One of the hosts of a podcast I listen to just postulated a theory that would end up letting Star Wars "have its cake and eat it too" in regards to Rey and the Sequel Trilogy being part of the "Skywalker Saga" by tying her to Shmi and the origin of the Skywalker family name since, as was pointed out by this podcast host, Shmi didn't actually come from Tatooine and we don't know anything about her prior to when we met her in The Phantom Menace.
