Yes lawyer and attorney are the same.
And the guy prosecuting..
I would call him a Prosecutor, prosecuting attorney or a deputy district attorney. I think those would be the appropriate titles.
I think a person studies law and then is a lawyer and then you can choose what type of law you practice. You might defend people, prosecute people or choose a totally different type of law like civil.
