Yeah I thought it looked like season 2 as well, yet they became an official couple mid season 3. I think they were together a lot longer than they let on.
You know when you think about it Jess has a much stronger connection to Stars Hollow than Lorelai and Rory. His entire family grew up there, his uncle still lives and works there, as do his mother and sister. He has more ties than Rory.
