I just watched those scenes last night. And it really has nothing to do with their feelings but more about their situations being reversed from when they were together. It makes perfect sense that it was Jess that got through to her.
I was thinking about that porch thing too. The first episode Jess sees Rory the scene starts with Lorelai answering the door to Luke and Jess on the porch and Jess is entering the house. The final scene of him seeing Rory is Jess leaving the house with Jess and Luke on the porch.
