One of the best romantic films / book adaptations imo is
One Day
That line from Emma: "I love you, Dexter. I just don't like you anymore"
I prefer those type of movies (like 500 Days of Summer) which don't portray romance as something perfect and all hearts & flowers.
Emma and Dexter's friendship endures years of trials and tribulations, and it does con you into thinking that they might never get together... Then when they do,
And that's the type of movie that succeeds. The realism of things not always working out, but knowing that key things happened along the way which changed (Dexter) as a person.
