintain his sobriety.
